Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children and adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) have difficulties in executive functioning and when coping with everyday planning tasks. However, the literature cannot explain whether individuals with ID perform according to their developmental level or not. The studies in this thesis investigated if life experience could be a contributing factor to the diversity seen in the literature. Planning performance can be improved by either using external or internal support. Assistive technology for cognition (ATC) is an example of external support. This thesis investigated how the ATC is being used in an everyday planning situation which has not been investigated before. Furthermore, this thesis explored whether the internal supports of cognitive abilities and life experience correlate with planning ability in adolescents with ID, and if planning ability can be trained using a cognitive training program for everyday planning. Results showed that ATC supported cognitive functions, but that the children did not formulate the plans themselves. Furthermore, the results support the difference model of ID since planning correlated with different cognitive measures and life experience in adolescents with ID compared to children with a typical development. Adolescents with ID got better at the planning tasks in the training program, however, no transfer effects to untrained planning tasks were found. To conclude, the planning was supported by external and internal support. However, ATC needs to be designed and prescribed in a way that increases independence. Practitioners should actively support in training planning and should be cautious when introducing cognitive interventions if the transfer gap is too large. Barn och ungdomar med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning (IF) har svårt med sina exekutiva funktioner och dagliga planeringsuppgifter. Litteraturen kan dock inte förklara om individer med IF presterar enligt deras utvecklingsnivå eller inte. Studierna i denna avhandling undersökte om livserfarenhet kan vara en bidragande faktor till varför denna skillnad ses i litteraturen. Planeringsförmågan kan förbättras genom att använda externt eller internt stöd. Hjälpteknik för kognition (HM-K) är ett exempel på externt stöd. Denna avhandling undersökte hur HM-K används i en vardaglig planeringssituation vilket inte har undersökts tidigare. Vidare undersökte denna avhandling om de interna stöden för kognitiva förmågor och livserfarenhet korrelerar med planeringsförmåga hos ungdomar med IF, och om planeringsförmåga kan förbättras med hjälp av ett kognitivt träningsprogram för vardagsplanering. Resultaten visade att HM-K stödde kognitiva funktioner, men att barnen inte formulerade planerna själva. Vidare stöder resultaten skillnadsmodellen för IF eftersom planering korrelerade med olika kognitiva mått och livserfarenhet hos ungdomar med IF jämfört med barn med en typisk utveckling. Ungdomar med IF blev bättre på planeringsuppgifterna i träningsprogrammet, men inga överföringseffekter till otränade planeringsuppgifter hittades. Avslutningsvis så stöds planeringen av externa och interna stöd. HM-K måste dock utformas och förskrivas på ett sätt som ökar självständighet. Praktiker bör aktivt stödja träning av planering och bör vara försiktiga när de inför kognitiva insatser om överföringsgapet är för stort.

We can mentally represent the visual form of objects. We can extract information from several of the senses as to the location of objects in relation to ourselves and to other objects nearby. For some of those objects we can reach out and manipulate them. We can also imagine ourselves manipulating objects in advance of doing so, or even when it would be impossible to do so physically. The problem posed to science is how these cognitive operations are accomplished, and proffered accounts lie in two essentially parallel research endeavours, working memory and imagery. Working memory is thought to pervade everyday cognition, to provide on-line processing and temporary storage, and to update, moment to moment, our representation of the current state of our environment and our interactions with that environment. There is now a strong case for the claims of working memory in the area of phonological and articulatory functions, all of which appear to contribute to everyday activities such as counting, arithmetic, vocabulary acquisition, and some aspects of reading and language comprehension. The claims for visual and spatial working memory functions are less convincing. Most notable has been the assumption that visual and spatial working memory are intimately involved in the generation, retention and manipulations of visual images. There has until recently been little hard evidence to justify that assumption, and the research on visual and spatial working memory has focused on a relatively restricted range of imagery tasks and phenomena. In a more or less independent development, the literature on visual imagery has now amassed a voluminous corpus of data and theory about a wide range of imagery phenomena. Despite this, few books on imagery refer to the concept of working memory in any detail, or specify the nature of the working memory system that might be involved in mental imagery. This essay follows a line of reconciliation and positive critiquing in exploring the possible overlap between mental imagery and working memory. Theoretical development in the book draws on data from both cognitive psychology and cognitive neuropsychology. The aim is to stimulate debate, to address directly a number of assumptions that hitherto have been implicit, and to assess the contribution of the concept of working memory to our understanding of these intriguing core aspects of human cognition.

The characteristics of children PIMD are described in this book. The importance of alertness in assessment, both as a mean and as an objective, is then explained. The implications of such a complex pattern of disabilities for assessment of alertness is considered as well. In this book, the authors also examine the effects of age and knowledge of memory ageing on subjective appraisals of memory in forgetful others using a person perception paradigm. The social/communication features that differentiate intellectual disabilities of three different aetiologies: Low Functioning Autism, Down Syndrome and Idiopathic Intellectual Disability are explored as well. Other chapters review evidence about laboratory-based and environment-based research on spatial memory, the influence of music on various forms of memory, and evidence from literature that working memory is a major component of successful performance on an IQ test. Impairment is discussed in working memory in ID, which could also affect problem solving abilities on a non-verbally based measure, such as the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM).

Book excerpt: L'objectif de cette thèse est de préciser l'effet des émotions sur trois systèmes de mémoire (mémoire épisodique, sémantique et perceptive) dans le fonctionnement normal (sujets jeunes et âgés). De nombreuses études ont montré que les émotions ont un effet bénéfique sur la mémoire épisodique mais les autres systèmes ont été peu explorés ; de plus ces résultats ont été observés chez les sujets jeunes mais ils sont moins clairs chez les sujets âgés. Notre première étude menée chez des sujets jeunes a montré que l'effet des émotions de faible intensité (visages émotionnels) sur la mémoire est peu marqué : seules les émotions négatives ont un effet bénéfique sur la mémoire épisodique et la mémoire perceptive, les émotions positives ayant au contraire un effet perturbateur sur la mémoire épisodique. Concernant le vieillissement et ses effets sur la mémoire, nous avons montré que des modifications de l'activité cérébrale peuvent survenir dès 50 ans, bien avant les premières modifications comportementales. De plus, l'analyse des potentiels évoqués a montré que tous les processus mnésiques ne sont pas sensibles à l'âge de la même manière. Enfin, nous avons montré dans une troisième étude que l'effet des émotions s'inverse en partie avec l'âge : les performances en mémoire sémantique sont améliorées par les émotions positives alors que les performances en mémoire épisodique déclinent davantage pour les visages négatifs, l'effet restant inchangé pour la mémoire perceptive. L'ensemble de ces résultats suggère que l'effet des émotions pourrait être distinct selon le système de mémoire et que cet effet évolue avec l'âge pour la mémoire épisodique et la mémoire sémantique.
