La historia de la botánica es una disciplina muy relacionada con las materias médicas y especialmente farmacéuticas. En realidad, unas y otras son dependientes desde tiempo inmemorial. Hoy día cada vez más distanciadas, en el siglo XVIII y XIX, estuvieron fuertemente conectadas y el desarrollo de las ciencias botánicas se debió fundamentalmente a médicos y farmacéuticos, más tarde, a finales del siglo XIX y especialmente en el siglo XX, la botánica comenzó a estar dirigida y desarrollada en parte, fuera de las ramas médicas y en menor medida de las farmacéuticas. El estudio que se presenta es una aportación al conocimiento de la diversidad de vegetales que encontró el boticario Francisco Villalobos a finales del siglo XVIII, en el término de Alconchel (Badajoz) y en las zonas circunvecinas. En el trabajo se contextualiza al autor, el catálogo en su estructura y contenidos, aportando más de 300 vegetales diferentes para el entorno estudiado, se simplifican sus contenidos a fin de divulgarlo, y se pone en valor en el contexto actual la dimensión de un catálogo de plantas realizado en el siglo XVIII, con los escasos conocimientos científicos que supuestamente se disponía.

They remained at the center of developments for centuries thereafter, since the bulk of the Hispanic population settled among them and they bore the brunt of cultural contact. This collection of thirteen essays (five of them previously unpublished) by the leading authority on the postconquest Nahuas and Nahua-Spanish interaction brings together pieces that reflect various facets of the author's research interests. Underlying most of the pieces is the author's pioneering large-scale use of Nahua manuscripts to illuminate the society and culture of native Mexicans in the Spanish colonial period. The picture of the Nahuas that emerges shows them far less at odds with the colonial world form it what is useful to them, and far more capable to maintaining their own pre-conquest identity, than has previously been suggested.
