Book excerpt: Les composites de type Cf/C sont utilisés en tant que pièces structurales dans les propulseurs spatiaux du fait de leurs excellentes propriétés mécaniques dans le domaine des très hautes températures. Néanmoins, l'atmosphère oxydante et corrosive créée lors du décollage des lanceurs et les hauts flux gazeux dégradent ces matériaux. Afin d'améliorer les performances de ces matériaux vis-à-vis de l'oxydation/corrosion, une protection composée de céramiques ultra-réfractaires (dites UHTC) peut être appliquée. Pour une efficacité de protection optimale, des phases UHTC ont été introduites en tant que constituants de la matrice. Dans ces travaux de thèse, la matrice a été réalisée par l'intermédiaire d'un procédé d'élaboration en phase liquide combinant : (i) l'introduction de poudres et (ii) la densification par infiltration réactive d'un métal fondu. La composition de la matrice appartient au système (B;C;Si;Zr). La caractérisation des matériaux après élaboration a permis de comprendre les mécanismes d'infiltration et les réactions permettant de mieux contrôler la composition chimique et la répartition des phases. Des essais sous torche oxyacétylénique ont été utilisés pour se placer dans des conditions proches de l'application visée. La caractérisation post-test des matériaux a permis d'évaluer l'efficacité de la protection dans le cas d'une utilisation unique et également d'une possible réutilisation. Les résultats en oxydation/corrosion ont permis de classer les matériaux en fonction de leur efficacité de protection.

Book excerpt: Le travail présenté dans ce mémoire concerne l’étude et la réalisation de matériaux céramiques chargés par des particules ferromagnétiques. Nous avons en particulier étudié l’évolution hyperfréquence de ces composites à hautes températures. Les charges ferromagnétiques sont sélectionnées sur la base de deux critères : d’une part leur résistance à l’oxydation à haute température et d’autre part la possibilité d’obtenir des perméabilités élevées. On étudie ces propriétés pour des poudres de différentes composition et granulométrie. La matrice permettant la réalisation des composites est à base de silicates. La structuration s’effectue par des réactions de type sol-gel à température et hygrométrie contrôlées sans traitement thermique ultérieur. Les composites sont déposés par pulvérisation au pistolet sur des substrats métalliques préalablement traités (shoopage à base d’alumine) et présentent une bonne tenue mécanique jusqu’à cent degrés. L’utilisation de lois de mélange de type Bruggeman permet de rendre compte des phénomènes observés lors des mesures hyperfréquences en température.

Book excerpt: L'ouverture du marché de l'aéronautique civil aux matériaux composites à matrice céramique impose le développement de nouveaux procédés d'élaboration compatibles avec les cadences de production et les coûts de fabrication du secteur.À cette fin, des travaux expérimentaux ont été menés pour élaborer une matrice à base d'oxynitrure de silicium (Si2N2O) par procédé SHS, ou synthèse par combustion, à partir d'un mélange de poudres réactives.L'oxynitrure de silicium est une céramique thermostructurale prometteuse, caractérisée par de bonnes propriétés mécaniques, mais également par une résistance à l'oxydation supérieure à celle du carbure de silicium.Le procédé SHS est un procédé d'élaboration rapide dont le moteur est une réaction chimique suffisamment exothermique pour s'entretenir sans apport d'énergie extérieur.Les poudres sont préalablement broyées, mises en suspension, puis imprégnées dans une préforme fibreuse composée de fibres en carbure de silicium de dernière génération (Hi-Nicalon S). La réaction SHS est ensuite réalisée dans un réacteur spécialement conçu et dédié à cette étude.Une attention particulière a été portée sur l'optimisation des paramètres d'élaboration pour la synthèse d'une matrice à base Si2N2O. La synthèse s'effectue par la nitruration sous pression d'un mélange dans les bonnes proportions d'une poudre de silicium et d'une poudre de silice. La réaction chimique s'amorce à la température de fusion du silicium. La pression d'élaboration et la vitesse de montée en température constituent les paramètres principaux régissant la composition et la microstructure de la matrice. Ces paramètres ont fait l'objet d'une étude expérimentale approfondie pour parvenir à une matrice homogène, composée à plus de 90% d'oxynitrure de silicium et assurant un taux de porosité résiduelle du composite inférieur à 10%. Ce travail a été complété par le calcul des propriétés élastoplastiques de la matrice, par la caractérisation mécanique à l'échelle du composite, et par un test de vieillissement en température sous air humide.

Des études fondamentales (modélisation thermodynamique) couplée à des études expérimentales (mouillabilité) ont été réalisées afin de mieux comprendre les mécanismes réactifs responsables des variations de durée de vie des CMC. La thermodynamique permet de comprendre les interactions physicochimiques responsables de la volatilisation de B203(s) et de connaître les différentes phases qui peuvent être formées en fonction des conditions opératoires. L'étude des systèmes Si-B-C, B-C-O-Si, B-Si et SiO2-B2O3 montre que les phases borées se vaporisent à cause de l'hydratation rapide des composés riches en B203 qui sont formés dès 600°c. La réactivité du verre avec la matrice ou les renforts peut être étudiée de manière dynamique par mouillage réactif. Deux dispositifs expérimentaux (parois chaudes et parois froides) ont été conçus et réalisés au laboratoire. Les 400 essais réalisés ont permis de mettre en évidence la réactivé interfaciale entre la phase auto-cicatrisante et les constituants de la matrice auto-cicatrisante. Le comportement des systèmes étudiés est fonction d'un grand nombre de facteurs, parmi lesquels, la composition du verre, son procédé d'élaboration ou encore la température et l'atmosphère de travail
