Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents a comprehensive introduction to the core areas of philosophy of education combined with an up-to-date selection of the central themes. It includes 95 newly commissioned articles that focus on and advance key arguments; each essay incorporates essential background material serving to clarify the history and logic of the relevant topic, examining the status quo of the discipline with respect to the topic, and discussing the possible futures of the field. The book provides a state-of-the-art overview of philosophy of education, covering a range of topics: Voices from the present and the past deals with 36 major figures that philosophers of education rely on; Schools of thought addresses 14 stances including Eastern, Indigenous, and African philosophies of education as well as religiously inspired philosophies of education such as Jewish and Islamic; Revisiting enduring educational debates scrutinizes 25 issues heavily debated in the past and the present, for example care and justice, democracy, and the curriculum; New areas and developments addresses 17 emerging issues that have garnered considerable attention like neuroscience, videogames, and radicalization. The collection is relevant for lecturers teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of education as well as for colleagues in teacher training. Moreover, it helps junior researchers in philosophy of education to situate the problems they are addressing within the wider field of philosophy of education and offers a valuable update for experienced scholars dealing with issues in the sub-discipline. Combined with different conceptions of the purpose of philosophy, it discusses various aspects, using diverse perspectives to do so. Contributing Editors: Section 1: Voices from the Present and the Past: Nuraan Davids Section 2: Schools of Thought: Christiane Thompson and Joris Vlieghe Section 3: Revisiting Enduring Debates: Ann Chinnery, Naomi Hodgson, and Viktor Johansson Section 4: New Areas and Developments: Kai Horsthemke, Dirk Willem Postma, and Claudia Ruitenberg

Book excerpt: Social pedagogy is an innovative discipline that supports children's upbringing and overall development by focusing on the child as a whole person. It has been described as where education and care meet or as 'education in its broadest sense'. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the theory, principles and practice of social pedagogy and the profession of social pedagogue. With chapters from leading international contributors, it outlines the roots of social pedagogy and its development in Europe, and its role in relation to individuals, groups, communities and societies. Also covered is how it applies in practice to working with children and young people in a variety of settings, including children in care and in need of family support, and its potential future applications. This seminal book on an increasingly important topic will be essential reading for all academics, researchers and practitioners working with children.

Book excerpt: Following on from the first two volumes of History of youth work in Europe, each of which was based on international seminars, the Belgian Presidency of the European Union held an international and interdisciplinary conference on the history of youth work. This third volume presents the work of this conference, which widened the scope of study from national histories to questions concerning the historical evolution of youth work methods, theories and targets. The 1st European Conference on the History of Youth Work made a two-pronged contribution: to learn from history and to engage in intercultural exchange and learning. This publication is intended to build bridges between past and future, east and west, north and south - and to inform contemporary debate on youth work and youth policy in Europe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does professional education for future social workers and social pedagogues in one country compare with other countries? What happened in Germany, Denmark and French-speaking Belgium during the years 1989-2004, starting with the year when an EU Directive laid down common rules for the mutual recognition of higher education qualifications? And which lessons may English and British academics, policy-makers, employers and unionists draw from this European material? Are social work and social pedagogy bound to converge as they did in Germany? Or are there Alternatives to Convergence? Did professional education in the countries examined show signs of Europeanisation? These are some of the questions which readers will be able to explore in this book.\pAfter working in the European Commission (Sport Unit) (2001-14) Jacob Kornbeck recently joined the Secretariat of the European Data Protection Supervisor (Policy and Consultation Unit). His part-time research interests cover a range of policy areas, often involving transnational comparisons. Apart from social work and social pedagogy he has written and lectured on various aspects of sports policy, in particular anti-doping and athletes' rights, as well as health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA). Jacob holds degrees from German and British universities. This book is the slightly reworked text of his doctoral thesis (University of London). Following Inspiration from Brussels: the European Union and Sport (published by EHV Academic Press in 2013), this is his second book.\p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gateway text lays the foundations for a thorough knowledge of the theory and methods that social workers need. Pulling together the work of a team of experts, this book uses the innovative “theorizing practice” approach, rather than the traditional “applying theory to practice” approach, thereby providing a much more satisfactory basis for understanding the relationship between theory and practice and making it easier for practitioners to employ theory in practice. Part I sets the scene by examining the relationship between theory and practice, how research can be used to inform practice and the important role of policy and organizational factors. Part II provides 14 chapters, each exploring a different theoretical approach. All in all, this book provides the ideal introduction to using social work theory and methods in practice.

Book excerpt: "It is common to refer to the dynamism and vitality of young people as a source of change, creation, and innovation, but they are often also considered a problem that we do not know how to respond to. Young people can make adults feel uncomfortable because they are neither children who can be told what to do nor adults to be treated as equals. From the perspective of adults, their status is socially and culturally ambiguous"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the intersection between social work and education, social pedagogy is an original and dynamic academic and professional tradition. It can be found across most European countries and shows great variety, being closely connected to specific national - and sometimes even regional cultures and structures. Yet despite this diversity, social pedagogy also has many common features, cross-nationally. The aim of the book is to illustrate this diversity via a selection of case studies from Denmark, France, Germany, Poland and Sweden. Although social pedagogy is, in many countries, a profession that represents a sizeable workforce, very little has been written about it from a European perspective. Comparative literature tends to look at social work, whereby social pedagogy is obscured. But while there is a lack of comparative social pedagogy literature, interest in social pedagogy is growing. This is particularly so in the United Kingdom where no social pedagogy tradition exists but policy developments point to the emergence of a social pedagogy paradigm both in academia and in terms of careers. This book aims to help fill the gap. Case studies deal with theoretical and practical aspects of social pedagogy, professional education, fields of practice and research as well as links with other academic and professional paradigms.
