Book excerpt: Reinforcement: Behavioral Analyses covers the proceedings of the 1970 Symposium on Schedule-induced and Schedule-Dependent Phenomena, held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This symposium highlights theoretically inclined papers on reinforcement processes. This text contains 10 chapters and begins with a description of how behavior is induced by various environmental events, especially reinforcing events, as well as the relationship between control by inducing stimuli and reinforceability. The subsequent chapters deal with reinforcement phenomena in terms of preference relations and the conditioned emotional responses in terms of opposing motivational processes. These topics are followed by reviews of schedule-dependent effects of preaversive stimuli and the maintenance of behavior by apparent reinforcers that might be expected to punish, as well as the identification of critical variable that underlie the phenomenon. Other chapters examine the interactions between operant and responded conditioning processes. The final chapters outline the experiments on behavior stream whose hallmark is reinforcement if the absence of specified behavior. These chapters emphasize the analogy between the evolution of species and the modification of behavior. This book will be of value to behaviorists and psychologists.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Operant Behavior by : Werner K. Honig
Download or read book Handbook of Operant Behavior written by Werner K. Honig and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic edition of the Handbook of Operant Behavior presents seminal work in the field of learning and behavior, foreshadowing a new direction for learning research, and presenting many questions that remain unanswered. Featuring impressive contributions from leading figures across the field—ranging from N. J. Mackintosh from what was to become the cognitive school through Morse, Kelleher, Hutchinson, and Hineline on the neglected topic of aversive control to Blough and Blough on psychophysics to Philip Teitelbaum on behavioral physiology—the book is a must-read for anyone interested in human and animal learning. In a newly written introduction, J. E. R. Staddon highlights several issues that deserve more attention: how language is learned and syntax evolves, how animals choose, and a new paradigm for the study of learning in general. The book is essential reading for all students and researchers of learning and behavior, and aims to encourage researchers to revisit some of the fascinating behavioral questions raised by the original book.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Hunger and Effort on Response Variability in Rats by : Catherine M. Mingee
Download or read book The Effect of Hunger and Effort on Response Variability in Rats written by Catherine M. Mingee and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Response variability may be influenced by multiple factors in the environment as well as an individual's previous experiences. This study was designed to investigate the effect of hunger drive and effortfulness of response on rats' response variability in a two-choice lever press situation. Rats were tested for a total of four weeks, Week 1 was considered to be between-groups and Weeks 1 - 4 were combined to test within-subjects data. Variability was measured in three different ways: the number of times the response location changed in a single session, the length of the first group of responses before changing response and the mean length of responses before changing response location. Between-groups data suggest neither hunger nor effort influence response variability in rats. Within-subjects data suggest hunger did not play a role in response variability, however, effort was significant. Variability of response increased when responding required less effort, as illustrated by all three measures of variability: Fchanges(1,14)=10.41, p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout this text, many of the research paradigms and methodologies across experimental analysis of behavior (EAB) and applied behavior analysis (ABA) are presented within the "bench-to-bedside" approach of translational research described by the National Institutes of Health. The first few chapters of the text introduce underlying core tenets of behaviorism as well as core characteristics and methods that define the field of behavior analysis. The next several chapters of the book introduce the reader to some of the foundational principles of behavior analysis, with coverage from both the EAB and ABA perspectives. The final chapters of the book cover topics for which there has been ample basic, applied, and translational research conducted. The text concludes with a chapter on ethics, which includes content related to ethical issues in research, ethical issues in clinical practice, and the ethical use of nonhuman animals and special populations in research"--
