Download or read book Cruz / Ortiz written by Antonio Cruz and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 1996-08 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent of a new generation of Spanish architects, this Seville-based team has transformed the practice of architecture with the theory that "a building should explain itself." Through a language of industrial materials, Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz demonstrate their technological prowess while at the same time creating simple geometries expressive of a spare modernism. Their work displays a remarkable ability to fuse the traditional architecture of their native Seville with the novelty of their abstract explorations of form. Works presented include Seville's Santa Justa Train Station, the Madrid Community Sports Stadium, the Huelva Bus Station, and a Housing Estate project in Tharsis. Cruz/Ortiz also contains a complete chronology of buildings and projects and an introduction by Rafael Moneo. The monograph documents the team's impressive work through numerous photographs and drawings, accompanied by project descriptions and commentary. Cruz and Ortiz are the recipients of the First National Prize for Spanish Architecture. Their work has been exhibited internationally

Book Synopsis Image, Text, Architecture by : Robin Wilson
Download or read book Image, Text, Architecture written by Robin Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image, Text, Architecture brings a radical and detailed analysis of the modern and contemporary architectural media, addressing issues of architectural criticism, architectural photography and the role of journal editors. It covers examples as diverse as an article by British artist Paul Nash in The Architectural Review, 1940, an early project by French architects Lacaton & Vassal published in the journal 2G, 2001, and recent photography by Hisao Suzuki for the Spanish journal El Croquis. At the intersection of image and text the book also reveals the role of the utopian impulse within the architectural media, drawing on theories of utopian discourse from the work of the French semiotician and art theorist Louis Marin, and the American Marxist critic Fredric Jameson. Through this it builds a fresh theoretical approach to journal studies, revealing a hitherto unexplored dimension of "latent" or "unconscious" discourse within the media portrait of architecture. The purpose of this enquiry is to highlight moments where a different type of critical voice emerges on the architectural journal page, indicating the possibility of a more progressive engagement with the media as a platform for critical and speculative thinking about architecture, and to rethink the journals’ role within architectural history.
Download or read book Just Enough written by Azby Brown and published by Stone Bridge Press, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the mindset of traditional Japanese society can guide our own efforts to lead a green lifestyle today. If we want to live sustainably, how should we feel about nature? About waste? About our forests and rivers? About food? Just Enough is a book of stories and sketches that give valuable insight into what it is like to live in a sustainable society by describing life in Japan some two hundred years ago, during the late Edo period, when cities and villages faced many of the same environmental challenges we do today and met them beautifully and inventively.
Download or read book Toyo Ito written by Toyoo Itō and published by . This book was released on 2002-07-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Architectural Documents series sees the publication of the first monograph on one of the most extraordinary figures on the contemporary architectural scene, Toyo Ito of Japan (b. 1941). Since the 1970s Ito has been carrying out research into building materials, light and space, research which has led him to design buildings that he himself has defined as "non material": aerial structures, fluid and permeable spaces which avoid rigid compositional geometries. Over the years Ito has gradually simplified his language, and his work, the structure of which has increasingly lost importance, can be studied as a series of variations on the layering of the facade. His obsession with lightness and transparency are expressed to the full in the most important work of his creative career, the Sendai Mediatheque (1995-2001). This book, with an exceptional body of illustrations, presents the Japanese architects most significant projects, starting with the Aluminium House of 1970-1 through to the most recent project for the Mahler 4 office block in Amsterdam (2000-1). The appendix includes a complete list of Toyo Ito's works, a selection of his writings, as well as a biographical summary and up-to-date bibliography.

Download or read book Practice written by Stan Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversant in contemporary theory and architectural history, Stan Allen argues that concepts in architecture are not imported from other disciplines, but emerge through the materials and procedures of architectural practice itself. Drawing on his own experience as a working architect, he examines the ways in which the tools available to the architect affect the design and production of buildings. This second edition includes revised essays together with previously unpublished work. Allen’s seminal piece on Field Conditions is included in this reworked, revised and redesigned volume. A compelling read for student and practitioner alike.

Book Synopsis Lina Bo Bardi 100 by : Lina Bo Bardi
Download or read book Lina Bo Bardi 100 written by Lina Bo Bardi and published by Hatje Cantz Pub. This book was released on 2014 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of Italio-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi's one hundredth birthday, this richly illustrated volume presents an overview of her oeuvre and highlights iconic buildings, such as her own home, the so-called Casa de Vidro, the Museo de Arte de Sao Paulo, and the cultural center SESC Pompeia. This is a spectacular book on a celebrated architect. Spanning architecture, stage sets, fashion, and furniture, her work drew inspiration from the International Style, which she translated into her own visual language. Fundamental to her work was her thoughtful engagement with her adopted country of Brazil, its culture, society, and politics, and she productively and provocatively voiced her sometimes radical views through designs, exhibitions, and writings.

Book Synopsis Site and Composition by : Enis Aldallal
Download or read book Site and Composition written by Enis Aldallal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site and Composition examines design strategies and tactics in site making. It is concerned with the need for a renewed understanding of the site in the twenty-first century and the need for a critical position regarding the continued tendency to view the site as an isolated ‘fragment’ severed from its wider context. The book argues revisiting the traditional instruments or means of both siting and composition in Architecture to explore their true potential in achieving connections between site and context. Through the various examples studied here it is suggested that such instrumental means have the potential for achieving greater poetic outcomes. The book focuses on the works of twentieth century architects of wide-ranging persuasion – Peter Eisenman, Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvaro Siza, Herzog and de Meuron, and Charles Correa, for example – who have strived in quite different ways to achieve deeper engagement with the physical qualities of place and context. Departing from a reconsideration of the fragment, Site and Composition emphasises the role of the ‘positive fragment’ in achieving both historical continuity and renewed wholeness. The potential of both planimetric and sectional compositional methods are explored, emphasising the importance of reciprocity between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ – between fragment and the whole, as well as materiality. Written in a clear and accessible manner, this book makes vital reading for both researchers and students of architecture and urbanism.
