Book excerpt: Gyroscopic cross coupling between pitch and yaw was simulated with a variable-stability helicopter while hovering in a yawing maneuver to ascertain the effect of cross coupling on handling qualities. Pilot ratings of the controllability of cross coupling were obtained for various combinations of longitudinal control power, angular velocity about the yaw axis, and simulated engine angular momentum. A theoretical investigation, supplemented by simulator data, was undertaken to determine the effect of longitudinal damping on the coupling controllability. Also, a comparison was made between flight and simulator data. The results indicated that for an aircraft with otherwise satisfactory longitudinal handling qualities, the level of cross coupling is satisfactory when less than 30 percent of the available longitudinal control will trim out the largest gyroscopic coupling moment which might be encountered. Increased longitudinal damping resulted in a significant increase in the controllability of pitch-yaw gyroscopic cross coupling.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation to determine the ranges of various lateral directional characteristics required to provide adequate flying qualities for turning maneuvers at low speed was undertaken using an airborne V/STOL aircraft simulator. Five parameters were varied in a systematic manner: the damping ratio, the frequency, and the ratio and the frequency of the numerator of the roll-angle to aileron-control-input transfer function. The pilots performed a low speed, visual maneuvering task and documented their assessment of the characteristics through extensive comments and a numerical rating. The report presents all the data categorized with respect to the test parameters. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hover analysis considers pilot attitude and position control tasks in the presence of horizontal gusts. The effects of each of the stability derivatives on the difficulty of the control tasks and on the closed-loop gust responses are determined. It is clearly shown that the handling qualities studies of control sensitivity and angular damping must consider the influences of M sub u (or L sub v) and should include gust inputs. These conclusions are substantiated by previous variable-stability-helicopter experiments. The effects of vehicle size and geometry are investigated by several approaches. The key result of increasing size is found to be a reduction in M sub u and L sub v which can, in turn, lower the requirements for control power and damping. The handling qualities during transition of two vehicles, a tilt duct and a tilt wing, which were previously tested on a simulator are analyzed. It is shown that both trim control and perturbations about the trim conditions must be considered. In fact, part of the increased difficulty in landing transitions, in comparison with takeoff transitions, is due to more difficult trim control; the much more stringent position control requirements in landing are also a contributing factor.

This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of analysis of cockpit lateral control feel-system studies. Variations in feel-system natural frequency, damping, and command sensing reference (force and position) were investigated, in combination with variations in the aircraft response characteristics. The primary data for the report were obtained from a flight investigation conducted with a variable-stability airplane, with additional information taken from other flight experiments and ground-based simulations for both airplanes and helicopters . The study consisted of analysis of handling qualities ratings and extraction of open-loop, pilot-vehicle describing functions from sum-of-sines tracking data, including, for a limited subset of these data, the development of pilot models. The study confirms the findings of other investigators that the effects on pilot opinion of cockpit feel-system dynamics are not equivalent to a comparable level of added time delay, and until a more comprehensive set of criteria are developed, it is recommended that feel-system dynamics be considered a delay-inducing element in the aircraft response. The best correlation with time-delay requirements was found when the feel-system dynamics were included in the delay measurements, regardless of the command reference. This is a radical departure from past approaches. Mitchell, David G. and Aponso, Bimal L. and Klyde, David H. This book was released on 1982 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations of motion are derived for two existing dual balance systems used at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) to obtain measurements of aerodynamic cross and cross-coupling derivatives. The complete equations of motion presented include the effects of sting motion. Each system incorporates a dynamic cross flexure balance and a five-component static balance. The primary deflection modes of the balances were confirmed using a holographic interferometry measurement technique. Both laboratory and wind tunnel data are presented to illustrate dynamic effects. Book Synopsis Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Some New Longitudinal Handling Qualities Parameters by : Henry R. Jex
Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Some New Longitudinal Handling Qualities Parameters written by Henry R. Jex and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systems-analysis theory of handling qualities (which describes the pilot's adaptive behavior in closed-loop operation by servo techniques, and relates his opinion-ratings to his adapted characteristics and the system performance) is used to reveal some important parameters associated with the numerator terms in the airframe longitudinal transfer function. The predictions are verified by five experienced test pilots operating in a fixed-base aircraft simulator. Four possible numerator effects on handling qualities are analyzed theoretically: short-period lead effect on pitch attitude tracking, static-to-short-period gain effects on attitude tracking, short-period lead effects on the control of short-period divergence, and numerator frequency and damping effects on altitude tracking. The results are correlated with other test work, and the implications of these results on future handling qualities research and specifications are discussed.
