Book excerpt: Certains travaux de la littérature suggèrent que l'âge aurait un effet sur l'expression clinique de la maladie d'Alzheimer (MA). En particulier, la mémoire autobiographique, dans ses aspects rétrogrades et antérogrades, pourrait être relativement préservée chez les sujets jeunes (ou« préséniles ») en comparaison avec les sujets plus âgés.Dans ce travail, nous avons évalué les effets de l'âge sur la mémoire autobiographique et spatiale dans la MA. Dix-neuf sujets MA, répartis en trois groupes selon l'âge de début des troubles (avant 65 ans, entre 65 et 75 ans, et au-delà de 75 ans), et 27 sujets contrôles ont été soumis à un protocole mesurant : i) la mémoire autobiographique dans ses composantes sémantique et épisodique à travers quatre périodes de vie, à l'aide d'un questionnaire semistructuré et d'une épreuve de fluence ; ii) la mémoire spatiale, à l'aide d'une épreuve reposant sur l'apprentissage d'un parcours numérisé représentant un trajet en voiture. Le rappel du parcours a été proposé à deux reprises, une heure après l'apprentissage et huit jours après. Les résultats de notre étude sont en accord avec les données de la littérature. Les patients présentent une altération de la mémoire autobiographique quelle que soit la période de vie testée, selon un gradient temporel obéissant à la loi de Ribot. Cependant, les effets de l'âge sont globalement modestes, les sujets les plus jeunes présentant un déficit plus marqué sur la composante sémantique de la première période de vie. Par ailleurs, la mémoire spatiale est très déficitaire, apparaissant dès la phase d'encodage du parcours. Aucune différence sur les performances en mémoire spatiale entre les trois groupes de patients n'a été observée. En conclusion, ce travail ne permet de pas de soutenir l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'âge influe sur la mémoire autobiographique et spatiale dans la MA. En revanche, il confirme l'atteinte sévère de ces systèmes mnésiques, dès les stades légers de cette affection.

Theoretical models, review articles, edited vol umes, and empirical work devoted to these constructs are proliferating at a dizzying rate. This clearly attests to the renascent interest in these topics, the vitality of these research paradigms, and the promise that these constructs hold for explaining fundamental aspects of human development and behavior. Although the renewed academic interest in self, ego, and identity is obviously an exciting and healthy development, there is always the tenden cy for research to take on a parochial character. When boundaries are erected among different theoretical perspectives, when empirical findings are viewed in isolation, when theories are too sharply delimited and segre gated from other domains of behavior, then what may seem like progres sive, healthy, and content-increasing tendencies in a research paradigm may turn out to be, on closer inspection, merely an inchoate thrashing about. Fortunately there is an internal dynamic to scientific investigation that tends to combat this degenerating tendency. There is something about the rhythm of science that bids us to transcend parochial theoretical in terests and seek the most general theory.
