Book excerpt: Turbulence: Perspectives on Flow and Sediment Transport outlines the fundamental principles of the measurement and analysis of turbulent flow and sediment transport. It reviews laboratory work over the last three decades on near-boundary flow structure, as well as providing more recent research dealing with the high frequency monitoring and modelling of sediment transport. The research sections address aspects of turbulence characteristics and sediment behaviour in fluvial, tidal and aeolian boundary layers. Throughout, emphasis is upon the practicalities of measurement and modelling under field conditions. The effects of roughness transitions are extensively discussed and some of the most popular instrumentation is reviewed. This book brings together contributions from twenty researchers worldwide from many disciplines connected with earth sciences, engineering and fluid dynamics, providing both review material and some of the latest research into the small-scale interactions of turbulence and sediment transport in geophysical boundary layers. The book is ideally suited to a wide audience, from advanced undergraduate level onwards.

An examination of the effects of uncertainty in the predictive capability of our model reveals that this overshadows the slight improvement resulting from accounting for stratification. Finally, our stratification model appears to be nearly equivalent to making von Karman's constant a variable as done in the earliest attempts to account for stratification in sediment-laden flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cohesive sediment, or mud, is encountered in most water bodies throughout the world. Often mud is a valuable resource, synonymous with fertile land, enriching the natural environment and used as an important building material. Yet mud also hinders navigation and consequently, dredging operations have been carried out since ancient times to safeguard navigation. Unfortunately, many mud deposits are now contaminated, endangering the eco-system and increasing the costs of dredging operations. The transport and fate of mud in the environment are still poorly understood and the need for basic research remains. This text contains the proceedings of the INTERCOH-2000 conference on progress in cohesive sediment research. It was the sixth in a series of conferences initially started by Professor Ashish Mehta in 1984 as a "Workshop on Cohesive Sediment Dynamics with Special Reference to the Processes in Estuaries". During these conferences the character of the first workshop has always been maintained, that is, small scale and dedicated to the physical and engineering aspects of cohesive sediments, without parallel sessions, but with ample time for discussions during and after the presentations, and followed by a book of proceedings containing thoroughly reviewed papers. INTERCOH-2000 was integrated with the final workshop of the COSINUS project. This project was carried out as a part of the European MAST-3 programme, and almost all European cohesive sediment workers were involved. INTERCOH-2000 focused on the behaviour and modelling of concentrated benthic suspensions, i.e. high-concentrated near-bed suspensions of cohesive sediment. Special attention was paid to: sediment - turbulence interaction; flocculation and settling velocity; high-concentrated mud suspensions; processes in the bed - consolidation; processes on the bed - erosion; field observations on mud dynamics; instrumentation; and numerical modelling.

Book excerpt: Direct estimates of size distribution of suspended sediments in the vicinity of the experiment site show a remarkably stable floc mode peak under varying wave and turbulence conditions. Indirect estimates of equilibrium floc size are obtained through calculations of an analytical flocculation model that uses observation-based parameters. With a floc size input based on the observations, the model reproduces currents and suspended sediment concentrations accurately; modeled Reynolds stresses match the low wave-bias estimates, with better agreement for cases of stronger currents and smaller wave-orbital velocities. The numerical simulations suggest that sediment-induced stratification effects are the same order of magnitude as turbulent dissipation, and thus play a significant role in the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) balance within the tidal boundary layer. However, inside the wave boundary layer, the ratio of stratification to shear-induced turbulence production (i.e., gradient Richardson number) decreases significantly; shear-induced turbulence production and turbulent dissipation dominate the TKE balance. For these observations, model results show that the vertical structures of currents and Reynolds stresses are relatively insensitive to the exact floc size. Future efforts should include analysis of wider range of conditions (especially events with higher near-bed concentrations), and comparison of model results with a more detailed vertical structure of suspended sediment concentration.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inner surf and swash zones are highly dynamic regions of the nearshore zone, characterized by unsteady, turbulent, sediment- and bubble-laden flows. Hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes occurring in these zones control sand exchange between the surf zone and foreshore, leading to foreshore morphological variation. Increased scientific interest and technological advances have contributed to the more recent advances in understanding of inner-surf and swash-zone processes. However, there is still the need of near-bed measurements of hydrodynamic and sediment transport to identify the role that small-scale inner-surf and swash-zone processes have on the beach during storm beach recovery (accretive conditions) and mesoscale meteorological phenomena (wind forcing mechanism). Therefore, two field-based studies were conducted to acquire detailed observations to address these needs. First, a field experiment was conducted on a steep sloping beach at South Bethany Beach, Delaware, USA in an attempt to quantify the foreshore morphological change during post-storm recovery. Near-bed, highly resolved hydrodynamic and sediment concentration measurements were collected at five cross-shore locations across the foreshore. Suspended sediment transport rates were estimated using instantaneous measurements of flow velocity and suspended sediment concentrations. A spatial and temporal variation of suspended sediment transport rates across the foreshore was identified. The larger transport events resulted from flow interactions that localized suspension and advection of sediment from the point of bore collapse and deposited landward (mostly by the cross-shore component). Net sediment transport and the associated foreshore morphological change were quantified via cross-shore suspended sediment transport rate gradients and an energetics-based suspended sediment transport model. Net suspended sediment transport rate gradient estimates exceeded by two orders of magnitude the net transport quantified via bathymetric difference over each tidal cycle, highlighting the difficulty of predicting transport processes even under weak accretion conditions. This discrepancy implies that all potential mechanisms that enhance sediment transport (e.g. turbulence generated by swash bores, sediment advection) and complete measurements for the full flow duration and throughout the water column are needed to improve sediment transport rate estimates in the inner-surf and swash zone. However, these analyses served to relate the small-scale processes to large temporal and spatial scale accretive patterns. ☐ A second field study was conducted on a microtidal, low wave energy, sea breeze dominated sandy beach in Sisal, Yucatán, Mexico to investigate the effects of local (land/sea breeze) and synoptic (Norte) scale meteorological events on inner-surf and swash-zone dynamics. Flow velocities and suspended sediment concentrations were measured concurrently at three cross-shore locations. The high-resolution data allowed the quantification of bed shear stress, turbulent dissipation rate and sediment transport rates. The change in wind speed and direction induced pronounced changes to the inner-surf and swash-zone dynamics. Field observations showed that strong inner-surf and swash-zone bed shear stresses, turbulence intensity and sediment suspension occur during sea breezes and Norte. Similarities between cross-shore and alongshore hydrodynamic parameters estimated during sea breezes and the Norte indicate that during sea breezes a significant amount of sediment can be mobilized inducing foreshore morphological changes similar to or greater than the effects generated by a short duration small storm. However, despite the milder energy conditions during land breezes, when these coincide with high tides, the estimated instantaneous hydrodynamic and sediment transport parameters often had similar orders of magnitude to sea breezes. These observations suggest that land breeze, under ideal conditions, can mobilize considerable amounts of sediment across the foreshore.
