Book excerpt: Two concurrent studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of selenium (Se) supplementation on beef cows. Trial 1 was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of two intrareticular Se supplementation delivery systems. Trial 2 was designed to evaluate the transfer of Se across the placenta and through the colostrum in beef cows. One hundred fifty, selenium (Se) deficient, pregnant crossbred beef cows were assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups: group A, negative control; group B, 1 Dura-Se bolus at 0 and 119 d; group C, 1 Dura-se at 0 d; and group D, 2 Permasel pellets at 0 d. Cattle were maintained on selenium deficient pastures or forages prepared from these pastures. Blood samples were collected from cows before treatment administration (0 time) and thereafter at 28, 52, 119, and 220 d. Calves from cows selected for data collection above were sampled at birth. Blood samples were collected from calves, prior to suckling, and were analyzed for whole blood selenium (WBSe) concentration. Colostrum samples were collected from dams and analyzed for total Se concentration. Additional samples were collected from calves 24-48 hours post suckling and analyzed for WBSe concentration and serum creatine kinase (CK) level. Weight and health data were recorded on all cows at each blood collection date. Birth weight, sex, and health were recorded on all calves at parturition. Whole blood selenium concentration of cows from all supplemented groups were significantly higher (P.001) than controls at all sample dates after treatments began. By the end of the 220 d study, treatment group B attained significantly higher (P.001) WBSe concentrations than any other group. Calves from all Se treated groups had significantly (P.001) higher WBSe concentrations, both pre- and post-suckling, than controls. Post-suckle WBSe concentration of calves were not significantly (P.05) different than pre-suckle concentrations in any of the groups. Colostrum selenium concentration from Se supplemented cows were significantly (P.001) higher than from control cows. No difference (P.05) was determined in plasma CK activities or birth weights between groups of calves. Seven animals died, two of which showed signs of Se deficiency. Necropsy of 5 calves provided no evidence linking these deaths to selenium treatments. No differences (P.05) in mortality between groups were determined.

Book excerpt: Metabolic and performance parameters of beef calves were compared between Se supplemented (Se) and control (C) dam treatment groups from known Se deficient cattle. Four trials were conducted at three locations involving 50, 36, 25 and 39 experimental dam/calf pairs. Se supplementation was either two 30 gram oral boluses (90% iron, 10% elemental Se) or intramuscular injection of sodium selenite (.055 mg Se/kg BW) and vit. E (.75 IU/kg BW) given to dams prepartum. Se boluses (P

Selenium deficiency has been associated with a wide range of costly disorders in cattle, such as retained placenta, lowered milk production, reduced growth rate, altered immune responses and reduced disease resistance. Mastitis is likely to provide the most convincing evidence for the influence of Se on disease resistance. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the effect of Se status and Se supplementation on milk Se concentration, and on indicators of udder health. A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of oral Se supplementation on milk Se concentration in cattle indicated that milk Se concentration increased, on average, 0.16 mol/L, with a significant heterogeneity among studies. North American cows supplemented with Se yeast had higher milk Se concentration when measured approximately 75 d after the beginning of supplementation. This information provided the basis for tailoring daily animal requirements in order to enhance Se intake of consumers of dairy products. Mean cow-level milk Se concentration was considered marginal in 14% of dairy cows from Atlantic Canadian dairy herds. The risk of having a marginal Se status was highest when cows were pastured during the grazing season. Selenium status was not associated with the overall odds of new intramammary infections (IMI) in the dry period. However, new IMI caused by Streptococcus spp. and by other Gram-positive pathogens increased with higher milk Se concentration. Bulk tank milk Se from Canadian herds was not associated with milk production parameters or bulk tank somatic cell count (BTSCC). However, higher values of BTSe were associated with lower risk of being a Staph. aureus-positive herd. In pastured herds in Chile, whole blood activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) increased after Se supplementation beginning 45 days before calving, no matter what source of Se was used. Supplementation did not affect udder health in the subsequent lactation in multiparous cows, indicating that dietary basal Se intake (approximately 20% of the current recommendation) was adequate for preventing subclinical mastitis in pasture-based cows in Southern Chile. The effect of prepartum supplementation with a single injection of barium selenate or organic Se on the risk of IMI and SCC around calving in pastured first-lactation dairy heifers was studied in Chilean dairy herds. Supplementation was accompanied by a reduction in the prevalence of IMI and SCC at calving, but did not affect the risk of new IMI and SCC in milk during the balance of the first month of lactation. In conclusion, milk Se concentration does not appear to be a principal determinant of udder health in Atlantic Canadian dairy herds, or milk production parameters in Canadian dairy herds. However, higher values of BTSe may be associated with lower risk of being a Staph. aureus-positive herd. In cows raised in pastoral systems in Southern Chile, an intake of approximately 1 mg Se/cow/d was adequate for preventing subclinical mastitis during lactation. However, pre-calving Se supplementation appears beneficial for preventing subclinical mastitis shortly after calving in heifers grazing low Se pastures.

