Book excerpt: Results indicate that within the intervention class, student academic achievement in remediated skills improved through teaching strategies aimed at increasing emotional well being and the use the individualized computer-based mathematics program. The increase was more substantial when students were given the freedom to control certain aspects of their learning experience. The happier they were in class and the more they believed success was possible, the better they performed. However, this mindset and performance did not carry over into their traditional 8th grade math classes. Students showed no improvement in grades from the start of the year through the end of the year in traditional classes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to develop a mathematics program for use in an eighthgrade general math class which addresses student self-concept in mathematics focused on (a) a less intimidating, non-threatening classroom environment with a profusion of positive student reinforcement, (b) small cooperative student groups where students explore, problem-solve, reason, recognize thinking with logical justifications, (c) student perseverance, (d) effective classroom questioning to draw out student thinking, and (e) logical puzzles and critical thinking math problems. The objective of the project is to assist teachers and administrators in guaranteeing that all eighth-grade students have the opportunity to be successful in mathematics. Four lessons were designed around the California Mathematics and Common Core Standards. The lessons still need to be piloted and feedback from students and teachers would be beneficial to the effectiveness of each lessons implementation in a middle school mathematics classroom. Keywords: Academic achievement, non-threatening environment, self-concept, cognitive demand, classroom discourse, mathematical classroom discourse, math reasoning.

Book excerpt: Math Triumphs is intended for use as a pull out intervention class (RtI level 3) for students who are struggling in mathematics concepts two or more grade levels below their current grade. It is designed for use in after school, before school, summer school, intercession, tutoring, or pull-out/resource rooms. Math Triumphs is the first intervention program designed around the NCTM Focal Points. The Student Editions are 4-color, consumable Student Study Guide worktexts focusing on the foundational skills and concepts leading up to one of the three grade level Focal Points. Each chapter begins with a diagnostic assessment to identify concepts and skills that students may need to review or reinforce before introducing the new chapter.

Book excerpt: The achievement gap in mathematics is a widely known issue that has impacted U.S. schools for years. This gap is especially prevalent for those students who are considered socio-economic disadvantaged as research has shown the majority of students falling behind come from high poverty areas. Numerous barriers have been identified through literature that prohibit this demographic group from succeeding academically. Math intervention has been suggested as a deterrent to this gap and many educators have implemented various models and yet, the achievement gap prevails as socio-economic disadvantaged students continue to fall further behind in developing the foundational knowledge and skills needed to achieve upper level course work. This case study analyzes the practices of three intervention teachers who taught a six-week summer math intervention for 8th grade socio-economic disadvantaged students. Results demonstrated through numerical data in the form of pre/post math intervention assessment, revealed the six-week summer math intervention was successful. A correlation was found through qualitative data, collected in the form of intervention teacher surveys and coded for themes and patterns, which revealed specific practices and strategies practiced amongst all three intervention teachers. These specific strategies and practices used during the six-week intervention improved the mathematic achievement of sixty-three 8th grade student of low socio-economic status. Recommendations include utilizing the outlined strategies and practices during intervention to increase the probability of socio-economic disadvantaged students achieving the mathematical knowledge and skills to succeed at upper level course work. Closing the math achievement gap for low socio-economic status students will not be easy, but with these intervention practices, educators have an opportunity to provide instruction that is catered to the needs of this student population.

Amidst changes in pedagogy, curricula, and standards, what is most important is the belief that students can achieve high levels of math. Mathematical attainment is related to positive math self-efficacy and the use of mathematical practices. This experimental design study aimed to analyze the effects of a six-week intervention on students’ math self-efficacy, practices, and achievement in grades four through six. The following research questions guided the study: RQ1. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math self-efficacy? RQ2. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math practices? RQ3. What effect does the intervention have on students’ math achievement? RQ4. What other student variables moderate the effects of the intervention (i.e., gender, grade level, teacher)? Study results indicated that students in the intervention group reported higher than average gains on the MSE and the SMP than the control group. However, the higher gains on these two measures were not statistically significant. Additionally, the control group’s average increase on the STAR math assessment was higher than the intervention groups but also not statistically significant. These findings provide a practical application for teachers to improve students’ math self-efficacy but suggest additional studies to expand the body of research and the potential benefits of such interventions to math education, teachers, and students alike.

The task resulted from the poor DSTP mathematics test scores gathered from the spring 2002 DSTP assessment. The purpose of this position paper was to formulate a course of action for the new middle school, which would lead to the improvement of DSTP mathematics scores. To do this, I investigated prior academic interventions in mathematics which were designed and implemented at the middle school for eighth grade students in January of 2003. These interventions were examined in relation to their impact on student achievement on DSTP assessment in mathematics scores by eighth grade students in the spring of 2003. The effects of the interventions and the data gathered about the local factors that influenced the DSTP results in general were disappointing. Based on the evidence, new interventions will be outlined to address the problem.

Book excerpt: The Effects of the Elevate Math summer program on math achievement and algebra readiness: This randomized trial examined the effects of the Elevate Math summer program on math achievement and algebra readiness, as well as math interest and self-efficacy, among rising 8th grade students in California's Silicon Valley. The Elevate Math summer math program targets students who score in the range between "high basic" and "low proficient" on state math tests. It consists of 19 days of mathematics instruction, consisting of three hours per day in traditional classroom instruction and one hour per day using Khan Academy (a free online learning system). During summer 2014, students were randomly assigned to a treatment group that received access to the program at the beginning of the summer or to a control group that received access to the program later in the summer. End-of-program test scores and survey responses of students in the treatment group were compared with those of students in the control group prior to their exposure to the program. Treatment group students scored significantly higher than the control group (4 points or 0.7 standard deviation) on a test of algebra readiness. They were also significantly more likely (29 percent versus 12 percent) to reach achievement thresholds associated with success in algebra I. However, treatment and control groups did not show significant differences in terms of math interest or self-efficacy. The results show that the Elevate Math summer program can significantly improve student math achievement and algebra readiness; however, 70 percent of program participants were still not ready for algebra I content. This suggests that summer math programs such as Elevate Math's may be important tools for improving math achievement among rising eighth grade students, but most targeted students will need additional support in order to ensure success in algebra. The following are appended: (1) Data, outcomes, and methodology; and (2) Sensitivity analyses.

Book excerpt: "The implementation of mathematical literacy in an eighth grade Algebra classroom can increase academic achievement as indicated by pre- and post- assessment scores. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of implementing mathematical literacy in an Algebra classroom. This action research study determined the implementation of mathematical literacy may increase student knowledge and conceptual understanding of Algebra concepts and standards. The study used statistical analysis of assessment scores. Teaching strategies were used in this action research project that focused on literacy including explicit vocabulary instruction, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students were exposed to a variety of literacy- centered strategies including collaboration. At the conclusion of the study, the researcher administered the district post- assessment to the students before comparing the results of the assessment to the students' pre- assessment scores. The analysis of the data indicated positive effects through student growth from the pre- to post- assessment scores, indicating mathematical literacy implementation increased student achievement"--Page 6.
