Book excerpt: A theoretical model for predicting elastic-plastic, plane strain stress distributions in notched bars under bend loading has been developed by combining the elastic solutions of Neuber with the slip-line field solutions of Hill. The model is used to calculate the plastic zone size as a function of the externally applied load (moment), the yield stress Y, and geometrical parameters such as root radius, notch depth, and ligament depth. The theoretical predictions are found to be in very good agreement with experimentally measured values of the plastic zone size in notched bars of high nitrogen steel. The fracture strength of notched bars of the same material was measured at cryogenic temperatures and the value of K sub IC was determined. It is shown that the values are consistent with a fracture criterion based on the attainment of a critical tensile stress f over a small volume in front of the notch. Unstable fracture occurs when the plastic zones have spread to a critical distance such that the maximum tensile stress level in the plastic zone is raised from Y up to f. The model therefore related the notch strength of bars containing various notches to the material's intrinsic fracture characteristics. (Author).

Book excerpt: Accurate stress and strain calculations at a notch usually require a non-linear finite element analysis when local yielding has occurred. The strain energy density hypothesis is a method to predict these stress and strain values. This method proposes that the plastic strain energy density is equivalent to the strain energy density found assuming the material to be entirely elastic. This hypothesis was evaluated using the finite element method, which was tested by comparing to exact solutions of elastic and elasto-plastic problems, to calculate the stress and strain field for two notched plates of varying widths under elasto-plastic loading. For both geometries, a plane stress and plane strain analysis was performed. The elasto-plastic strain energy density from the finite element method was found to be greater than that predicted by this proposal, which in turn resulted in under-predicting the local stresses and strains. This difference was greater for the plane stress condition than for the plane strain condition. Comparisons were also made with notch stresses based the Neuber method. The two methods appear to give an upper and lower bound to the actual stresses and strains. By combining the results of the strain energy density method and the Neuber method, reasonably accurate estimates of stress and strain values can be obtained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoelasticity as an experimental method for analyzing stress fields in mechanics was developed in the early thirties by the pioneering works of Mesnager in France and Coker and Filon in England. Almost concurrently, Föppl, Mesmer, and Oppel in Germany contributed significantly to what turned out to be an amazing development. Indeed, in the fifties and sixties a tremendous number of scientific papers and monographs appeared, all over the world, dealing with various aspects of the method and its applications in experimental stress analysis. All of these contributions were based on the so-called Neumann-Maxwell stress-opticallaw; they were developed by means of the classical methods of vector analysis and analytic geometry, using the conventionallight-vector concept. This way of treating problems of mechanics by photoelasticity indicated many shortcomings and drawbacks of this classical method, especially when three-dimensional problems of elasticity had to be treated and when complicated load and geometry situations existed. Meanwhile, the idea of using the Poincare sphere for representing any polarization profile in photoelastic applications was introduced by Robert in France and Aben in the USSR, in order to deal with problems of polarization oflight passing through aseries of optical elements (retarders andjor rotators). Although the Poincare-sphere presentation of any polarization profile con stitutes a powerful and elegant method, it exhibits the difficulty of requiring manipulations in three-dimensional space, on the surface of the unit sphere. However, other graphical methods have been developed to bypass this difficulty.

Book excerpt: Relations between the strain energy density distribution and the elastic-plastic strain-stress fields near notches have been analyzed. It was found that the strain energy density distribution in the plastic zone ahead of the crack or notch tip can be satisfactorily estimated on the basis of the theoretical elastic stress field. The strain energy density can be translated into the elastic-plastic strain and stress in the plastic zone if the nonlinear material stress-strain curve is known. Good agreement with finite element calculations has been achieved for cracks under plane strain conditions. It has also been shown that the equivalent strain energy approach can be useful for the notch-tip elastic-plastic strain calculation under both monotonic and cyclic loading.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes the main methods of experimental stress analysis and examines their application to various states of stress of major technical interest, highlighting aspects not always covered in the classic literature. It is explained how experimental stress analysis assists in the verification and completion of analytical and numerical models, the development of phenomenological theories, the measurement and control of system parameters under operating conditions, and identification of causes of failure or malfunction. Cases addressed include measurement of the state of stress in models, measurement of actual loads on structures, verification of stress states in circumstances of complex numerical modeling, assessment of stress-related material damage, and reliability analysis of artifacts (e.g. prostheses) that interact with biological systems. The book will serve graduate students and professionals as a valuable tool for finding solutions when analytical solutions do not exist.

Book excerpt: The development of the plastic strain in a V-grooved flat plate under longitudinal shear was followed from the elastic through the partially plastic to the fully plastic condition for a non-strainhardening material. The region of plastic flow develops monotonically. Adjacent to the zone of deformation in the fully plastic case there is a region where limited plastic deformation has occurred. The results for the growth of the plastic zone were compared with predictions based on the elastic-plastic solution for an infinite plate and the elastic solution for a finite plate. Agreement is good at low stress levels. At high stress levels, a relatively simple empirical equation, satisfying over-all equilibrium, is proposed. Predictions based on elasticity theory alone are shown to be seriously in error.
