Johnston and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bulk of the paper deals with a comparison of the flexural performance of 102-mm (4-in.)-square standard molded specimens with corresponding specimens of the same size produced either by sawing the bottom (tension) surface of a 102 by 152-mm (4 by 6-in.) cross section or by sawing the bottom and sides of a 152 by 152 mm (6 by 6-in.) cross section. The performance of plain concrete is discussed in terms of its flexural strength under third-point loading [ASTM Test Method for Flexural Strength of Concrete (Using Simple Beam with Third-Point Loading) (C 78)]. The conclusion is that sawing need not adversely affect the measured strength when done carefully with proper equipment. The performance of fiber-reinforced concrete is discussed in terms of changes in first-crack strength and toughness parameters defined according to ASTM Test Method for Flexural Toughness and First-Crack Strength of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (Using Beam with Third Point Loading) (C 1018). The majority of the results deal with changes in those parameters that are associated with differences in fiber alignment between the molded and sawed specimens. The results of two other small studies involving differences in fiber alignment are also included. In the first, alignment is varied by inserting steel plates in the freshly mixed concrete during consolidation, and in the second by using the same length of fiber in 102-mm (4-in.) and 152-mm (6-in.) cross sections. The conclusion is that preferential fiber alignment by the mold surfaces can increase first-crack strength and toughness indices. To avoid undue influence of fiber alignment in small specimens on flexural test data determined in accordance with Method C 1018, the ratio of minimum specimen cross section to fiber length should not be less than 3.0, except perhaps when strict compliance with this criterion means using specimens larger than 152 mm (6 in.) square.

Book excerpt: "In the research project presented in this PhD-thesis, an innovative type of fibre concrete is developed, with improved both the tensile strength and the ductility: the Hybrid-Fibre Concrete (HFC). The expression "Hybrid" refers to the "hybridisation" of fibres: short and long steel fibres were combined together in one concrete mixture. This is opposite to conventional steel fibre concretes, which contain only one type of fibre. The basic goal of combining short and long fibres is from one side to improve the tensile strength by the action of short fibres, and from the other side to improve the ductility by the action of long fibres." "In this research project, all important aspects needed for the development and application of Hybrid-Fibre Concrete have been considered. In total 15 mixtures, with different types and amounts of steel fibres were developed and tested in the fresh state (workability) as well as in the hardened state (uniaxial tensile tests, flexural tests, pullout tests of single fibres and compressive tests). A new analytical model for bridging of cracks by fibres was developed and successfully implemented for tensile softening response of HFC. At the end, the utilisation of HFC in the engineering practice was discussed, including a case-study on light prestressed long-span beams made of HFC."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The addition of discontinuous discrete fibres to concrete has repeatedly been shown as an effective method to overcome the inherently brittle nature of concrete. The resulting composite has enhanced toughness and impact resistance and is broadly referred to as Fibre-Reinforced Concrete (FRC). Although the benefits of implementing FRC are evident, the high variability associated with FRC has frequently been cited as a characteristic stunting vast structural application of the material. This research is focussed on the spatial distribution of fibres and the way it affects flexural performance. A thorough understanding of the influence of fibre spatial distribution on composite performance is the first step in incorporating fibre distribution into material and structural design procedures and aids the pursuit of effective and optimal implementation of FRC in practice. The study was aimed at not only investigating the influence of fibre distribution on flexural performance but also evaluating the effect of fibre length and volume content on the fibre spatial characteristics. The experimental framework considered two hook-ended steel fibres with different lengths incorporated into a 50 MPa concrete mixture at volume contents ranging from 40 kg/m3 to 120 kg/m3. Flexural response was obtained using three-point bending tests on notched specimen, after which each specimen was cut adjacent to the crack plane and prepared for image analysis. An image processing algorithm was developed to automatically extract the fibre locations that were used to describe the fibre spatial characteristics. Spatial distribution was explored by evaluating the uniformity of fibres across a section, the inter-batch variability of fibre distribution, and the degree of clustering. A geometric descriptor of fibre spacing was defined using Voronoi diagrams generated from image data and employed in a unique approach developed for quantifying fibre spatial characteristics. An alternative approach was developed and used to compare the spatial metrics resulting from the Voronoi approach. The findings of the study highlight the role of fibre length and content on the spatial distribution of fibres and it is revealed that the sectional uniformity, inter-batch spatial variability, and degree of clustering are dependent on the number of fibres in the cross section. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the substantial influence of fibre distribution on the flexural performance of FRC. It is concluded that the variability in flexural strength reduces as the variation in fibre spatial distribution reduces and that extensive clustering has an adverse effect on the effective resistance provided by fibres.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of fracture mechanics in resolving problems in the design of concrete structures is becoming more widely accepted and utilized as current codes cannot always be applied satisfactorily to design conditions. There is wide-ranging technical literature available on the subject but to date there is no readily accessible and systematic source to meet the needs of present practitioners and future designers. Fracture Mechanics and Structural Concrete addresses this need. The book provides a simple and straightforward study of fracture mechanics relating to concrete design and promotes its usage by highlighting the shortcomings of current design codes. It explains how fracture mechanics can overcome certain design problems, such as minimum reinforcement, punching shear failure and the influence of structural size upon shear capacity. Professional engineers, researchers and academics will find Fracture Mechanics and Structural Concrete an essential introduction to the subject. It will also be useful to postgraduate and final-year undergraduate students of civil engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of specimen size on measured flexural toughness of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) remains largely unknown. Towards this end, an experimental program was carried out where flexural toughness tests were performed on specimens of two different sizes using ASTM C1609/C1609M-07 test procedure. Two specimen sizes of 100x100x350 mm3 and 150x150x500 mm3 were tested. A hybrid polymeric fiber at three fiber dosage rates of 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 kg/m3 was investigated. Results indicate that the specimen size affects not only the toughness properties but also the variability in data as quantified by the coefficient of variation (COV). Size effect was more pronounced in the early part of the load-deflection curve and decreased with an increase in the fiber volume fraction. At a given fiber volume fraction, the COV, moduli of rupture, and post-crack residual strengths were all higher for the specimens of smaller size. Finally, the small size specimens showed a greater deflection hardening than the large size specimens. The last conclusion is significant in that deflection hardening is now often cited as the required performance characteristic of high performance FRC, and this property may depend more on the size of the specimens than on the composite itself.
