Written and edited by leading researchers in ATD, the book covers all aspects of ATD theory and practice, including teaching applications. The chapters feature the most relevant and recent investigations presented at the 6th international conference on the ATD, offering a unique opportunity for an international audience interested in the study of mathematics teaching and learning to keep in touch with advances in educational research. The book is divided into four sections and the contributions explore key topics such as: The core concept of ‘praxeology’, including its development and functionalities The need for new teaching praxeologies in the paradigm of questioning the world The impact of ATD on the teaching profession and the education of teachers This is the second volume in the New Perspectives on Research in Mathematics Education. This comprehensive casebook is an indispensable resource for researchers, teachers and graduate students around the world.
Book Synopsis Classroom Discourse Analysis by : Frances Christie
Download or read book Classroom Discourse Analysis written by Frances Christie and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a model of classroom discourse analysis that uses systemic functional linguistic theory and associated genre theory to develop a view of classroom episodes as 'curriculum genres', some of which operate in turn as part of larger unities of work called 'curriculum macrogenres'. Drawing on Bernstein's work, Christie argues that two registers operate in pedagogic discourse: a regulative register, to do with the goals and directions of the discourse; and an instructional register, to do with the particular 'content' or knowledge at issue. Each can be shown to be realized in distinctive clusters of choices in the grammar. The operation of the regulative register determines the initiation, pacing, sequencing and evaluation of the overall pedagogic activity. The book sets out the its methodology in detail by reference to a number of classroom texts, and a range of school subjects. Overall, schools emerge as sites of symbolic control in a culture.
Book Synopsis Reflections on Media Education Futures by : Sirkku Kotilainen
Download or read book Reflections on Media Education Futures written by Sirkku Kotilainen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference "Media Education Futures" in Tampere, Finland 2014, highlighted participation, well-being and citizenship as current Nordic perspectives in media education, and discussed media and information literacies contributing to intercultural dialogue. The goal was to display and promote research in the field along with the practices of media education. Research results presented at the conference indicated that the civic skills needed in information societies include critical awareness, which is the basis for understanding media societies. Critical thinking is also the basis for creativity and should be included in the teaching of coding, which has been done in several countries in new school curricula at the basic level. Moreover, broader cooperation among researchers with different cultural backgrounds, rather than traditional Europe-centred collaboration was echoed. This publication reflects topics including critical awareness, technological citizenry, methodologies in studying young people in urban cities, and youth well-being in relations to media and information literacies. The publication covers articles from different parts of the world including, for example, China and India in Asia and Brazil in Latin America, as well as several European countries. It is divided into two sections - 1) Academic Articles and 2) Practical Papers and Case Studies - as reflections on the futures of media education.
Book Synopsis EBOOK: Meaning Making in Secondary Science Classroomsaa by : Eduardo Mortimer
Download or read book EBOOK: Meaning Making in Secondary Science Classroomsaa written by Eduardo Mortimer and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2003-09-16 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the talk of science classrooms and in particular on the ways in which the different kinds of interactions between teachers and students contribute to meaning making and learning. Central to the text is a new analytical framework for characterising the key features of the talk of school science classrooms. This framework is based on sociocultural principles and links the work of theorists such as Vygotsky and Bakhtin to the day-to-day interactions of contemporary science classrooms. *presents a framework, based on sociocultural theory, for analysing the language of teaching and learning interactions in science classrooms *provides detailed examples and illustrations of insights gained from applying the framework to real science lessons in Brazil and the UK. *demonstrates how these ways of thinking about classroom talk can be drawn upon to inform the professional development of science teachers. *offers an innovative research methodology, based on sociocultural theory, for analysing classroom talk. *expands upon the ways in which sociocultural theory has been systematically applied to analysing classroom contexts. This book offers a powerful set of tools for thinking and talking about the day-to-day practices of contemporary science classrooms. It contains messages of fundamental importance and insight for all of those who are interested in reflecting on the interactions of science teaching and learning, whether in the context of teaching, higher degree study, or research.
Book Synopsis Learning to Write by : Gunther Kress
Download or read book Learning to Write written by Gunther Kress and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this influential and classic text poses two questions: what is it that a child learns when he or she learns to write? What can we learn about children, society and ourselves, by looking at this process? The book is based on a close analysis of a series of written texts by primary school children and is written for student teachers with little or no knowledge of linguistics. In this new edition, Gunther Kress has made extensive revisions in the light of recent developments in linguistics and in education. The theoretical focus is now a social semiotic one, which allows a fundamental rethinking of issues such as 'preliteracy' and broad social and cultural questions around the making of texts.
Book Synopsis Making Sense of Secondary Science by : Rosalind Driver
Download or read book Making Sense of Secondary Science written by Rosalind Driver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-11-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children begin secondary school they already have knowledge and ideas about many aspects of the natural world from their experiences both in primary classes and outside school. These ideas, right or wrong, form the basis of all they subsequently learn. Research has shown that teaching is unlikely to be effective unless it takes into account the position from which the learner starts. Making Sense of Secondary Science provides a concise and accessible summary of the research that has been done internationally in this area. The research findings are arranged in three main sections: * life and living processes * materials and their properties * physical processes. Full bibliographies in each section allow interested readers to pursue the themes further. Much of this material has hitherto been available only in limited circulation specialist journals or in unpublished research. Its publication in this convenient form will be welcomed by all researchers in science education and by practicing science teachers continuing their professional development, who want to deepen their understanding of how their children think and learn.
Book Synopsis The Content Of Science: A Constructivist Approach To Its Teaching And learning by : Peter J. Fensham
Download or read book The Content Of Science: A Constructivist Approach To Its Teaching And learning written by Peter J. Fensham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1994. Leading scholars in science education from eight countries on four continents and ex-pert practising science teachers (primary and secondary) wrote about the teaching and learning of particular science content or skills, and hence how different science content requires different sorts of teaching and learning. Having shared the papers, they then met to discuss them and subsequently revised them. The result is a coherent set of chapters that share valuable insights about the teaching and learning of science. Some chapters consider the detail of specific topics (e.g. floating and sinking, soil and chemical change), some describe innovative procedures, others provide powerful theory. Together they provide a comprehensive analysis of constructivist learning and teaching implications.
