Book Synopsis Woman, power and money by : Alicia E. Kaufmann

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was interested in money since childhood. I remember we often spoke of it at home. My parents had enjoyed a comfortable position in Europe, but due to the vicissitudes of war, they were forced to seek new life courses. They landed in Argentina, where they started from scratch. My grandfather was a wealthy banker in Vienna and my grandmother, Carolina Goldschmidt (German for gold forging), came from one of the most renowned local families. Her mother had been one of the first patients of the then young and unknown Sigmund Freud. My father, an engineer, met my mother in Prague. During World War II, women held minor roles. My mother used to say, "Men do not like women who are too smart". That sentence, her tenacity and her fighting spirit were essential life lessons for me. The most frequent statement my father used to make was that young people should travel and study. I felt most identified with this recommendation and, at the age of 14, I began to earn my own money teaching English. Handling my economy was synonymous with independence and freedom. Therefore, I practised and passed it on to my children, supporting another parental slogan that read: "If you earn ten, save three". I began my research on the career development of women and men almost three decades ago. In those early studies, my topics of interest were financial intelligence and socialisation in families.
Book Synopsis Personality and Psychopathology by : Laura S. Brown
Download or read book Personality and Psychopathology written by Laura S. Brown and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1994-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the scrutiny of feminist theory, traditional theories of personality and psychopathology are shown to be inadequate primarily because the theories reflect the biased cultural norms in which they were developed. Some limitations include their constricted views of human nature, their narrowly constructed definitions of mental health and mental disorder, and their lack of accounting for the many forces that affect human development and functioning. Synthesizing over 20 years of feminist thinking, this volume presents original critiques of mainstream psychological theories and lays the groundwork for the development of a context-based, feminist psychological theory. The first and only volume to present a specifically feminist perspective on the theoretical and conceptual foundations of treatment, Personality and Psychopathology is an essential text for upper-level courses in personality, psychopathology, and the psychology of women. Providing invaluable insights, it is necessary reading for mainstream and feminist therapists of all disciplines.
Download or read book Easy Women written by Debra A. Castillo and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addresses the topic of prostitution and "easy women" in Mexican literature. The figure of the prostitute or sexually liberated woman not only permeates Mexican folk songs and popular movies but stands at the crossroads of its national literary culture. In Easy Women, Debra A. Castillo focuses on the prostitute, or the woman perceived as such, in order to ask why this character exerts such a hold on the Mexican imagination. Combining early twentieth-century novels, current best-selling pulp fiction, and testimonial narratives, Castillo explores how Mexican writers have positioned the "easy woman" in their works. In each example the transgressive woman -- marked by an active sexuality -- serves a crucial narrative function, one that both promotes and challenges myths about women on the continuum of sexual promiscuity. Ending with a discussion based on a series of in-depth interviews with sex workers in Tijuana, Castillo highlights the complexities and ambiguities of these women's professional and personal lives. Bridging Latin American literary and cultural criticism, gender studies, and studies of Mexican society, Easy Women provides a sophisticated and groundbreaking examination of the place of the sexually liberated woman in contemporary Mexican culture.
Book Synopsis Wealth and Poverty in Close Personal Relationships by : Susan Millns
Download or read book Wealth and Poverty in Close Personal Relationships written by Susan Millns and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of global and domestic economic crisis, the financial aspects of domestic and familial relationships are more important and more strained than ever before. The focus of this book is on the distribution of wealth and poverty in traditional and non-traditional familial relationships. The volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the way in which money matters are structured and governed within close personal relationships and the extent to which they have an impact on the nature and economic dynamics of relationships. As such, the key areas of investigation are the extent to which participation in the labour market, unpaid caregiving, inheritance, pensions and welfare reform have an impact on familial relationships. The authors also explore governmental and legal responses by investigating the privileging of certain types of domestic relationships, through fiscal and non-fiscal measures, and the differential provision on relationship breakdown. The impact of budget and welfare cuts is also examined for their effect on equality in domestic relationships.

Book Synopsis Sartre, Self-formation, and Masculinities by : Jean-Pierre Boulé
Download or read book Sartre, Self-formation, and Masculinities written by Jean-Pierre Boulé and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of Sartre's Centenary, this book helps to understand the man behind the work, offering a psycho-social analysis of Jean-Paul Sartre with an emphasis on his masculinity. It sets out to contextualize Sartre in terms of his psycho-sexual formation and processes of self-constitution in view of his childhood. The main period under detailed study is 1905-1945, before Sartre became the Sartre. It concentrates on his early childhood, his teenage years in La Rochelle, the years at the Ecole Normale, and the first few years of his adulthood, with specific attention on the war years. An analysis of Sartre's relationships follows, with Simone de Beauvoir and other women and men (including love and sex), before a postscript covering the period 1973-1980. This essay is not a reductive account. It tells the story of Jean-Paul Sartre, from the inside out, so that the achievements of one of the major intellectuals of the 20th Century can be measured against his own internal struggles.
Book Synopsis Mother, Madonna, Whore by : Estela V. Welldon
Download or read book Mother, Madonna, Whore written by Estela V. Welldon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Freud, female sexuality remained something of a mystery: a riddle and a dark continent. He urged his female colleagues to enlighten him. Many have since done so - and this book is a most vivid and illuminating contribution to the field. The author explores why the quality of their bodies is fundamental to women's psychology; how this may lead to self-mutilation; and how such perverse behavior may also be aimed at objects which women see as their own creations, specifically, their babies. The potential causes and consequences of these conditions, including maternal and paternal incest and its frequent aftermath, prostitution, are also discussed.
