Book excerpt: The investigation of thermo-mechanical and thermal treatments on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of DP590 and TRIP680 steels revealed several critical aspects of the materials' responses to different testing. Various thermo-mechanical treatments were carried out to identify the responses to the said treatments. Following these preconditioning protocols, quasi-static, and high strain-rate tests showed how the materials reacted under tensile testing to fracture. Ensuing heat treatments on the as-received materials were performed to bring about phase fraction changes to each of the steels. These heat-treated DP and TRIP steels were examined to discover microstructural characteristics and mechanical responses through quasi-static and high strain-rate testing. The responses of the steels were analyzed and compared to the as-received testing results to observe the significant changes of mechanical behavior that occurred.

Book excerpt: One of the main aims of steel research for the automotive industry is to develop materials with the optimum combination of relevant properties, cost and productivity. The introduction of new TRansformation Induced Plasticity steels has been driven by the requirements to increase the ductility without compromising the strength. The main phenomenon responsible for the unique mechanical properties in these steels has been proposed to be the formation of multiphase structure, which can contribute to an increase in elongation during straining. The thesis studied the effect of the different alloying additions on the structure-property relationship in the TRIP steels.

Book excerpt: Two types of TRIP steels, a commercial 304L stainless steel and an Fe-10%Cr-5%Ni-8%Mn steel, have been used to investigate the effects of temperature and grain size on the transformation and mechanical behaviors. 304L SS was used to investigate the effects of temperature ranging from 300K to 77K, while the Fe-10%Cr-5%Ni-8%Mn steel was used for the investigation of the effects of the grain size at 300K. At 203K, the fcc grains of the 304L SS with {200} plane normal parallel to the loading direction are preferred for the fcc to bcc transformation and the {200} plane normals of the newly-formed bcc grains are also concentrated along the loading direction. For the fcc to hcp transformation, the fcc grains transform within a wider range of orientation distribution and the hcp basal plane normals are primarily orientated with an anlge [sic] between about 10° to 50° to the loading direction. At 77K, two components, 110 and 111, in contrast to only 110 component at room temperature, develop in the fcc austenite during the deformation. For bcc martensite, the grains are primarily oriented with (100) plane normal parallel to the loading direction. At high strain levels, the bcc phase becomes less textured when the fcc grains with less favorable orientations start to transform. It is illustrated that the phase transformation dominates the texture evolution during the low temperature deformation. The fcc to hcp transformation occurs in a wide angle range and a high shear stress is favored for the hcp phase formation. To investigate the effect of grain size on transformation/deformation behavior, the Fe-10%Cr-5%Ni-8%Mn TRIP steels with different grain sizes (50[mu]m, 350nm, and 250nm) were prepared and in-situ neutron diffraction was performed. The evolution of phase fractions and lattice strains for both austenite and martensites was investigated at 300K. The ultrafine-grained (350nm and 250nm) samples show a combination of high strength and good elongation. The martensite formation and the concurrent load partitioning between the austenite and the newly-forming martensite phases were identified as the source of the strain hardening that facilitates the high ductility maintained in the UFG steel.

Book excerpt: The microstructures of both martensite and bainite, although sharing some common features, depict a plethora of subtle differences that made them unique when studied in further detail. Tailoring the final properties of a microstructure based on one or the other as well as in combination with others and exploring more sophisticated concepts, such as Q&P and nanostructured bainite, are the topics which are the focus of research around the world. In understanding the key microstructural parameters controlling the final properties as well as definition of adequate process parameters to attain the desired microstructures requires that a proper understanding of the mechanism ruling their transformation and a detailed characterization first be acheived. The development of new and powerful scientific techniques and equipment (EBSD, APT, HRTEM, etc.) allow us to gain fundamental insights that help to establish some of the principles by which those microstructures are known. The developments accompanying such findings lead to further developments and intensive research providing the required metallurgical support.

Book excerpt: The influence of C and Al content on phase transformation temperatures is investigated by dilatometric analysis. With the new set of experimental data, an updated thermodynamic description of the Fe-Al-C system is presented, using the thermodynamic data of the limiting binaries and the parameters for the Fe-Al-C ternary system optimized by some of the present authors. A well reproduced vertical section of the Fe-Mn-Si-Al-C system is also presented according to the thermodynamic description of the lower order systems. For the development of P containing transformation induced plasticity steel, the possibility of phosphorous segregating at grain boundary is discussed by thermodynamics as well as kinetics. Lower critical temperature is estimated for the steel to obtain the starting temperature of fast cooling. To understand the minimum rate of fast cooling, pearlite growth kinetics is calculated with self-developed diffusion coefficients of elements at the grain boundary. Over-aging temperature is tentatively determined through the calculation of T0 temperature by both equilibrium and para-equilibrium assumptions.

The book represents a comprehensive treatise on all aspects of the bainite transformation, from the choreography of atoms during the phase change to length scales that are typical of engineering applications. The alloy design that emerges from this explains the role of solute additions, and the pernicious effects of impurities such as hydrogen. The picture presented is self-consistent and therefore is able to guide the reader on the exploitation of theory to the design of some of the most exciting steels, including the world’s first bulk nanostructured metal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This master thesis is going to study and investigate the thermal treatment's effects on the high Mn-TWIP steels. In order to get these aims some factors can be studied, such microstructures and mechanical properties of high Mn-TWIP steels. The objective of this study are as follows:  Study the microstructure evolution of high Mn-TWIP steels thermally treated (i.e. grain size, phase transformation, etc).  Study the mechanical properties (hardness, tensile properties and high cycle fatigue) of high Mn-TWIP steels with different microstructures.  Thermal fatigue evolution (from 0 up to 75 cycles) at 500°C in order to determine the microstructure evolution and their mechanical properties (harness and tensile properties). In present project, in order to study the microstructure the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) used. For testing the mechanical properties, Vickers hardness method applied for hardness test, tension condition for tensile test and high cycle fatigue has been used for fatigue properties. Microstructural study indicates that thermal treatment can change the microstructure of the samples, it observed that the grain size changed in various condition. Martensitic and pearlitic transformation occurred under thermal treatments and thermal fatigue conditions respectively. In samples which were thermally fatigued, the concentration of the pearlitic phase increased by increasing the number of cycles. Thermal treatments can have some effects on mechanical properties. Hardness of the materials decrease by increasing the temperature in thermal treatments while thermal fatigue increases the hardness of materials by increasing the number of cycles. Samples which were thermally treated and thermally fatigued showed more brittle behavior compared with the samples which were not thermally treated. It have seen that the voids, TiN and pearlitic phase are the main reasons of fracture under tensile tests. Finally it observed that the life time of the materials can be affected by annealing the samples at 1000°C and normalizing this sample in air.
