Book excerpt: EGILL SKALLAGRIMSSON (ca. 910AD - ca. 990AD) was a Viking Age poet, warrior and farmer and the protagonist of Egil's Saga. Born in Iceland, the son of Skalla-Grimr Kveldulfsson, a respected chieftan, and Bera Yngvarsdottir. Egill composed his first poem aged three years and exhibited berserk behaviour (a bloody theme which continues throughout the saga), and this, together with the description of his large and unattractive head, has led to the theory that he might have suffered from Paget's disease. This is corroborated by an archaeological find of a head from the Viking era which is thought to be Egill's. At the age of seven, Egill was cheated in a game with local boys. Enraged, he procured an axe, and returning to the boys, split the skull of the boy who cheated him. Later in life, after being grievously insulted, Egill killed Baror of Atley, a retainer of King Eirik Bloodaxe and kinsman of Queen Gunnhildr, both of whom spent the remainder of their lives trying to take vengeance. Seething with hatred, Gunnhildr ordered her two brothers to assassinate Egill and his brother orolfr. However, Egill slew the Queen's brothers when they attempted to confront him. Declared an outlaw by Eirik Bloodaxe, Berg-Onundr gathered a company of men to capture Egill, but was killed in his attempt to do so. Before escaping from Norway, Egill also slew Rognvaldr, the son of King Eirik and Queen Gunnhildr. He then cursed the King and Queen, setting a horse's head on a Nithing pole. He later fought at the Battle of Brunanburh in the service of King Athelstan. Ultimately, Egill returned to his family farm in Iceland, where he remained a power to be reckoned with in local politics. He lived into his eighties and, blind, died shortly before Iceland converted to Catholicism. Before Egill died he buried his silver treasure near Mosfellsbaer. In his last act of violence he murdered the servant who helped him bury his treasure

NOTE: Even though Christianity took sway in Scandinavia around the time the saga is set, it is not suggested that Norsemen led wholly pious lives, filled with spiritual observances. Egil Skallagrímsson's poem Sonatorrek (Ch. 81), composed on the death of two of his sons, goes some way to clarifying the relationship between the pagan Norseman and the old Norse gods better, perhaps, than any other surviving Norse or Icelandic literature. As a poet and a warrior, Egil believed in Odin's gifts above most other deities. Egill remains a very popular figure in Iceland, with a beer brewery, TV show, songs and an annual S.C.A. We focus on two known poems that describe the events in detail; that is the Brunanburh poem and the poems in Egil's saga as well as other known sources for this battle. The poems in Egil's saga are contemporary with the events, even though the saga was written in the 13th century, the poems are older and are thought to be the work of Egill Skallagrímsson himself. We also use other references that conform to elements in other known sources like the issue of silver in this time. We conclude from all these sources that the Battle might have been fought in Hunwick in County Durham. We revive the poems in Egil's saga, the Brunanburh poem and the relation these poems have with the old Icelandic poem Völuspá and we conclude that the Brunanburh poem is much related to these Old Icelandic poems and Egill Skallagrímsson might have been the poet of the Brunanburh poem.

Poole's editorial and critical analysis reveals much about the texts themselves, the events that they describe, and the culture from which they come. Poole attempts to put right many misunderstandings about the integrity of the texts and their narrative techniques. From a historical perspective, he weighs the poems' authenticity as contemporary documents which provide evidence bearing upon the reconstruction of Viking Age battles, peace negotiations, and other events. He traces the social roles played by violence in medieval Scandinavian society, and explores the many functions of the poet within that society. Arguing that these texts exhibit a mind-style so vastly different from our own present 'individualism, ' Poole suggests that the mind-set of the medieval Scandinavian could be termed 'non-individualist.' The poems discussed are the 'Darradarljód, ' where the speakers are Valkyries; 'Lidsmannaflokkr, ' a rank-and-file warrior's description of Canute the Great's siege of London in 1016; 'Torf-Einarr's Revenge'; 'Egil's Duel with Ljótr, ' five verses from the classic Egils saga Skallagrimssonar; 'A Battle on the Health, ' marking the culmination of a famous feud described in a very early Icelandic saga, the Heidarviga saga; and two extracts from the poem Sexstefia, one describing Haraldr of Norway's great fleet and victory over Sveinn of Denmark, and the other the peace settlement between these two kinds. The texts are presented in association with translations and commentaries as a resource not merely for medieval Scandinavian studies but also for the increasingly interwoven specialisms of literary theory and anthropology.
