El pensamiento de Descartes obedece a un proyecto epistemológico general que no es tenido en consideración, cuando se intenta revisar sus concepciones sobre la cuestión de la mente. 2.1. Para comprender lo que Descartes verdaderamente entendía cuando hablaba de la mente hay que tener en cuenta que, a lo largo de toda su obra, mantuvo un diálogo crítico con la Escolástica, y que este diálogo es la espina dorsal de su proyecto. 2.2. Su propósito general era ampliar, a todos los ámbitos posibles, incluido el sensible terreno del hombre, la concepción mecanicista de la naturaleza. Éste es el marco conceptual del paradigma cartesiano de lo mental. 2.3. La crítica de los sentidos es uno de los distintivos que mejor caracteriza al racionalismo cartesiano, constituyendo uno de los pilares más firmes de su concepción del conocimiento científico y de su idea de mente racional. 2.4. Hasker begins by mounting a compelling critique of the dominant paradigm in philosophy of mind, showing that contemporary forms of materialism are seriously deficient in confronting crucial aspects of experience. He further holds that popular attempts to explain the workings of mind in terms of mechanistic physics cannot succeed. He then criticizes the two versions of substance dualism most widely accepted today—Cartesian and Thomistic—and presents his own theory of emergent dualism.
