Book Synopsis Indigenous Cosmolectics by : Gloria Elizabeth Chacón
Download or read book Indigenous Cosmolectics written by Gloria Elizabeth Chacón and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America's Indigenous writers have long labored under the limits of colonialism, but in the late twentieth and twenty-first centuries, they have constructed a literary corpus that moves them beyond those parameters. Gloria E. Chacon considers the growing number of contemporary Indigenous writers who turn to Maya and Zapotec languages alongside Spanish translations of their work to challenge the tyranny of monolingualism and cultural homogeneity. Chacon argues that these Maya and Zapotec authors reconstruct an Indigenous literary tradition rooted in an Indigenous cosmolectics, a philosophy originally grounded in pre-Columbian sacred conceptions of the cosmos, time, and place, and now expressed in creative writings. More specifically, she attends to Maya and Zapotec literary and cultural forms by theorizing kab'awil as an Indigenous philosophy. Tackling the political and literary implications of this work, Chacon argues that Indigenous writers' use of familiar genres alongside Indigenous language, use of oral traditions, and new representations of selfhood and nation all create space for expressions of cultural and political autonomy. Chacon recognizes that Indigenous writers draw from universal literary strategies but nevertheless argues that this literature is a vital center for reflecting on Indigenous ways of knowing and is a key artistic expression of decolonization.

Book Synopsis Escritura de Nuu Dzaui by : Maarten Evert Reinoud Gerard Nicolaas Jansen
Download or read book Escritura de Nuu Dzaui written by Maarten Evert Reinoud Gerard Nicolaas Jansen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the development of writing in the region of Ñuu Dzaui (the Mixtec people in Southern Mexico) from its earliest manifestations up to the present. Specialist essays (mostly in English, some in Spanish) present new archeological data, contribute to the decipherment of precolonial pictorial manuscripts, and analyze historical documents written in Mesoamerican languages during the colonial period. From this diachronic perspective much attention is given to the changing social contexts as well as to methodological and interpretive issues. In addition, contemporary projects are discussed, which register oral tradition, create space for native languages within the national school system, and produce new poetic works. The inclusion of two Mixtec documentary films on a inserted dvd provokes important comments on the representation of indigenous American cultures in general.

Book Synopsis Words of the True Peoples/Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos by : Carlos Montemayor
Download or read book Words of the True Peoples/Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos written by Carlos Montemayor and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume 1 contains narratives and essays by Mexican indigenous writers. Their texts appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Frischmann and Montemayor have abundantly annotated the English, Spanish, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that trace the development of indigenous texts, literacy, and writing. These supporting materials make the anthology especially accessible and interesting for nonspecialist readers seeking a greater understanding of Mexico's indigenous peoples. The other volumes of this work will be Volume 2: Poetry/Poesía and Volume 3: Theater/Teatro.
