Download or read book Au Naturel written by Lara Anderson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary naturalism, within the Hispanic context, has traditionally been read as a graphic realist school or movement linked predominantly to late nineteenth century literary production. The essays in Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism—written by scholars from different generations, nationalities and ideological backgrounds—propose a major revisionist contribution to the study of Hispanic naturalism. Based on a theoretical proposal that re-semanticizes naturalismo as a diachronic counter-metanarrative phenomenon that transcends the chronological and geographic limitations imposed by traditional criticism on naturalism, the collection provides new readings of traditional naturalist fare as well as re-readings of works that have not been read, within the bounds of conventional criticism, as naturalist. Re-read within the proposed theoretical framework, its essays demonstrate the countless ways in which Hispanic naturalist texts–literary and more recently, filmic—continue to frankly engage the societal problematics that has impeded true social, political, economic and cultural progress from taking place in the Hispanic world from the turbulent fin-de-siècle period of the nineteenth century through the present day, globalized context. Au Naturel: (Re)Reading Hispanic Naturalism is thus also an open invitation to the scholarly community to re-consider other socio-critical works within the Hispanic naturalist context that observe and reflection upon social issues that continue to plague Hispanic society today.

Book Synopsis Spain's Forgotten Novelist by : Brian J. Dendle
Download or read book Spain's Forgotten Novelist written by Brian J. Dendle and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the century, Armando Palacio Valdes (1853-1938) enjoyed the reputation of being one of Spain's leading novelists. Widely translated into other languages, he was hailed enthusiastically by such foreign critics as Edmund Gosse and William Dean Howells. In the twentieth century, he was regarded as a "safe" novelist, the paladin of middle-class Catholic virtues. Recently, however, his novels are again attracting interest in Spain. In Spain's Forgotten Novelist, Brian J. Dendle critically examines Palacio Valdes's career and reputation, casting doubt on his benign image and veracity, and establishing that the sales of Palacio Valdes's books in translation were much less than the author claimed.
Book Synopsis Genealogical Fictions by : Jobst Welge
Download or read book Genealogical Fictions written by Jobst Welge and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving through time, he uncovers often-unsuspected novelistic continuities and international transformations and echoes, from Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent, published in 1800, to G. Tomasi di Lampedusa's 1958 book Il Gattopardo.By revealing the "family resemblance" of novels from Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil, this volume shows how genealogical narratives take on special significance in contexts of cultural periphery. Welge links private and public histories, while simultaneously integrating detailed accounts of various literary fields across the globe. In combining theories of the novel, recent discussions of cultural geography, and new approaches to genealogical narratives, Genealogical Fictions addresses a significant part of European and Latin American literary history in which texts from different national cultures illuminate each other in unsuspected ways and reveal the repetition, as well as the variation, among them.
