Book Synopsis Mexican Literature by : David William Foster
Download or read book Mexican Literature written by David William Foster and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico has a rich literary heritage that extends back over centuries to the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. This major reference work surveys more than five hundred years of Mexican literature from a sociocultural perspective. More than merely a catalog of names and titles, it examines in detail the literary phenomena that constitute Mexico's most significant and original contributions to literature. Recognizing that no one scholar can authoritatively cover so much territory, David William Foster has assembled a group of specialists, some of them younger scholars who write from emerging trends in Latin American and Mexican literary scholarship. The topics they discuss include pre-Columbian indigenous writing (Joanna O'Connell), Colonial literature (Lee H. Dowling), Romanticism (Margarita Vargas), nineteenth-century prose fiction (Mario Martín Flores), Modernism (Bart L. Lewis), major twentieth-century genres (narrative, Lanin A. Gyurko; poetry, Adriana García; theater, Kirsten F. Nigro), the essay (Martin S. Stabb), literary criticism (Daniel Altamiranda), and literary journals (Luis Peña). Each essay offers detailed analysis of significant issues and major texts and includes an annotated bibliography of important critical sources and reference works.
Book Synopsis The Contemporary Mexican Chronicle by : Ignacio Corona
Download or read book The Contemporary Mexican Chronicle written by Ignacio Corona and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crónica, or chronicle, which crosses the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, literature and journalism, is a highly polemical and widely read form of writing in Mexico and throughout Latin America, where it plays an influential cultural, social, and historical role. For the first time, this book addresses the theory and practice of the chronicle in twentieth-century Mexico. Contributions by Mexican writers such as Carlos Monsiváis and Elena Poniatowska and essays on a wide range of texts and authors provide diverse perspectives on the chronicle as a literary genre and as a cultural and social practice.

Book Synopsis Culture, Politics and National Identity in Mexican Literature and Film, 1929-1952 by : Anne T. Doremus
Download or read book Culture, Politics and National Identity in Mexican Literature and Film, 1929-1952 written by Anne T. Doremus and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1929 to 1952 Mexico underwent a period of intense nationalism as the state, newly emerging from the Mexican Revolution, sought to legitimize itself, consolidate its institutions, and promote economic growth. As a consequence, these years also witnessed a fervent search for national self-awareness in the cultural sphere. This work contrasts constructions of national identity in some of the most renowned literary works of the period with those in some of the most popular films, revealing their distinct functions within the nationalist project. It demonstrates that in spite of their striking dissimilarities, articulations of a Mexican consciousness in these two mediums were complementary within the framework of nationalism, as they satisfied and shaped the interests and desires of distinct sectors of Mexican society.
