La presente tesis doctoral tiene por objeto describir el propósito de vida en la comunidad de los Portales, en Sevilla, Andalucía, la cual, desde hace treinta años, ha promovido el crecimiento personal de sus miembros, mediante el análisis de los sueños. Este trabajo ha desarrollado un modelo de vida sostenible. El trabajo de campo consistió en una aproximación etnográfica, realizando observación participante y entrevistas individuales semiestructuradas. ¿Qué motivos acercaron a sus miembros a participar en la comunidad? ¿Cuál es el propósito de la comunidad? y ¿Qué trabajo hacen en su vida diaria para lograrlo? fueron las preguntas que guiaron la investigación. Se concluye que el propósito, a nivel individual y colectivo, puede funcionar de dos maneras: como un principio creativo y de transformación micro-social o como un dogma alienante y constrictivo.
