Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I want to connect what concerns people today with what it was about Jesus that fascinated Luke, as a man of his lifetime... I want every reader to be guided by Luke to Jesus, to gain new insights into Jesus, and to discover in him the one who gives meaning to our existence, heals our wounds and leads us to true life.' In Jesus: The Image of Humanity, best-selling author Anslem Grün writes an introduction to the Gospel of Luke that will inspire those who find it difficult to encounter the real Jesus in the writings of the New Testament. He shows the Jesus of Luke's Gospel to be the key to a spiritually fruitful life, something many biblical exegetes fail to do. He pierces through alienating and inherited impressions of the text to show that what Luke is giving us is a record of his own experience of Jesus. He sees the Gospel as an expertly composed, entertaining, and valuable piece of publicity on behalf of the Jesus movement; and its message is as life changing in the twenty-first century as it was in the first century.

Book Synopsis The Art of Peace by : Juliana Geran Pilon
Download or read book The Art of Peace written by Juliana Geran Pilon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sun Tzu, author of 'The Art of War', believed that the acme of leadership consists in figuring out how to subdue the enemy with the least amount of fighting a fact that America's Founders also understood, and practiced with astonishing success. For it to work, however, a people must possess both the ability and the willingness to use all available instruments of power in peace as much as in war. US foreign policy has increasingly neglected the instruments of civilian power and become overly dependent on lethal solutions to conflict. The steep rise in unconventional conflict has increased the need for diplomatic and other non-hard power tools of statecraft. The United States can no longer afford to sit on the proverbial three-legged national security stool ("military, diplomacy, development"), where one leg is a lot longer than either of the other two, almost forgetting altogether the fourth leg information, especially strategic communication and public diplomacy. The United States isn't so much becoming militarized as DE civilianized. According to Sun Tzu, self-knowledge is as important as knowledge of one's enemy: "if you know neither yourself nor the enemy, you will succumb in every battle." Alarmingly, the United States is deficient on both counts. And though we can stand to lose a few battles, the stakes of losing the war itself in this age of nuclear proliferation are too high to contemplate.

Book Synopsis Personification in the Greek World by : Judith Herrin
Download or read book Personification in the Greek World written by Judith Herrin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personification, the anthropomorphic representation of any non-human thing, is a ubiquitous feature of ancient Greek literature and art. Natural phenomena (earth, sky, rivers), places (cities, countries), divisions of time (seasons, months, a lifetime), states of the body (health, sleep, death), emotions (love, envy, fear), and political concepts (victory, democracy, war) all appear in human, usually female, form. Some have only fleeting incarnations, others become widely-recognised figures, and others again became so firmly established as deities in the imagination of the community that they received elements of cult associated with the Olympian gods. Though often seen as a feature of the Hellenistic period, personifications can be found in literature, art and cult from the Archaic period onwards; with the development of the art of allegory in the Hellenistic period, they came to acquire more 'intellectual' overtones; the use of allegory as an interpretative tool then enabled personifications to survive the advent of Christianity, to remain familiar figures in the art and literature of Late Antiquity and beyond. The twenty-one papers presented here cover personification in Greek literature, art and religion from its pre-Homeric origins to the Byzantine period. Classical Athens features prominently, but other areas of both mainland Greece and the Greek East are well represented. Issues which come under discussion include: problems of identification and definition; the question of gender; the status of personifications in relation to the gods; the significance of personification as a literary device; the uses and meanings of personification in different visual media; personification as a means of articulating place, time and worldly power. The papers reflect the enormous range of contexts in which personification occurs, indicating the ubiquity of the phenomenon in the ancient Greek world.

Book Synopsis Aristophanes and Women (Routledge Revivals) by : Lauren Taaffe
Download or read book Aristophanes and Women (Routledge Revivals) written by Lauren Taaffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristophanes and Women, first published in 1993, investigates the workings of the great Athenian comedian’s ‘women plays’ in an attempt to discern why they were in fact probably quite funny to their original audiences. It is argued that modern students, scholars, and dramatists need to consider much more closely the conditions of the plays’ ancient productions when evaluating their ostensible themes. Three plays are focused upon: Lysistrata, Thesmophoriazusae, and Ecclesiazusae. All seem to speak quite eloquently to contemporary concerns about women’s rights, the value of women’s work, and the relationships between women and war, literary representation and politics. On the one hand, Professor Taaffe tries to retrieve what an ancient Athenian audience may have l appreciated about these plays and what their central theses may have meant within that culture. On the other hand, Aristophanes is discussed from the perspective of a late twentieth-century, specifically female, reader.
