Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic electron scattering from atomic helium is examined within the framework of perturbed HartreeFock theory for the energy region from 0 to 50 eV. Interaction potentials are derived to describe the distortion induced into the target atom by the incident electron in the adiabatic approximation. Dynamical corrections to the adiabatic approximation are also examined and these incorporated into the formalism through a 'velocitydependent' potential. The s-, p-, and d-wave scattering phase shifts were computed by numerical iteration of the resulting equations. These phase shifts are then used to compute the elastic scattering cross sections and the results compared with other recent theoretical predictions and experimental data. (Author).

Book excerpt: The potential between an electron and a static atom is fomulated on the basis of creening-constant-type wave functions, as are characteristic of the Slater orbital atom. Universal functions are constructed so as to characterize any atom with atomic number Z from 1 to 86. The low energy elastic scattering properties of atoms are investigated on the basis of such a potential, AND THE CROSS SECTIONS ARE CALCULATED FOR ALL OF THE ATOMS FROM Z = 1 to 86. The results are compared with those which the writer obtained with the Thomas-Fermi model of the atom. Results are given for the cross sections as a function of energy, in some specific cases. Qualitative agreement between theory and experiment results from such calculations. A polarization potential must be added to static atom potentials in order to obtain quantitative agreement between theory and experiment. (Author).

Book excerpt: Electron EM reviews the theoretical and experimental work of the last 30 years on continuous electron emission in energetic ion-atom collisions. High incident energies for which the projectile is faster than the mean orbital velocity of the active electron are considered. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of ionization mechanisms. They are interpreted in terms of Coulomb centers associated with the projectile and target nuclear fields which strongly interact with the outgoing electron. General properties of the two-center electron emission are analyzed. Particular attention is given to screening effects. A brief overview of multiple ionization processes is also presented. The survey concludes with a complete compilation of experimental studies of ionization cross sections.

Polarization of the atom is included by using a term in the potential function which has the correct asymptotic behavior and which vanishes at the origin. Previous theoretical and experimental results are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a unity to physics; it is a discipline which provides the most fundamental understanding of the dynamics of matter and energy. To understand anything about a physical system you have to interact with it and one of the best ways to learn something is to use electrons as probes. This book is the result of a meeting, which took place in Magdalene College Cambridge in December 2001. Atomic, nuclear, cluster, soHd state, chemical and even bio- physicists got together to consider scattering electrons to explore matter in all its forms. Theory and experiment were represented in about equal measure. It was meeting marked by the most lively of discussions and the free exchange of ideas. We all learnt a lot. The Editors are grateful to EPSRC through its Collaborative Computational Project program (CCP2), lOPP, the Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical and Plasma Physics (DAMOPP) and the Atomic Molecular Interactions group (AMIG) of the Institute of Physics for financial support. The smooth running of the meeting was enormously facilitated by the efficiency and helpfulness of the staff of Magdalene College, for which we are extremely grateful. This meeting marked the end for one of us (CTW) of a ten-year period as a fellow of the College and he would like to take this opportunity to thank the fellows and staff for the privilege of working with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple model is proposed for the calculation of free-electron wave functions for low-energy electrons incident upon neutral atoms. The region of interaction of the electron with the atom may be separated into three regions, according to the importance of potential: Coulomb plus exchange; Coulomb; and far-field induced polarization. The division of regions is based on mathematical and physical reasons for the characteristic behavior of wave functions in the scattering problem. Examples are given for the elastic scattering of electrons from nitrogen, oxygen and argon. The agreement with experiment and effective-range theory is good. The application of the method to prediction of low-energy electron scattering from homonuclear diatomic molecules is discussed. (Author).

This subject is clearly of interest in its own right as a branch of quantum mechanical scattering theory. However, it also serves as an introduction to many of the basic theoretical concepts which are used in inelastic electron scattering and ionization. Consequently this mono graph can be viewed as an introduction to texts where these subjects are treated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Scattering from Complex Nuclei, Part A covers the historical phases of experimental development in elastic and inelastic electron scattering. This five-chapter text presents the logical development of the underlying theory of electron scattering. After briefly discussing the history of electron scattering from nuclei, this book goes on describing the theory of elastic scattering from a point nucleus, both with Born approximation and the accurate solution of the Dirac equation, as well as the corresponding experiments. The following chapter considers the analysis of nuclear charge distributions experiments using Born cross section and phase-shift methods. A chapter is devoted to the complete elastic and inelastic Born theory. This chapter also deals with the derivation of a theorem on the general form of the electron-nucleus scattering cross section, with an emphasis on the influence of the neglected transverse interaction on the cross section. The last chapter presents the status of elastic scattering along with some topics in muonic atoms that also determine nuclear charge densities. This book will be of great benefit to physicists, researchers, and graduate students who are interested in nuclear structure problems.