Supplementation is especially important in young lambs in order to prevent Se-deficiency signs. In the United States, the FDA regulates Se supplementation to ruminant diets at a level of 0.3 mg/kg Se (as fed basis). Questions still exist regarding what chemical form of Se is the most bioavailable supplement and what are the best supplementation rates for optimal productivity. Three interrelated experiments from the same study were conducted 1) to evaluate the effect of Se source and supplementation rate in ewes on Se status of their lambs at birth, 2) to examine the effect of Se source and supplementation rate on IgG concentrations in ewe colostrum and lamb serum, and 3) to evaluate the effects of Se source and supplementation rate on ewe reproductive performance and subsequent vitality and growth performance of their lambs. For these experiments, 240 ewes were divided into 8 treatment groups and drenched weekly (at an amount equal to their summed daily intake) for one year, including during gestation and early lactation, with no Se (deficient); at recommended levels (0.3 mg/kg) with inorganic sodium selenite, sodium selenate, or organic Se-yeast (Se-Y); or at supranutritional levels (0.9 and 1.5 mg/kg) with sodium selenite or Se yeast. In the third experiment, 88 ewes continued the study into year two for an additional 28 weeks. Year two treatments included no Se (deficient) ewes (n = 25); ewes supplemented at recommended levels (0.3 mg/kg) with organic Se-Y (n = 20); ewes supplemented at supranutritional levels (0.9 and 1.5 mg/kg) with organic Se-Y (n = 18 and 27, respectively). In the first experiment, which assessed the effects of Se source and supplementation rate in ewes on Se status of their offspring, we found that Se administered by weekly drenching of ewes during gestation and early lactation was effective at increasing Se concentrations in ewe colostrum and milk at 30 days in milk (DIM), and in improving the Se status of lambs (whole-blood and serum Se at birth, and skeletal-muscle Se at 14 days of age) (all P 0.001). Selenium concentrations in lacteal secretions and lambs were higher in ewes drenched with Se yeast compared to ewes drenched with inorganic Se sources (P 0.01). Selenium concentrations in lacteal secretions and in lambs increased linearly with supranutritional concentrations of Se yeast (P

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Book excerpt: Describes in detail the holistic approach to the consideration of the health and welfare of the farm animal in relation to the environment in which it is kept. The health and welfare of not only the individual animal but also the herd is discussed comprehensively, beginning with a definition of the terms employed. This is followed by a full analysis of the measurements and observations which can be used to determine the health and welfare status of animals. International and national legislation and private health schemes that are intended to control the spread and eradication of animal diseases are discussed. Included also is the use and form of legislation for the improvement of animal welfare. A description of the role that the animal welfare societies play is given and the effect of different nutritional and housing regimes on animal welfare is considered. The book ends with a look into the future and assesses the effects of new breeding techniques, genetic engineering and the increase of worldwide government involvement in animal production.
