Book Synopsis Futures Markets (Routledge Revivals) by : Barry Goss
Download or read book Futures Markets (Routledge Revivals) written by Barry Goss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this book discusses many important aspects of the theory and practice of Futures Markets. It describes how they, at the time, grew to be an increasingly important feature of the world's major financial centres. Indeed, they adopted the role of being efficient forward pricing mechanisms and this was reflected by the interest of economists in the study of risk, uncertainty and information. Here, the contributors focus on areas that were of concern in the late 1980s such as feasibility, forward pricing and returns, and the modelling of price determination in Futures Markets. Evidence is drawn from twenty-five different commodities representing all the major commodity groups; and from all the world's major centres of Futures Trading.
Book Synopsis Efficiency in Commodity Futures Markets by : Graciela Kaminsky
Download or read book Efficiency in Commodity Futures Markets written by Graciela Kaminsky and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper undertakes an econometric investigation into the efficiency of commodity futures markets. Despite a considerable amount of empirical literature, there is no general consensus on whether or not the markets are efficient. The results of this study suggest that for certain commodities expected excess returns to futures speculation are non-zero, however, it is argued that these results do not necessarily imply that markets are inefficient, or that agents do not act rationally. The implications of the study for the cost of using the futures markets for hedging, and for the power of futures prices to forecast future spot prices, are also noted.

Download or read book Performativity and Politics: The Making of Commodity Futures Markets written by Matthias Baumgarten and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,0 / 85%, University of Warwick (Politics and International Studies), course: International Political Economy (Dissertation), language: English, abstract: In this work I analyze commodity futures markets (CFMs) in order to shed light on the debated relationship between neoclassical economic theory and real-world markets. I show that CFMs clearly reflect a number of neoclassical aspects, but its asocial assumptions mean that the theory fails to explain how these came to be realized. Performativity theory, despite itself neglecting the ‘political’ factors of agency, power and distribution to a certain extent, proves to be a suitable alternative explanatory approach. Its idea of economic theory as a ‘blueprint’ can be recognized in conscious steps during the formation of CFMs, which increased the fit of these markets to the neoclassical ideal. Agency and power played a substantial role in shaping performative processes, which led to an approximation of market equilibrium and corresponding positive distributional effects. These outcomes proved to be instable, however, as the entry of big investors in the wake of the current ‘financialization’ of CFMs had disequilibrating consequences. The resulting instances of counterperformativity shifted the markets away from neoclassical theory and led to adverse distributional impacts.
Book Synopsis The Economics, Law, and Public Policy of Market Power Manipulation by : S. Craig Pirrong
Download or read book The Economics, Law, and Public Policy of Market Power Manipulation written by S. Craig Pirrong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deterrence of market manipulation is central to the entire regulatory and legal framework governing the operation of American commodity futures markets. However, despite all of the regulatory, scholarly, and legal scrutiny of market manipulation, the subject is widely misunderstood. Federal commodity and securities laws prohibit manipulation, but do not define it. Scholarly research has failed to analyze adequately the causes or effects of manipulation, and the relevant judicial decisions are confused, confusing, and contradictory. The aim of this book is to illuminate the process of market manipulation by presenting a rigorous economic analysis of this phenomenon, including the conditions that facilitate it and its effects on market users and others. The conclusions of this analysis are used to examine critically some legal and regulatory anti-manipulation policies. The Economics, Law and Public Policy of Market Power Manipulation concludes with a set of robust and realistic tests that regulators and jurists can apply to detect and deter manipulation.

Book Synopsis Do Commodity Futures Help Forecast Spot Prices? by : Mr.David A Reichsfeld
Download or read book Do Commodity Futures Help Forecast Spot Prices? written by Mr.David A Reichsfeld and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We assess the spot price forecasting performance of 10 commodity futures at various horizons up to two years and test whether this performance is affected by market conditions. We reject efficient markets based on in-sample tests but, out-of-sample, we find that the forecast from the futures market is hard to beat. We find that the forecasting performance of futures does not depend on the slope of the futures curve, in contrast to the predictions of well-known models of commodity markets. We also find futures' forecasting performance to be invariant to whether prices are in an upswing or downswing, casting doubt on aspersions that uninformed investors participating during bull markets impede the price discovery process.
Book Synopsis Nonparametric Tests of Commodity Futures Market Efficiency by : Andrew M. McKenzie
Download or read book Nonparametric Tests of Commodity Futures Market Efficiency written by Andrew M. McKenzie and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commodity futures markets carry out two important marketing functions with respect to agricultural products: (1) a price discovery role and (2) a price risk management role. The relative effectiveness with which futures markets fulfill these two roles is dependent on the efficiency of the futures market and its ability to provide unbiased forecasts of subsequent futures prices at contract maturity. Our results indicate that futures price returns for live cattle, hogs, corn, rice and soybean meal violate the standard OLS assumption of normality. However, nonparametric statistics results did not materially conflict with our OLS parametric results. Further modeling indicated live cattle, hogs and soybean meal futures returns are better specified using GARCH type models, which allow for a non-constant error variance over time.
