Para ello se han manejado los aspectos cualitativos y cuantitativos de las relaciones económicas, centrándose en este caso en las relaciones de mercado, aunque contemplando otros aspectos del pensamiento en general del hombre en sociedad. El resultado ha sido la necesidad de conjugar la existencia continua de dos formas de economía que se influyen continuamente, como son la de prestigio y la de mercado, correspondientes a dos formas de percibir la realidad, la emocional y la racional, que no se pueden dar de forma pura. Todo ello contemplado a la luz de unos esquemas de horizontes mentales integrados, que permiten darle una dimensión a la vez rectilínea y circular en el tiempo a los distintos niveles de una misma civilización, que coexisten aunque unos vayan destacando sobre otros. Se aborda finalmente un ejemplo práctico. Consiste en una reflexión general sobre la evolución de la economía en un espacio (el Mediterráneo) y un tiempo concreto (3200 a.C.-500 d.C.), como dimensiones de una misma realidad. Ello ha permitido no establecer cortes entre la economía llamada palaciega y la de mercado impersonal, abordando de una forma global y coherente todo el mundo mediterráneo.

Instead, there has been an unconnected series of micro-regional studies looking at particular areas, from the river Ebro in Spain round to Italy on the land front, and from the Balearic Islands to Corsica, Sardinia and even Sicily as regards the seaborne aspect. In contrast, the aim of this volume is to push the historical and archaeological debates about Rome’s expansion beyond these traditional geographical boundaries and the discipline-based previous research. The entire north-western Mediterranean is treated as a micro-region and is addressed using various interdisciplinary approaches. The result is to provide an innovative and comprehensive overview of the north-western Mediterranean in a period of historical crossroads, aided particularly by focusing on the connectivity and integration within this region as two interrelated issues. While Republican Rome enforced itself as an expansive power towards the West, all sorts of polities, military operations and individuals also played a significant role in creating interconnectivity and integration of the north-western Mediterranean into a new hybrid reality. In order to uncover such processes of hybridisation, contributors to this volume were encouraged to focus on the historical, archaeological and numismatic material from several areas within the region, and to incorporate aspects of interdisciplinary methodologies in order to address the region’s military, political, social and economic interconnections with Italy, Rome and each other within the overall period.

Book excerpt: In the past decade, there has been a surge of Anglophone scholarship regarding Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which has led to a reframing of the discourses around Spanish culture of this period. Despite this new interest-in which painting, in particular, has been singled out for treatment-a comprehensive study of sculpture collections and the status of sculpture in Spain has yet to be produced. Sculpture Collections in Early Modern Spain is the first book to assess the phenomenon of sculpture collecting and in doing so, it alters the previously held notion that Spanish society placed little value in this art form. Di Dio and Coppel reveal that, due to the problems and expense of their transport from Italy, sculptures were in fact status symbols in the culture. Thus they were an important component of the collections formed by the royal family, cultivated noble collectors, humanists, and artists who had pretensions of high status. This book is especially useful to specialists for its discussion of the typologies of collections and objects, and of the mechanics of state gifts, transport, and collection display in this period. An appendix presents extensive archival documentation, most of which has never before been published. The authors have uncovered hundreds of new documents about sculpture in Spain; and new documentary evidence allows them to propose several new identifications and attributions. Firmly grounded in extensive archival research, Sculpture Collections in Early Modern Spain redefines the socio-political and art historical importance of sculpture in early modern Spain.
