Book excerpt: Ce mémoire présente l'étude d'un matériau composite de résine de cyanate ester et de fibres de carbone fait de plis tissés de type cinq harnais soumis à des cycles de température. Trois stratifiés et une plaque sandwich ont été étudiés. L'étude de l'endommagement pour les stratifiés a montré deux types d'endommagement, des microfissures et des décohésions. Les décohésions sont présentes strictement sur les tranches externes. Quant aux microfissures, elles sont observées en plus grande quantité sur la tranche externe que sur la tranche interne. L'endommagement dans la plaque sandwich est présent sous deux formes : des microfissures et de la délamination due à la présence de l'adhésif. La dégradation des propriétés mécaniques des stratifiés en fonction du nombre de cycles thermiques a aussi été étudiée. Les essais mécaniques ont montré que ce sont les propriétés influencées par le comportement de la matrice qui sont affectées par la présence des microfissures.

This meeting has two purposes: the first obvious one because we have collected scientists from East, far East and west to discuss new development in the field of fracture mechanics: the notch fracture mechanics. The second is less obvious but perhaps in longer term more important that is the building of bridges between scientists in the frame of a network called Without Walls Institute on Notch Effects in Fatigue and Fracture". Physical perception of notch effects is not so easy to understand as the presence of a geometrical discontinuity as a worst effect than the simple reduction of cross section. Notch effects in fatigue and fracture is characterised by the following fundamental fact: it is not the maximum local stress or stress which governs the phenomena of fatigue and fracture. The physic shows that a process volume is needed probably to store the necessary energy for starting and propagating the phenomenon. This is a rupture of the traditional "strength of material" school which always give the prior importance of the local maximum stress. This concept of process volume was strongly affirmed during this workshop.

These materials may suffer degradation in which ion addition and/or ion exchange reactions occur, leading to a breakdown of the matrix microstructure and consequent weakening. Sometimes this degradation can be extremely rapid and serious such as in acidic environments, while in other cases degradation occurs over long periods. Consequences of material failure are usually severe – adversely affecting the health and well-being of human communities and disturbing ecological balances. There are also large direct costs of maintaining and replacing deteriorated infrastructure and indirect costs from loss of production during maintenance work, which place a great burden on society. It was aimed to provide a unified approach in order to understand both inelastic material and structural response under variable loading conditions. The attempt to extend the classical shakedown theory of Melan and Koiter to geometrically non-linear problems is presented in several papers. The industrial application of cyclic plasticity to the analysis and the design of pressure bellows, compensators, turbine disks, or flange connections under thermal and pressure cycles illustrates the great potential of the numerical techniques developed for this purpose using mostly min-max approaches. The treatment of railway problems and the analysis and optimisation of pavements are further examples of important areas of applications. Emphasis was laid on approaches that take into account the fact that loading histories are often not precisely known Therefore, the center of interest lies in other than step by step calculation methods.

Accordingly, we organized a Joint U. S. -Italy Symposium on Composite Materials in Italy which was successfully held on June 15-19, 1981, under the primary sponsorship of NSF in the U. S. A. and CNR in Italy. The strong support we also received from industrial co-sponsors, both from Italy and the U. S. A. , as well as our respective academic insti tutions gave us confidence that we were addressing a timely and important area in Science and Engineering with a unique concept.
