Book Synopsis Constructing Early Modern Empires by :
Download or read book Constructing Early Modern Empires written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-03-31 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of proprietorships or ‘private’ colonies in imperial development has not received the attention it deserves, notwithstanding recent scholarly emphasis on ‘state-building’. The continued use of these ‘private’ devices, even as early modern European nation-states grew more potent, is not only interesting, but is indeed normative though invariably missing from modern studies of empire. This collection provides in-depth analyses of the workings of the proprietorships themselves (rather than proprietary colonies) and in studies ranging from South Carolina to Nieuw Nederland to French West Africa to Brasil, broadens this discussion beyond British North America. Contributors include: Mickaël Augeron, Kenneth Banks, Sarah Barber, Philip Boucher, Olivier Caporossi, Leslie Choquette, David Dewar, Jaap Jacobs, Maxine N. Lurie, Debra A. Meyers, L.H. Roper, James O’Neil Spady, Bertrand Van Ruymbeke, Cécile Vidal, and Laurent Vidal.

Book Synopsis The Spanish Caribbean and the Atlantic World in the Long Sixteenth Century by : Ida Altman
Download or read book The Spanish Caribbean and the Atlantic World in the Long Sixteenth Century written by Ida Altman and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Caribbean and the Atlantic World in the Long Sixteenth Century breaks new ground in articulating the early Spanish Caribbean as a distinct and diverse group of colonies loosely united under Spanish rule for roughly a century prior to the establishment of other European colonies. In the sixteenth century no part of the Americas was more diverse; international; or as closely tied to Spain, the islands of the Atlantic, western Africa, and the Spanish American mainland than the Caribbean. The Caribbean experienced rapid growth during this period, displayed considerable ethnic and religious diversity, developed extensive networks of exchange both within and beyond the region, and played an important role in the broader Spanish colonization of the Americas. Contributors address topics such as the role of religious orders, the development of transatlantic and regional commercial systems, insular and regional political dynamics in relation to imperial objectives, the formation of colonial society, and the effects on Caribbean colonial society of the importation and incorporation of large numbers of indigenous captives and enslaved Africans.

Book Synopsis Indios mineros y encomenderos by : Román Tamez, Ángel Luis
Download or read book Indios mineros y encomenderos written by Román Tamez, Ángel Luis and published by Editorial Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The School of Salamanca: A Case of Global Knowledge Production by :
Download or read book The School of Salamanca: A Case of Global Knowledge Production written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, a growing number of studies have highlighted the importance of the ‘School of Salamanca’ for the emergence of colonial normative regimes and the formation of a language of normativity on a global scale. According to this influential account, American and Asian actors usually appear as passive recipients of normative knowledge produced in Europe. This book proposes a different perspective and shows, through a knowledge historical approach and several case studies, that the School of Salamanca has to be considered both an epistemic community and a community of practice that cannot be fixed to any individual place. Instead, the School of Salamanca encompassed a variety of different sites and actors throughout the world and thus represents a case of global knowledge production. Moutin, and Marco Toste.
