Book excerpt: Research related to justice and tourism is at an early stage in tourism studies. Challenges abound due to the complex scope and scale of tourism, and thus the need to transcend disciplinary boundaries to inform a phenomenon that is intricately interwoven with place and people from local to global. The contributors to this book have drawn from diverse knowledge domains including but not limited to sociology, geography, business studies, urban planning and architecture, anthropology, philosophy and management studies, to inform their research. From case-based empirical research to descriptive and theoretical approaches to justice and tourism, they tackle critical issues such as social justice and gender, discrimination and racism, minority and worker rights, indigenous, cultural and heritage justice (including special topics like food sovereignty), while post-humanistic perspectives that call us to attend to non-human others, to climate justice and sustainable futures. A rich array of principles is woven within and between the chapters. The various contributions illustrate the need for continuing collaboration among researchers in the Global North and Global South to enable diverse voices and worldviews to inform the pluralism of justice and tourism, as arises in this book. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

Book Synopsis Tourism Fictions, Simulacra and Virtualities by : Maria Gravari-Barbas
Download or read book Tourism Fictions, Simulacra and Virtualities written by Maria Gravari-Barbas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism Fictions, Simulacra and Virtualities offers a new understanding of tourism’s interaction with space, questioning the ways in which fictions, simulacra and virtualities express tourism in the built environment and vice versa. Since its beginnings, tourism has inspired themed built environments that have a constitutive, and sometimes problematic, relationship with the “real” world and its architectural references. This volume questions and rethinks the different environments constructed or adapted both for and by tourism exploring the relationship between the “real” and the “unreal” within the tourist bubble and the ways in which the real world inspires simulacra for tourism use. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach this book touches on a wide range of geographical areas, eras and subjects such as post-socialist tourism in Poland, the Hawaiian imaginary in Las Vegas, Rio de Janeiro’s Little Africa, as well as multiple instances of virtual reality in tourism. This timely and innovative volume will be of great interest to upper level students, researchers and academics in tourism, architecture, cultural studies, geography and heritage studies.

Book Synopsis Decolonization and Anti-colonial Praxis by :
Download or read book Decolonization and Anti-colonial Praxis written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decolonization and Anti-colonial Praxis presents research on contemporary forms of decolonization and anti-colonialism in practice. It pertains to the ways in which individuals, groups, and communities engage with the logic of epistemic colonial power within areas of citizenship, migration, education, Indigeneity, language, land struggle, and social work. The contributions in this edited volume empirically document the conceptual and bodily engagement of racialized and violated individuals and communities as they use anti-colonial principles to disrupt criminalizing institutional discourses and policies within various global imperial contexts. The terms ‘Decolonization’ and ‘Anti-colonialism’ are used in diverse and interdisciplinary academic perspectives. They are researched upon and elaborated in necessary ways in the theoretical literature, however, it is rare to see these principles employed in applied forms. Decolonization and Anti-colonial Praxis provides a much needed contemporary and representative reclamation of these concepts from the standpoint of racialized communities. It explores the frameworks and methods rooted in their indigeneity, cultural history and memories to imagine a new future. The research findings and methodological tools presented in this book will be of interdisciplinary interest to teachers, graduate students and researchers. Contributors are: Harriet Akanmori, Ayah Al Oballi, Sevgi Arslan, Jacqueline Benn-John, Lucy El-Sherif, Danielle Freitas, Pablo Isla Monsalve, Dionisio Nyaga, Hoda Samater, Rose Ann Torres, Umar Umangay, and Anila Zainub.
