Book Synopsis Effects of Turbidity and Suspended Material in Aquatic Environments by : Edward M. Stern
Download or read book Effects of Turbidity and Suspended Material in Aquatic Environments written by Edward M. Stern and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature review of the effects of turbidity and suspended material in aquatic environments covers the following subjects: definitions, units of measure, and methods of measurement; origins; and effects in aquatic environments. Turbidity, regardless of the multiplicity of definitions, units of measure, and methods of measurement, is an expression of the optical properties of water that cause light to be scattered and absorbed rather than transmitted in a straight line. Turbidity is not the same as siltation, although the terms have been used synonymously in the past. The various units of measure include the Jackson Turbidity UNIT (JTU), Formazin Turbidity Unit (FTU), and Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU). The methods of measuring percent transmission or the weight per volume concentration of suspended particulates are based on either gravimetric or optical techniques.

Book Synopsis Silt, Turbidity and Suspended Sediments in the Aquatic Environment by : Ontario. Ministry of Natural Resources. Southern Region. Science and Technology Transfer Unit
Download or read book Silt, Turbidity and Suspended Sediments in the Aquatic Environment written by Ontario. Ministry of Natural Resources. Southern Region. Science and Technology Transfer Unit and published by Brockville : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Science and Technology Transfer Unit. This book was released on 1995 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impacts of siltation and suspended sediments on water quality and resident aquatic organisms is one of the most common problems facing resource managers today. Most construction activities in or near a watercourse have the potential to result in decreased shoreline stability and/or an increase in siltation, suspended sediments and turbidity. This annotated biliography was prepared in response to requests from seveal Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources biologists and technicians in the Southern Region. The author attempted to assemble and summarize reference material on various aspects of this topic including sources of suspended solids, physical/chemical processes, impacts to water quality and aquatic life, and remediations. This bibliography is intended to prove a consolidation and synthesis of information which is readily available for day-to-day use by field staff. Almost 1200 references are cited.

Download or read book Water Quality written by Claude E. Boyd and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is of great importance to humans and other living organisms. The study of water quality draws information from a variety of disciplines including chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, engineering, and resource management. University training in water quality is often limited to specialized courses in engineering, ecology, and fisheries curricula. This book also offers a basic understanding of water quality to professionals who are not formally trained in the subject. The revised third edition updates and expands the discussion, and incorporates additional figures and illustrative problems. Improvements include a new chapter on basic chemistry, a more comprehensive chapter on hydrology, and an updated chapter on regulations and standards. Because it employs only first-year college-level chemistry and very basic physics, the book is well-suited as the foundation for a general introductory course in water quality. It is equally useful as a guide for self-study and an in-depth resource for general readers.
Book Synopsis Estuarine Ecology by : John W. Day, Jr.
Download or read book Estuarine Ecology written by John W. Day, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are among the most biologically productive ecosystems on the planet--critical to the life cycles of fish, other aquatic animals, and the creatures which feed on them. Estuarine Ecology, Second Edition, covers the physical and chemical aspects of estuaries, the biology and ecology of key organisms, the flow of organic matter through estuaries, and human interactions, such as the environmental impact of fisheries on estuaries and the effects of global climate change on these important ecosystems. Authored by a team of world experts from the estuarine science community, this long-awaited, full-color edition includes new chapters covering phytoplankton, seagrasses, coastal marshes, mangroves, benthic algae, Integrated Coastal Zone Management techniques, and the effects of global climate change. It also features an entriely new section on estuarine ecosystem processes, trophic webs, ecosystem metabolism, and the interactions between estuaries and other ecosystems such as wetlands and marshes
Book Synopsis Fate and Effects of Sediment-Bound Chemicals in Aquatic Systems by : Kenneth L. Dickson
Download or read book Fate and Effects of Sediment-Bound Chemicals in Aquatic Systems written by Kenneth L. Dickson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fate and Effects of Sediment-Bound Chemicals in Aquatic Systems presents the proceedings of the Sixth Pellston Workshop, held in Florissant, Colorado on August 12–17, 1984. This book presents the development of scientific inquiry of hazards to the aquatic environment. Organized into 27 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of water quality significance of sediment-associated contaminants to aquatic life. This text then addresses the topic of the role of suspended and settled sediments in regulating the effects of chemicals in the aquatic environment. Other chapters consider the nature and extent of partitioning and bioavailability, which are key elements in research efforts toward assessing the effects of sediments on water quality. This book discusses as well the regulatory and management strategies for chemicals entering public water supplies. The final chapter deals with conclusions and recommendations identified during the workshop. This book is a valuable resource for biologists and environmental scientists.
Book Synopsis Water Quality for Ecosystem and Human Health by : Geneviève M. Carr
Download or read book Water Quality for Ecosystem and Human Health written by Geneviève M. Carr and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is intended to provide an overview of the major components of surface and ground water quality and how these relate to ecosystem and human health. Local, regional and global assessments of water quality monitoring data are used to illustrate key features of aquatic environments, and to demonstrate how human activities on the landscape can influence water quality in both positive and negative ways. Clear and concise background knowledge on water quality can serve to support other water assessments.
