Book excerpt: Three different models for representing an axially symmetric, magnetically focused electron beam, the laminar model, the optical model and the ballistic model, are analyzed mathematically and the computed behavior of each is compared with experimental observations of real electron beams. The over-all behavior of the laminar model agrees to some ex ent with the behavior of real electron beams; however, the motion of individual electrons or groups of electrons is not at all well predicted by the laminar model. The optical model describes with good accuracy the motion of individual electrons or groups of electrons, as well as the over-all behavior of real beams. The spreading of a beam by ther al velocities and the appearance of images in the current density at periodic intervals along a beam, phenomena that are observed experimentally, are predicted accurately by the optical model. Simple forms of lens aberrations are also treated with the aid of the optical model.

Book excerpt: Do you design and build vacuum electron devices, or work with the systems that use them? Quickly develop a solid understanding of how these devices work with this authoritative guide, written by an author with over fifty years of experience in the field. Rigorous in its approach, it focuses on the theory and design of commercially significant types of gridded, linear-beam, crossed-field and fast-wave tubes. Essential components such as waveguides, resonators, slow-wave structures, electron guns, beams, magnets and collectors are also covered, as well as the integration and reliable operation of devices in microwave and RF systems. Complex mathematical analysis is kept to a minimum, and Mathcad worksheets supporting the book online aid understanding of key concepts and connect the theory with practice. Including coverage of primary sources and current research trends, this is essential reading for researchers, practitioners and graduate students working on vacuum electron devices.

Book excerpt: Written by an internationally recognized as an expert on the subject of microwave (MW) tubes, this book presents and describes the many types of microwave tubes, and despite competition from solid-state devices (those using GaN, SiC, et cetera), which continue to be used widely and find new applications in defense, communications, medical, and industrial drying. Helix traveling wave tubes (TWTs), as well as coupled cavity TWTs are covered. Klystrons, and how they work, are described, along with the physics behind it and examples of devices and their uses. Vacuum electron devices are explained in detail and examines the harsh environment that must exist in tubes if they are to operate properly. The secondary emission process and its role in the operation of crossed-field devices is also discussed. The design of collectors for linear-beam tubes, including power dissipation and power recovery, are explored. Discussions of important noise sources and techniques that can be used to minimize their effects are also included. Presented in full color, this book contains a balance of practical and theoretical material so that those new to microwave tubes as well as experienced microwave tube technicians, engineers, and managers can benefit from its use.

Book excerpt: A brief description and important conclusions are given on work done at the Electronics Research Laboratory of the University of California for the Wright Air Development Division during the period December 15, 1959, through December 15, 1960. The work includes theoretical and experimental studies on high-temperature plasmas and the containment thereof, electron beams, fast-wave interaction with electron streams, solid-state and electron-beam parametric amplifiers, backward-wave interaction with waves on a ferrite rod or in plasmas, large-signal effects in traveling-wave tubes, and novel fast space-charge wave devices.

Book excerpt: "The problem of generating long cylindrical electron beams of almost constant diameter has received much attention in recent years. Space charge spreading due to the repulsion of the like charges in the beam must be eliminated by an external focusing field. Sets of widely spaced electrostatic or magnetostatic lenses (15) have been used where charge densities were low, while uniform longitudinal magnetic fields (2, 15) have been used where charge densities were high. J.R. Pierce (5), in a Letter to the Editor of the Journal of Applied Physics, September 1953, suggested that spatially alternating magnetic fields could be used to advantage in place of the uniform magnetic fields." --

Book excerpt: Advances in Microwaves, Volume 6 is a three-chapter text that explores the fundamental principles of precision coaxial connectors, traveling wave tubes, and junction circulators. Chapter 1 discusses the significant developments in the design, accuracy, and reference standard lines of precision coaxial connectors, with an emphasis on the application of the 7-mm and 14-mm precision coaxial connectors. Chapter 2 examines the stability of strongly modulated beams in a variety of focusing systems, such as uniform magnetic fields (Brillouin and near-Brillouin flow), linearly tapered magnetic fields, and periodic-permanent-magnet field systems. Chapter 3 deals with the theoretical aspects and characteristics of all types of junction circulators, with an emphasis on the lumped-element and the stripline circulator. Discussions on a theorem on passive three-port networks and star and delta networks are covered in the supplementary texts.
