Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Zinc naphthenate (ZnN) has been widely used for dip treatment of Department of Defense wood packing materials but is no longer available. Research was conducted to evaluate the preservative efficacy and corrosiveness of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered alternatives to ZnN. Efficacy of "green" preservatives (defined here as not containing pesticides that require EPA registration) was also evaluated. Most of the EPA-registered preservatives evaluated provided decay and termite protection similar to or greater than that of ZnN. Four of the formulations provided protection equivalent to or greater than that of ZnN against termites and all decay fungi evaluated. The registered formulations tended to be more effective than ZnN in preventing termite feeding on Southern Pine, but some were less effective than ZnN in protecting yellow-poplar from termites. However, the "green" preservatives were not effective in preventing decay or termite attack. Corrosion testing revealed that all but one of the registered formulations were more corrosive than ZnN. The results of the laboratory fungal, termite, and corrosion testing were used to develop a protection index with recommended applications for the formulations evaluated."

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United States Department of Defense munitions wood packaging materials (WPMs) are currently dip-treated with preservatives to protect the wood against decay fungi and termites. However, recent observations of mold on WPMs prompted research to evaluate the effectiveness of adding moldicides to the wood preservatives that are typically used on WPMs. Controlling moisture is the most effective way to prevent mold growth, but this is not always possible during WPM handling and storage. For this study, moldicides were selected based on compatibility with existing wood preservatives, commercial availability, and current regulatory labeling. Three types of specimens (softwood, hardwood, and plywood) were dip-treated in test formulations, subjected to simulated rainfall, inoculated with mold spores, incubated, and evaluated for extent of mold growth. The most effective wood preservative–moldicide combinations were evaluated for corrosivity using standardized methods, which involved dipping wires attached to wood specimens in the test solution and then storing them in plastic bags to maintain high humidity levels. The benefit of moldicidal additives varied greatly with wood preservative and type of wood substrate. Mold growth on hickory was particularly difficult to prevent. Overall, moldicides significantly improved mold resistance for all wood preservatives except copper-8-quinolinolate (Cu8), which exhibited substantial mold resistance without moldicidal amendment. Didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DDAC-Cl) or carbonate (DDAC-Carbo) was found to be beneficial for several wood preservatives, and combinations of chlorothalonil (CTL), isothiazolone (OIT), or 3-iodo-2-propynyl butyl carbamate/propiconazole (IPBC/PPZ) also improved mold resistance for some preservatives. Suggested wood preservative–moldicide combinations and concentrations are provided in this report.
