Book excerpt: An experimental study on heat transfer during condensation of refrigerant R-134a in microchannel tubes was conducted. Investigations were carried out on 3 circular and 6 non-circular channels. The non-circular channels included barrel, N-shaped, rectangular, square, and triangular extruded tubes, and a channel with a corrugated insert that yielded triangular microchannels. The hydraulic diameters ranged from 0.424 mm to 1.524 mm. Local heat transfer coefficients over the range of mass fluxes 150

Book excerpt: The construction of an apparatus for the condensation performance testing of a horizontal bundle of four tubes with various refrigerants was completed. The apparatus was instrumented, and data reduction software was developed to provide bundle and single tube condensation data. Two tube bundles were tested, smooth copper tubes and low integral-fin copper-nickel tubes, with two refrigerants, R-114 and R-113. An enhancement ratio of about 2.0 for the overall heat transfer coefficient was demonstrated for the finned tubes over the smooth tubes. Internal contamination, possibly due to a breakdown of the refrigerant molecules when subjected to high temperatures in the boiling chamber, inhibited further meaningful data collection. Recommendations for improvement of the test apparatus are made. Condensation; Heat-transfer coefficient; Finned tubes; Enhancement ratio; Filmwise; Inundation; Tube bundle, Refrigeration systems. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work was to study the condensation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics ofHFC-134a in a micro-fined tube with an 18 degree helix angle and to compare them to those in a smooth tube for various operating conditions. The experimental test facility is designed, developed and is used to determine the condensation HTC and pressure drop in smooth and micro-fin tubes for various HFC refrigerants namely HFC-134a, R-404A, R-407C, R-507A. The experimentation covers wide range of operating parameters such as mass flux and condensing temperatures. The instrumentations used for measurements are calibrated from recognized calibration centres. The hermetically sealed compressor is used for circulating refrigerant; effect of oil present in the refrigerant during condensation is also taken into account. The condensation of HFC-134a and R-404A in smooth and micro-fin tubes are measured and obtained the values of condensation HTCs and pressure drops for different mass flux and condensing temperatures

Book excerpt: The drive to minimize capital investment and improve the energy efficiency of process industry plants has led to a reassessment of the desirability and practicality of incorporating compact heat exchangers (CHEs) and heat transfer enhancement technology into process plants. This volume collects papers presented at the International Conference on Compact Heat Exchangers for the Process Industries, whose objectives were to exploit the existing forms of the CHEs and enhancement technology with their potential use and benefits, to identify new forms of the CHEs and enhancement technology, and to identify and discuss barriers and critical issues preventing the broader use of CHEs and enhancement technology.

Book excerpt: This textbook presents a modern treatment of fundamentals of heat and mass transfer in the context of all types of multiphase flows with possibility of phase-changes among solid, liquid and vapor. It serves equally as a textbook for undergraduate senior and graduate students in a wide variety of engineering disciplines including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, material science and engineering, nuclear engineering, biomedical engineering, and environmental engineering. Multiphase Heat Transfer and Flow can also be used to teach contemporary and novel applications of heat and mass transfer. Concepts are reinforced with numerous examples and end-of-chapter problems. A solutions manual and PowerPoint presentation are available to instructors. While the book is designed for students, it is also very useful for practicing engineers working in technical areas related to both macro- and micro-scale systems that emphasize multiphase, multicomponent, and non-conventional geometries with coupled heat and mass transfer and phase change, with the possibility of full numerical simulation.

Book excerpt: The Multiphase Flow Handbook, Second Edition is a thoroughly updated and reorganized revision of the late Clayton Crowe’s work, and provides a detailed look at the basic concepts and the wide range of applications in this important area of thermal/fluids engineering. Revised by the new editors, Efstathios E. (Stathis) Michaelides and John D. Schwarzkopf, the new Second Edition begins with two chapters covering fundamental concepts and methods that pertain to all the types and applications of multiphase flow. The remaining chapters cover the applications and engineering systems that are relevant to all the types of multiphase flow and heat transfer. The twenty-one chapters and several sections of the book include the basic science as well as the contemporary engineering and technological applications of multiphase flow in a comprehensive way that is easy to follow and be understood. The editors created a common set of nomenclature that is used throughout the book, allowing readers to easily compare fundamental theory with currently developing concepts and applications. With contributed chapters from sixty-two leading experts around the world, the Multiphase Flow Handbook, Second Edition is an essential reference for all researchers, academics and engineers working with complex thermal and fluid systems.

Book excerpt: The past thirty years have witnessed a growing worldwide desire that po- tive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degr- ing effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been id- tified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it ava- able? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers f- mulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of en- ronmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establi- ment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.
