Book Synopsis Dreams and Visions by : Nancy van Deusen
Download or read book Dreams and Visions written by Nancy van Deusen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dreams and Visions have constituted an important topic and point of departure in the past; but also continue to play a present role in literature, political thought, economic theory, and in the arts. An essential historical topos, Dreams and Visions--the second in a series that projects past issues into the present--brings significant contributions from an interdisciplinary spectrum of standpoints in order to discover fresh insights. Perhaps this is the essence, in any case, of "Vision"--to discover new, fresh ways of conceptualizing a problem, topic, or historical enquiry, which is the goal of this volume. Contributors are Tamara Albertini, David Bevington, Eolene M. Boyd-MacMillan, John N. Crossley, J. Harold Ellens, Wendy Furman-Adams, Robert W. Hanning, Virginia K. Henderson, Birgitta Lindros Wohl, Ann R. Meyer, Ana M. Montero, Michael Murrin, Wendy Petersen Boring, Conrad Rudolph, Nancy Van Deusen, Joanna Woods-Marsden, and Meg Worley.

Book Synopsis The Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages by : Rosalynn Voaden
Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Translation in the Middle Ages written by Rosalynn Voaden and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest of the writers of these essays in the intricacies and implications of translation in the Middle Ages, or of the translation of medieval texts in te modern period, has resulted in a diverse and intellectually stimulating volume. The papers in this volume, written in either English, French, or Spanish, approach translation from a wide variety of perspectives and offer a range of interpretations of the concept of translation. The volume contains essays ranging in time from the Anglo Saxon period to the present, and in topic from medieval recipe books to arguments in favour of women administering the sacrament. Languages studied include non-European languages as well as Latin and numerous European vernaculars as both source and target languages. As any translator or student of translation quickly becomes aware, it is impossible to divorce language from culture. All the contributors to this volume struggle with the complexities of translation as a cultural act, even when the focus would seem to be specifically linguistic. It is these complexities which lend the study of the theory and practice of translation in the Middle Ages its enduring fascinatio

Book Synopsis Manuscript Diversity, Meaning, and Variance in Juan Manuel's El Conde Lucanor by : Laurence De Looze
Download or read book Manuscript Diversity, Meaning, and Variance in Juan Manuel's El Conde Lucanor written by Laurence De Looze and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juan Manuel's El Conde Lucanor was arguably one of the great masterworks of early modern Spain. Although the work appears in five very different manuscript versions from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, most modern editions of El Conde Lucanor have neglected to account for the fact that it was part of a manuscript tradition, and that its meaning is substantially affected when its original forms are not taken in to account. With Manuscript Diversity, Meaning, and Variance in Juan Manuel's El Conde Lucanor, Laurence de Looze demonstrates how the meaning of Juan Manuel's work changes depending on how the work is 'performed' in particular manuscripts. This study proceeds from the assumption that, in a pre-printing press world, each new copy or 'performance' of a work creates new meaning. By adopting this approach and by focusing on Parts II-V of the texts, de Looze argues that El Conde Lucanor raises questions about the interretation, intelligibility, and the production of knowledge. De Looze's complex and nuanced reading sheds new light on an important work and makes a significant contribution to medieval studies, Spanish studies, and the history of the book.
