Book Synopsis The Architecture of Art Museums by : Ronnie Self
Download or read book The Architecture of Art Museums written by Ronnie Self and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a building type, art museums are unparalleled for the opportunities they provide for architectural investigation and experimentation. They are frequently key components of urban revitalization and often push the limits of building technology. Art museums are places of pleasure, education and contemplation. They are remarkable by their prominence and sheer quantity, and their lessons are useful for all architects and for all building types. This book provides explicit and comprehensive coverage of the most important museums built in the first ten years of the 21st Century in the United States and Europe. By dissecting and analyzing each case, Ronnie Self allows the reader to get under the skin of each design and fully understand the process behind these remarkable buildings. Richly designed with full technical illustrations and sections the book includes the work of Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Peter Cook & Colin Fournier, Renzo Piano, Yoshi Taniguchi, Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, SANAA, Daniel Libeskind, Diller Scofidio & Renfro, Steven Holl, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Bernard Tschumi, Sauerbruch Hutton, and Shigeru Ban & Jean de Gastines. Together these diverse projects provide a catalogue of design solutions for the contemporary museum and a snapshot of current architectural thought and culture. One of few books on this subject written by an architect, Self’s analysis thoroughly and critically appraises each project from multiple aspects and crucially takes the reader from concept to building. This is an essential book for any professional engaged in designing a museum.

Book Synopsis Image, Text, Architecture by : Robin Wilson
Download or read book Image, Text, Architecture written by Robin Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image, Text, Architecture brings a radical and detailed analysis of the modern and contemporary architectural media, addressing issues of architectural criticism, architectural photography and the role of journal editors. It covers examples as diverse as an article by British artist Paul Nash in The Architectural Review, 1940, an early project by French architects Lacaton & Vassal published in the journal 2G, 2001, and recent photography by Hisao Suzuki for the Spanish journal El Croquis. At the intersection of image and text the book also reveals the role of the utopian impulse within the architectural media, drawing on theories of utopian discourse from the work of the French semiotician and art theorist Louis Marin, and the American Marxist critic Fredric Jameson. Through this it builds a fresh theoretical approach to journal studies, revealing a hitherto unexplored dimension of "latent" or "unconscious" discourse within the media portrait of architecture. The purpose of this enquiry is to highlight moments where a different type of critical voice emerges on the architectural journal page, indicating the possibility of a more progressive engagement with the media as a platform for critical and speculative thinking about architecture, and to rethink the journals’ role within architectural history.

Download or read book Lacaton & Vassal written by Anne Lacaton and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monographic book designed by Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal, is published in conjunction with their exhibtion at the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine. It gathers all the projects designed by their firm into thematic groups (beginnings, landscape, dreams, freedom, Inhabiting, transformation, enchanting and city) and weaves them into a story that challenges their proposals. Their approach, involving an in-depth reflection on the ethical dimension of architecture, is founded upon both the generosity of the dwelling and the pleasure of the dweller. In denying the obvious, they seek in its place what is essential and specific to each situation and context. Lacaton and Vassal propose architecture that allows us greater freedom.

Book Synopsis Constructing a New Agenda by : Krista Sykes
Download or read book Constructing a New Agenda written by Krista Sykes and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This follow-up to Kate Nesbitt's best-selling anthology Theorizing a New Agenda collects twenty-eight essays that address architecture theory from the mid-1990s, where Nesbitt left off, through the present. Kristin Sykes offers an overview of the myriad approaches and attitudes adopted by architects and architectural theorists during this era. Multiple themes including the impact of digital technologies on processes of architectural design, production, materiality, and representation; the implications of globalization and networks of information; the growing emphasis on sustainable and green architecture; and the phenomenon of the 'starchitect and iconic architecture appear against a background colored by architectural theory, as it existed from the 1960s on, in a period of transition (if not crisis) that centers around the perceived abyss between theory and practice. Theory's transitional state persists today, rendering its immediate history particularly relevant to contemporary thought and practice.
