Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystals and polycrystals, composites and polymers, grids and multibar systems can be considered as examples of media with microstructure. A characteristic feature of all such models is the existence of scale parameters which are connected with micro geometry or long-range interacting forces. As a result the corresponding theory must essentially be a nonlocal one. The book is devoted to a systematic investigation of effects of microstructure, inner degrees of freedom and nonlocality in elastic media. The propagation of linear and nonlinear waves in dispersive media, static problems, and the theory of defects are considered in detail. Much attention is paid to approximate models and limiting tran sitions to classical elasticity. The book can be considered as a revised and updated edition of the author's book under the same title published in Russian in 1975. The frrst volume presents a self-con tained theory of one-dimensional models. The theory of three-dimensional models will be considered in a forthcoming volume. The author would like to thank H. Lotsch and H. Zorsky who read the manuscript and offered many suggestions.

Book excerpt: This monograph describes various methods for solving deformation problems of particulate solids, taking the reader from analytical to computational methods. The book is the first to present the topic of linear elasticity in mathematical terms that will be familiar to anyone with a groundingin fluid mechanics. It incorporates the latest advances in computational algorithms for elliptic partial differential equations, and provides the groundwork for simulations on high performance parallel computers. Numerous exercises complement the theoretical discussions, and a related set ofself-documented programs is available to readers with Internet access. The work will be of interest to advanced students and practicing researchers in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, applied physics, computational methods, and developers of numerical modeling software.

Book excerpt: Overview of diffraction methods applied to the analysis of the microstructure of materials. Since crystallite size and the presence of lattice defects have a decisive influence on the properties of many engineering materials, information about this microstructure is of vital importance in developing and assessing materials for practical applications. The most powerful and usually non-destructive evaluation techniques available are X-ray and neutron diffraction. The book details, among other things, diffraction-line broadening methods for determining crystallite size and atomic-scale strain due, e.g. to dislocations, and methods for the analysis of residual (macroscale) stress. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of solid-state physics and supplies readers sufficient information to apply the methods themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from a course on Micromechanics that I started about fifteen years ago at Northwestern University. At that time, micromechanics was a rather unfamiliar subject. Although I repeated the course every year, I was never convinced that my notes have quite developed into a final manuscript because new topics emerged constantly requiring revisions, and additions. I finally came to realize that if this is continued, then I will never complete the book to my total satisfaction. Meanwhile, T. Mori and I had coauthored a book in Japanese, entitled Micromechanics, published by Baifu-kan, Tokyo, in 1975. It received an extremely favorable response from students and re searchers in Japan. This encouraged me to go ahead and publish my course notes in their latest version, as this book, which contains further development of the subject and is more comprehensive than the one published in Japanese. Micromechanics encompasses mechanics related to microstructures of materials. The method employed is a continuum theory of elasticity yet its applications cover a broad area relating to the mechanical behavior of materi als: plasticity, fracture and fatigue, constitutive equations, composite materi als, polycrystals, etc. These subjects are treated in this book by means of a powerful and unified method which is called the 'eigenstrain method. ' In particular, problems relating to inclusions and dislocations are most effectively analyzed by this method, and therefore, special emphasis is placed on these topics.

Book excerpt: The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and Überall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner-Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details.A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects.

Book excerpt: Micromechanics of Composites: Multipole Expansion Approach, Second Edition outlines substantial recent progress in the development of the multipole expansion method and focuses on its application to actual micromechanical problems. The book covers micromechanics topics such as conductivity and elasticity of particulate and fibrous composites, including those with imperfect and partially debonded interfaces, nanocomposites, cracked solids, and more. Complete analytical solutions and accurate numerical data are presented in a unified manner for the multiple inhomogeneity models of finite, semi-, and infinite heterogeneous solids. This new edition has been updated to include the theories and techniques of the multipole expansion method. Two entirely new chapters covering the conductivity and elasticity of composites with ellipsoidal inhomogeneities and anisotropic constituents have been added. A special emphasis is made on the heterogeneous solids with imperfect interfaces, including the nanoporous and nanocomposite materials. - Gives a systematic account on the multipole expansion method, including its theoretical foundations, analytical and numerical techniques, and a new, dipole moment-based approach to the homogenization problem - Contains detailed analytical and numerical analyses of a variety of micromechanical multiple inhomogeneity models, providing clear insight into the physical nature of the problems under study - Provides a reliable theoretical framework for developing the full-field based micromechanical theories of a composite's strength, brittle/fatigue damage development, and other properties
