Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt and Scythia Herodotus was born in the year 484 before Christ, at Halicarnassus. Halicarnassus was a Greek city founded upon rock, commanding a harbour on the coast of Asia Minor. It was on the north side of what is now a gulf, known, from the modern name of Halicarnassus, as the Gulf of Boudroun. The city had been founded by a colony of Dorians from Argolis. Herodotus belonged to a chief family in the town. His father was named Lyxes, and his mother Dryo. One of his uncles, Panyasis, was an epic poet. The birth date of Herodotus was six years after the battle of Marathon, and four years before the battles of Thermopylae and Salamis. To tell the history of the war between the Greeks and Persians became the ambition of his life, and he went upon far travels in search of information. When Herodotus was born, Artemisia, daughter of a Lygdamis, ruled over Halicarnassus, Cos, Nisyrus, and Calydna, in the interest of Xerxes, whom she joined as a volunteer with five ships at the battle of Salamis.
