Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at the role of plant spirits in shamanic rituals from around the world • Shows how shamans heal using their knowledge of plant spirits as well as the plant’s “medical properties” • Explores the core methods of plant shamanism--soul retrieval, spirit extraction, and sin eating--and includes techniques for connecting with plant spirits • Includes extensive field interviews with master shamans of all traditions In Plant Spirit Shamanism, Ross Heaven and Howard G. Charing explore the use of one of the major allies of shamans for healing, seeing, dreaming, and empowerment--plant spirits. After observing great similarities in the use of plants among shamans throughout the world, they discovered the reason behind these similarities: Rather than dealing with the “medical properties” of the plants or specific healing techniques, shamans commune with the spirits of the plants themselves. From their years of in-depth shamanic work in the Amazon, Haiti, and Europe, including extensive field interviews with master shamans, Heaven and Charing present the core methods of plant shamanism used in healing rituals the world over: soul retrieval, spirit extraction, sin eating, and the Amazonian tradition of pusanga (love medicine). They explain the techniques shamans use to establish connections to plant spirits and provide practical exercises as well as a directory of traditional Amazonian and Caribbean healing plants and their common North American equivalents so readers can ex-plore the world of plant spirits and make allies of their own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going beyond the frameworks of the anthropology of death, Articulate Necrographies offers a dramatic new way of studying the dead and their interactions with the living. Traditional anthropology has tended to dichotomize societies where death “speaks” from those where death is “silent” – the latter is deemed “scientific” and the former “religious” or “magical”. The collection introduces the concept of “necrography” to describe the way death and the dead create their own kinds of biographies in and among the living, and asks what kinds of articulations and silences this in turn produces in the lives of those affected.

Book excerpt: "You want the dreams they dreamed of to come true-Then They Do." That line from one of country music's best songs in recent memory pretty much sums up the way millions of parents feel about their children. Many times as they are growing up and driving you crazy, you dream of when they will be out of the house-and you will have your life back again-and then they do. Then They Do is filled with heartwarming, and sometimes tear-inducing, stories from parents about cherishing the moments with your children and celebrating the fine young men and women they have become. This book will serve as a reminder to parents to seize those moments when their tiny ones are still underfoot, and will be a nostalgia-inducing keepsake for those whose children have moved upwards and onwards. A fine gift for parents young and old or for grown children in the midst of raising their own families.

Book excerpt: Espiritismo Criollo is not a New World tradition, nor is it a New Age Concept, it is not exclusive to Puerto Rico, and it was not founded by Kardecian Spiritualism. It has always been present on the island of Borinquen, always changing, evolving, and assimilating to the changes around it. Espiritismo Criollo Folclorica de;a Mesa Blanca is just the Puerto Rican experience, how we as a culture, perceive the realm of Spirit. It is the tradition of the rural Jibaro folk, that has its roots in the blood and sweat of the Taino, African and Spanish people of the island of Boriken, also known as Puerto Rico.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Repeatedly and powerfully throughout Cuban history, the mulata, a woman of mixed racial identity, features prominently in Cuban visual and performative culture. Tracing the figure, Alison Fraunhar looks at the representation and performance in both elite and popular culture. She also tracks how characteristics associated with these women have accrued across the Atlantic world. Widely understood to embody the bridge between European subject and African other, the mulata contains the sensuality attributed to Africans in a body more closely resembling the European ideal of beauty. This symbol bears far-reaching implications, with shifting, contradictory cultural meanings in Cuba. Fraunhar explores these complex paradigms, how, why, and for whom the image was useful, and how it was both subverted and asserted from the colonial period to the present. From the early seventeenth century through Cuban independence in 1899 up to the late revolutionary era, Fraunhar illustrates the ambiguous figure's role in nationhood, citizenship, and commercialism. She analyzes images including key examples of nineteenth-century graphic arts, avant-garde painting and magazine covers of the Republican era, cabaret and film performance, and contemporary iterations of gender. Fraunhar's study stands out for attending to the phenomenon of mulataje not only in elite production such as painting, but also in popular forms: popular theater, print culture, later films, and other media where stereotypes take hold. Indeed, in contemporary Cuba, mulataje remains a popular theme with Cubans as well as foreigners in drag shows, reflecting queerness in visual culture.

Book excerpt: FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ENGLISH a timeless tribute to one of the world’s most marginalized peoples and the riveting tale of one boy’s journey to manhood Sweeping us into the world of the roma as fascism gathers force and the Holocaust looms on the horizon, The Color of Smoke is a thoroughly absorbing story that abounds in unforgettable characters. There is the adolescent narrator, torn between his people and a society that both entices him and rejects him. From his rise in school to his first sexual encounters, from hunger to police harassment, he treads a precarious path--one marked by moments of beauty and poignancy along with bawdiness, violence, and high adventure. And we come to know a people bound as much by a rich moral fabric as by the land and by the horses they love. By an author who himself came of age in a Romani settlement during World War II, The Color of Smoke is a must read for anyone seeking a stunningly new, authoritative window onto the lives of the dispossessed--with haunting implications for today.Magisterial in scope and yet intensely personal, it combines beautiful prose with profound reflections on the human condition as only great literature can. From the Trade Paperback edition.
