Experimental results show that free-stream disturbances dominate the transition process as determined by the experimentally measured transition Reynolds numbers on simple geometries (flat plates and sharp cones). Principal modes of disturbance are turbulence (u(tilde)/U infinity) and acoustic sound (p(tilde)/q infinity) at subsonic speeds; hole/slot acoustic resonance at transonic speeds (p(tilde)/q infinity); and tunnel wall turbulent-boundary layer radiated noise at supersonic-hypersonic speeds (p(tilde)/q infinity). Data correlations and resulting empirical equations that show the direct relationship between transition Reynolds numbers and free-stream disturbance levels are presented and discussed.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of radiated aerodynamic-noise on boundary-layer transition in supersonic-hypersonic wind tunnels. It is conclusively shown that the aerodynamic noise (pressure fluctuations associated with sound waves), which radiate from the tunnel wall, turbulent boundary layer, will dominate the transition process on sharp flat places and sharp slender cones at zero incidence.

Book excerpt: Boundary-layer transition location measurements were made on a 10-deg sharp cone in 23 wind tunnels in the United States and Europe and in flight. The data were acquired at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic Mach numbers over a range of unit Reynolds numbers in an effort to obtain an improved understanding of the effect of wind tunnel flow quality on transition location. The data indicate that the transition mechanism in both wind tunnels and flight is associated with the formation of Tollmien-Schlichting waves in the laminar boundary layer. However, the location of the end of transition was found to be primarily a function of the noise under the laminar boundary of the cone surface and, within + or - 20 percent, independent of Mach number and unit Reynolds number. Book excerpt: Boundary-layer transition and aerodynamic noise measurements were made on sharp leading-edge two-dimensional models in supersonic wind tunnels (1 ft to 16 ft). These data showed, conclusively, a significant and continuous increase in transition Reynolds number and a significant decrease in radiated aerodynamic noise (generated by the tunnel wall turbulent boundary layer) with increasing tunnel size. Results obtained in the AEDC-VKF Tunnel A from a shroud configuration placed concentrically around a hollow cylinder transition model and a flat plate microphone model further demonstrated the strong adverse effects that radiated aerodynamic noise will have on transition. A correlation of transition Reynolds numbers based on transition data from nine wind tunnels (3

Book excerpt: One of the primary reasons for developing quiet tunnels is for the investigation of high-speed boundary-layer stability and transition phenomena without the transition-promoting effects of acoustic radiation from tunnel walls. In this experiment, a flared-cone model under adiabatic- and cooled-wall conditions was placed in a calibrated, "quiet" Mach 6 flow and the stability of the boundary layer was investigated using a prototype constant-voltage anemometer. The results of this experiment were compared with linear-stability theory predictions and good agreement was found in the prediction of second-mode frequencies and growth. In addition, the same "N = 10" criterion used to predict boundary-layer transition in subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flows was found to be applicable for the hypersonic flow regime as well. Under cooled-wall conditions, a unique set of continuous spectra data was acquired that documents the linear, nonlinear, and breakdown regions associated with the transition of hypersonic flow under low-noise conditions

Book excerpt: These two volumes contain the proceedings of the workshop on the Institute for Computer Instability and Transition, sponsored by Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE) and the Langley Research Center (LaRC), during May 15 to June 9, 1989. The work shop coincided with the initiation of a new, focused research pro gram on instability and transition at LaRC. The objectives of the workshop were to (i) expose the academic community to current technologically important issues of instability and transition in shear flows over the entire speed range, (ii) acquaint the academic com munity with the unique combination of theoretical, computational and experimental capabilities at LaRC and foster interaction with these facilities, (iii) review current state-of-the-art and propose fu ture directions for instability and transition research, (iv) accelerate progress in elucidating basic understanding of transition phenomena and in transferring this knowledge into improved design methodolo gies through improved transition modeling, and (v) establish mech anisms for continued interaction. The objectives (i) to (iii) were of course immediately met. It is still premature to assess whether ob jectives (iv) and (v) are achieved. The workshop program consisted of tutorials, research presenta tions, panel discussions, experimental and computational demonstra tions, and collaborative projects.

Book excerpt: A study was conducted to investigate the effects of wind tunnel test section noise on the location of boundary-layer transition. The study was carried out by conducting experiments on a slender, highly polished cone with an included angle of 10 deg. Wind tunnel test section noise was measured by microphones flush-mounted on the cone surface. In most of the experiments, boundary-layer transition was measured with a surface-mounted, traversing pitot pressure probe. The experiments were conducted in 23 different subsonic, transonic, and supersonic wind tunnels over a Mach number range from 0.2 to 5.5 and a unit Reynolds number range from 1.0 to 7.0 million per foot, the bulk of the data being obtained between 2.0 and 4.0 million per foot. The results show an influence of wind tunnel noise on boundary-layer transition for most of the wind tunnels. (Author)
