Naval Special Warfare (NSW) personnel are often tasked with in-water operations in thermally stressful environments. Warm-water diving operations have become a concern for NSW as modern theaters of conflict include bodies of water that can reach temperatures well above 34°C or 93.2°F (e.g., Persian Gulf). Factors of extended dive duration, garments that impair heat dissipation and strenuous workloads can compound the effects of heat stress in warm water and have an adverse impact on health, personnel safety, and mission performance. Precooling has been shown to extend work performance in hot, humid air environments. Precooling prior to warm-water immersion may alleviate some of the problems associated with thermal stress in warm water by increasing an individual's capacity to store heat and decreasing the thermal strain induced by exercise. the objective of this research was to evaluate whole-body, head-out precooling in cold water as a method to increase performance during and after 30 minutes of strenuous exercise in 36.6°C (97.8°F) water. Participants served as their own controls. Specific objectives were to determine if (a) whole-body precooling prior to exercise in warm water results in a greater overall work output in a defined time period, (b) cumulative heat storage during exercise in warm water is reduced by whole-body precooling, and (c) physical and cognitive performance following warm-water exercise are improved by whole-body precooling. Participants (n=11) underwent precooling and control phases, followed by 30 minutes of strenuous exercise in warm water, and then completed physical and cognitive test batteries. Body temperature was monitored continuously. Total work output, changes in body temperature, heat storage, physical performance, cognitive performance, and blood lactate levels were used to measure the effect of precooling. Precooling had minimal impact on functional performance, although heat storage capacity and sustained hand grip measures were significantly enhanced. Results suggest the precooling profile used in this study would not significantly extend work times or increase safety for work performed in warm water. Active cooling while in warm water may be a better research approach to extend safety and duration in warm water.

In preparation for hot environments, individuals commonly complete heat acclimation protocols that initiate physiological and perceptual adaptations to reduce thermal strain and improve physical capabilities. However,conventional exercise-heat acclimation interventions can be costly and impractical, as they require access to an artificial hot environment and often require control of core temperature during exercise. As such, there is a demand for a flexible heat acclimation intervention that can be easily incorporated into the daily training of athletes and military/occupationalpersonnel. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to develop a novel and practical post-exercisehot water immersion heat acclimation protocol.Firstly, 6-days of submaximal exercise in temperate conditions followed by a hot water immersion induced hallmark heat acclimation adaptations during submaximal exercise intemperate and hot conditions and improved endurance exercise performance in the heat (Chapter 4). The initiated adaptations were also not specific to the clock-time of when heat exposures occurred (Chapter 5). Post-exercise hot water immersion also initiated hallmark heat acclimation adaptations in both endurance trained and recreationally active individuals (Chapter 6). In addition, the decay of the induced adaptations following post-exercise hotwater immersion is slow, with no observable loss of heat acclimation two weeks following the cessation of the protocol (Chapter 7).The studies presented in this thesis demonstrate that the novel post-exercise hot waterimmersion intervention provides heat acclimation and reduces thermal strain during exercisein the heat. Future research is required to optimise this technique to improve its incorporation into different military/occupational or athlete scenarios and assess the impact of the intervention on the incidence of exertional heat illness.

Book excerpt: Vigorous exercise in a hot and humid environment can substantially impair exercise performance and exercise capacity compared to moderate temperature conditions. Cycling requires high force generation and consequently utilizes a high rate of energy expenditure and often takes place during the hot summer months, which also contributes to heat storage and a rise in core temperature during exercise. There are several factors that could affect exercise performance, however, one explanation for the decrease in exercise performance while working in the heat is the strain put on the cardiovascular system. Part of this strain involves cardiovascular drift (CV drift), defined as a steady increase in heart rate (HR) and a decrease in stroke volume (SV) that occur during an extended bout of constant-rate, submaximal exercise [50-75% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)]. Precooling has been shown in previous studies to diminish cardiovascular strain and thus, improve exercise performance during prolonged exercise lasting between 15 - 45 min in hot ambient temperatures. In order to evaluate the effects of precooling on cycling performance, two studies and a literature review were conducted. The first study evaluated the effects of 20 min of precooling the upper body (torso, head and neck) during an active warm-up, followed by a 15-km simulated time trial. The second study evaluated the effects on CV drift following 20 min of whole body (calve, thigh, torso, neck and head) precooling. Healthy and physically active male cyclists were recruited for both of the studies. A repeated measures, counterbalanced design was used for both of the studies. For both studies, the effect of pre-cooling on time trial performance and CV drift showed very limited differences between the cooling intervention and the control trials. The method of cooling used in both trials may not be the best way to truly decrease the core temperature enough to elicit a true ergogenic effect in time trial pace cycling and CV drift. More research looking at a practical and convenient way of cooling cyclists before exercising in the heat is warranted.
