Helen Watanabe-O'Kelly shows how the art patronage of the Electors fits into the intellectual climate of the age and investigates its political and religious context. Book excerpt: It was my friend, Howard Roby, who first talked me into starting my memoirs. It is largely his fault, as well, that I have dwelled upon myself for not just one, but two books that make up this tome that is my life. Because I pledged to myself that I would always keep my eye on the facts and would not be carried away with any "bull", whatsoever. I have kept the famous saying by the tennis player, John McEnroe, in mind throughout: "The older I get, the better I was," Today, in spite of all the ill winds that circulate among businesses, I am in my seventieth year with no financial worries and am relatively healthy to boot. This results from my lifetime habit of hardwork, long hours, and continual challenges as I have made sure that I am providing well for my family. Has it been worth it? What do I have to show for it besides the material comforts? Was my life a success? So finally, I would like to see us play on the same side together, family, friends and world. After all, everyone's a mate!

Book excerpt: Saint-John Perse A version by Derek Mahon These are birds, pure and simple, nothing more, their truth the secret of life itself . . . Derek Mahon s previous translation work includes versions of Jaccottet (Words in the Air, 1998) and Valéry (The Seaside Cemetery, 2001). To these he now adds Birds by Saint-John Perse whose long, discursive, musical texts owe something to Rimbaud s Illuminations but are finally unique. Among twentieth-century poets Perse is remarkable for his oceanic qualities, his global reach and philosophical optimism. Birds is about birds, but also about the artistic vocation itself, Yeats s lonely impulse of delight

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents five documents from the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice: the chapter containing the findings and recommendations relating to the organized crime problems facing the United States and four background papers submitted by outside consultants. The analyses in the Commission report chapter focused on the types and locations of organized crime, the corruption of law enforcement and political systems, the membership and organization of criminal cartels, efforts to control organized crime, and a proposed national strategy against organized crime. Recommendations related to methods of proving criminal violations, investigation and prosecution units, citizens crime commissions, and noncriminal controls such as regulations and media coverage. The four consultants' reports examined the functions and structure of criminal syndicates, corruption of public officials in one jurisdiction, evidence collection in organized crime, and the economic analysis of organized crime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n 1986, to mark the 900th anniversary of the murder of King Cnut IV in the Church of Saint Alban in Odense, the Book of Cnut (Knuds-bogen) was published. The volume shed light on different aspects of the life and cult of Cnut as king and saint. Since then, archaeological excavations in Odense, as well as recent national and international research on the cult of Saint Cnut, have provided scholars with new information about the life and times of Cnut. Furthermore, recent scholarship within medieval studies has resulted in a range of studies which allow for innovative comparisons with the Cnut material. With the interdisciplinary seminar behind the present publication, we brought together both national and international experts. The aim was to bring forth new aspects of Cnut's life and afterlife and to put these in a wider, international context. By doing so, we aimed to lay the basis for future research about Cnut and to form the basis for further dissemination of the latest discoveries pertaining to Cnut and his time.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1500 and 1800, the rapid evolution of postal communication allowed ordinary men and women to scatter letters across Europe like never before. This exchange helped knit together what contemporaries called the ‘respublica litteraria’, a knowledge-based civil society, crucial to that era’s intellectual breakthroughs, formative of many modern values and institutions, and a potential cornerstone of a transnational level of European identity. Ironically, the exchange of letters which created this community also dispersed the documentation required to study it, posing enormous difficulties for historians of the subject ever since. To reassemble that scattered material and chart the history of that imagined community, we need a revolution in digital communications. Between 2014 and 2018, an EU networking grant assembled an interdisciplinary community of over 200 experts from 33 different countries and many different fields for four years of structured discussion. The aim was to envisage transnational digital infrastructure for facilitating the radically multilateral collaboration needed to reassemble this scattered documentation and to support a new generation of scholarly work and public dissemination. The framework emerging from those discussions – potentially applicable also to other forms of intellectual, cultural and economic exchange in other periods and regions – is documented in this book.
