Book Synopsis Demystifying Bilingualism by : Silke Jansen
Download or read book Demystifying Bilingualism written by Silke Jansen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses changing views on bilingualism in Cognitive Psychology and explores their socio-cultural embeddedness. It offers a new, innovative perspective on the debate on possible cognitive (dis)advantages in bilinguals, arguing that it is biased by popular “language myths”, which often manifest themselves in the form of metaphors. Since its beginnings, Cognitive Psychology has consistently modelled the coexistence between languages in the brain using metaphors of struggle, conflict and competition. However, an ideological shift from nationalist and monolingual ideologies to the celebration of bilingualism under multicultural and neoliberal ideologies in the course of the 20th century fostered opposing interpretations of language coexistence in the brain and its effects on bilinguals at different moments in time. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Cognitive Psychology, Psycholinguistics, Multilingualism and Applied Linguistics, Cognitive and Computational Linguistics, and Critical Metaphor Analysis.
Book Synopsis Unity of Body and Soul or Mind-Brain-Being? by : Marcus Knaup
Download or read book Unity of Body and Soul or Mind-Brain-Being? written by Marcus Knaup and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between our living body and our soul, our mental expressions of life and our physical environment, are both classical topics for discussion and ones which currently present themselves as part of a truly exciting philosophical debate: are we today still able to speak of a “soul”? And what is meant by a (living) body (German: “Leib”)? Does our brain dictate what we will and do? Or do we have free will? Why are we the same people tomorrow that we were yesterday? Given the discoveries of the modern neural sciences, can human beings still be understood in the context of the unity of body and soul? Or should we rather define ourselves as mind-brain beings (German: Gehirn-Geist-Gestalten)? Marcus Knaup explores these questions and discusses the most relevant approaches and arguments concerning the (living) body-soul debate. His own approach to current chal-lenges presented by modern brain research emanates from his bringing together Aristotelian Hylomorphism and phenomenology of the living body (German: “Leibphänomenologie”).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected in this volume highlight the narrative as a phenomenon inherent in human nature. They examine the likely purpose of artistic and literary expression and its contribution to survival in an early human environment. They also consider the developing interest in shaping experience through the narrative, and investigate the consequent significance of traits acquired throughout the ages for the production and reception of texts. In doing so, the book provides a highly diverse overview of the latest research and debates in this innovative field of research.

Download or read book Wilhelm Wundt in History written by Robert W. Rieber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilhelm Wundt is widely recognized as a founder of modern experimental psychology. One of his many contributions was to help establish the Leipzig Institute for Experimental Psychology - the first graduate program in the field - in 1879, the centennial celebration of which resulted in a number of studies including Wilhelm Wundt and the Making of a Scientific Psychology . In an extensive revision of this important book, first published by Plenum in 1980, a distinguished roster of contributors reconsider this much heralded `founding father' of modern psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in relations between knowledge, power, and space has a long tradition in a range of disciplines, but it was reinvigorated in the last two decades through critical engagement with Foucault and Gramsci. This volume focuses on relations between knowledge and power. It shows why space is fundamental in any exercise of power and explains which roles various types of knowledge play in the acquisition, support, and legitimization of power. Topics include the control and manipulation of knowledge through centers of power in historical contexts, the geopolitics of knowledge about world politics, media control in twentieth century, cartography in modern war, the power of words, the changing face of Islamic authority, and the role of Millennialism in the United States. This book offers insights from disciplines such as geography, anthropology, scientific theology, Assyriology, and communication science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoughts from four decades on the subject of artificial beings with consciousness and thus on the question of what humans can find out about themselves beyond metaphysics. It turns out in this matter that the solution to the problem is to implement the problem. The book contains the core theory from 1991 on the construction principles of a "Mr. Data" (the android from the sci-fi series Star Trek: The Next Generation). The theory was the subject of a discussion with Valentin Braitenberg at the Max-Planck-Institute in Tübingen, Germany.

Book Synopsis The History of the Theory of Structures by : Karl-Eugen Kurrer
Download or read book The History of the Theory of Structures written by Karl-Eugen Kurrer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 1248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zehn Jahre nach der 1. Auflage in englischer Sprache legt der Autor sein Buch The History of the Theory of Structures in wesentlich erweiterter Form vor, nunmehr mit dem Untertitel Searching for Equilibrium. Neben den bekannten Persönlichkeiten der Baustatik, wie Coulomb, Culmann, Maxwell, Mohr, Müller-Breslau, Navier, Rankine, Saint-Venant, Timoshenko und Westergaard, wurden u. a. auch G. Green, A. N. Krylov, G. Li, A. J. S. Pippard, W. Prager, H. A. Schade, A. W. Skempton, C. A. Truesdell, J. A. L. Waddell und H. Wagner berücksichtigt.

Book Synopsis Wilhelm Wundt and the Making of a Scientific Psychology by : Robert Rieber
Download or read book Wilhelm Wundt and the Making of a Scientific Psychology written by Robert Rieber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of this book stems largely from the current centennial cele bration of the founding in Leipzig of Wundt's psychological laboratory. Wundt is acknowledged by many as one of the principal founders of experimental psychology. His laboratory, his journal, and his students were all influential in the transmission of the new psychology from Germany to all parts of the world. Nevertheless, until recently, psychol ogists and historians of science hardly recognized the scope and breadth of Wundt's influence, not to mention his contributions.! It was first through E. B. Titchener, and then through Titchener's student, E. G. Boring, that psychology got to know the somewhat biased and distorted picture of this great German psychologist. The picture painted by Titch ener and Boring was unquestionably the way they saw him, and the way they wished to use him as a part of the scientific psychological Zeitgeist of their time.
