Not until recently the studies on the interchange net are studied from a "Central" Teotihuacan perspective marginalizing the "Peripheral" despite the presence of a number of Teotihuacan artifacts found in the western regions, that either means they originated in Teotihuacan or were locally reproduced copies of Teotihuacan artifacts. The author explores the commercial dependency and the dominant central role towards the local craft production from a world systemic perspective, suggesting that several communities along the basin of Lake Cuitzeo participated, inferred and imported material culture with references to other parts outside of the Teotihuacan world-system, allowing them a certain level of autonomy.

Book excerpt: The Early Classic period in Mesoamerica has been characterized by the appearance of Teotihuacan-related material culture throughout the region. Teotihuacan, known for its monumental architecture and dense settlement, became an urban center around 100 BC and a regional state over the next few centuries, dominating much of the Basin of Mexico and beyond until its collapse around AD 650. Teotihuacan and Early Classic Mesoamerica explores the complex nature of Teotihuacan’s interactions with other regions from both central and peripheral vantage points. The volume offers a multiscalar view of power and identity, showing that the spread of Teotihuacan-related material culture may have resulted from direct and indirect state administration, colonization, emulation by local groups, economic transactions, single-event elite interactions, and various kinds of social and political alliances. The contributors explore questions concerning who interacted with whom; what kinds of materials and ideas were exchanged; what role interregional interactions played in the creation, transformation, and contestation of power and identity within the city and among local polities; and how interactions on different scales were articulated. The answers to these questions reveal an Early Classic Mesoamerican world engaged in complex economic exchanges, multidirectional movements of goods and ideas, and a range of material patterns that require local, regional, and macroregional contextualization. Focusing on the intersecting themes of identity and power, Teotihuacan and Early Classic Mesoamerica makes a strong contribution to the understanding of the role of this important metropolis in the Early Classic history of the region. Book excerpt: Paleomagnetic field analysis occupies a separate place in the variety of studied physical parameters, since it assists us in obtaining specific stamps' of past geomagnetic field configurations. It is well-known that life on Earth and all geological-environmental processes occur in the changing geomagnetic field (the Earth's magnetic field intensity is now decreasing). Geological-geophysical records indicate that hundreds and hundreds of Earth's magnetic field reversals have occurred. Paleomagnetic research has revealed information about ancient (from hundreds to billions years ago) magnetic field changes, which reflects definite geological, archaeological, cosmological and environmental events of that time. Some geodynamic and tectonic information derived from paleomagnetic field analysis cannot be obtained by any other geophysical or geological methods. This book reveals the current understanding of leading scientists studying paleomagnetic on new approaches and results in different regions of the world. Three main issues are presented in the book: a comparison of the Earth's geomagnetic field and the Earth's biota evolution processes over the last 2.5 billion years (Chapter 1); combined paleomagnetic mapping examples of some areas of the Eastern Mediterranean (Chapter 2); various aspects of archaeomagnetic artifact examination, including advanced mathematical approach applications (Chapters 3 and 4); and utilisation of geomagnetic data from the past for historical reconstruction of China and Mesoamerica (Chapter 5). Book excerpt: In Tariacuri's Legacy: The Prehispanic Tarascan State, Helen Perlstein Pollard draws upon ethnohistoric documentation, ecological data, and archaeological research, including her own recent work in the region, to provide the first comprehensive overview of the Tarascan state, one of the two great political powers the Spanish encountered when they arrived in Mexico in the early sixteenth century. The Tarascans dominated western Mexico - in a state founded, according to legend, by the mythical Tariacuri - as fully as the Aztecs dominated the central Valley of Mexico, but until recently they have been little studied and poorly understood. There are several reasons for this neglect: Spanish chroniclers recognized but did not focus on the Tarascans, who were far from the heart of the Spanish administration in Central Mexico; nineteenth-century archaeologists were more drawn to the spectacular monumental sites of the Maya area and of Central Mexico; and, in the twentieth century, the Aztec model was the paradigm for civilization against which other Mexican states were measured. In more recent years, however, the Tarascan state has become a subject of growing interest, and in the last decades the work of Helen Perlstein Pollard in particular has revealed much about this remarkable civilization. Pollard's survey of Tzintzantzun has led her to identify specialized zones and to define the urban character of this central administrative city, as well as its economic, political, ecological, social, ideological, and cultural relationship to other parts of the Tarascan state. She emphasizes the importance of metallurgy, in particular, as a marker of elite social status and a major source of wealth for the ruling dynasty. Placing the Tarascan state in the larger context of Mesoamerica, Pollard shows one complex and brilliant variant of archaic civilizations.
