Book excerpt: Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) repair systems for concrete structures have been widely used in civil infrastructure. Concrete-epoxy interfaces (CEI) are formed during the installation of externally bonded FRP systems to concrete structures. Research on their short-term behavior under aggressive environmental conditions has been conducted extensively in the past. Nevertheless, long-term performance and durability issues of these strengthening systems still remain largely uncertain. Thus, it is critical to study the effects of sustained load and temperature on the time-dependent deformation of the concrete-epoxy interface along with the residual strength of the FRP-strengthened concrete element.Single-lap shear and three-point bending test specimens were used to evaluate temperature effect and the time-dependent behavior during sustained loading below and at ultimate strength after the sustained loading period. The test results demonstrated the effects of temperature and sustained loading on creep behavior and on the remaining strength (the fracture energy) after creep duration. The creep responses of single-lap shear and three-point bending test specimens depend on the creep response of the epoxy. The effect of sustained loading on the remaining strength is positive for the single-lap shear specimens. However, this positive effect decreases as the creep duration increases. On the other hand, for the three-point bending test specimens, the sustained loading effect is negative on the remaining strength because presence of sustained loading leads to a weakening in the bond strength in the concrete-epoxy interface, which is evidenced by the fracture surface analysis of tested three-point bending specimens. Results of a numerical study of the single-lap shear specimens are also presented. Numerical models used the viscoelastic model for the creep tests and a plastic damage model for the bond tests. Results were compared with the available experimental results. The results show good correlations between the analysis and tests. It is proven that the creep behavior of the single-lap shear specimen is mainly governed by the creep characteristics of the epoxy. The numerical results also suggest that the redistributing of the interfacial bond stress can lead to an increase in the remaining strength of the single-lap shear specimens. A parametric study is carried out in order to investigate the various factors affecting creep behaviors and bond behaviors of single-lap shear specimens. Elevated temperatures and increased epoxy thicknesses lead to an increase in the remaining strength of the single-lap shear specimens due to stress redistribution occurring during the sustained loading period.

Book excerpt: Near surface mounted (NSM) FRP reinforcement has recently emerged as a promising alternative technology for strengthening concrete structures in both flexure and shear, as opposed to externally bonded FRP strengthening systems. Available research to date has focused primarily on overall member behaviour and/or the various parameters that affect the bond performance of either rectangular NSM strips or round NSM bars. No research has apparently focused on the effect of low or high temperature exposure on NSM FRP performance. It has been suggested by numerous researchers that NSM FRP reinforcement may outperform externally bonded FRP strengthening systems at elevated temperatures, but this assertion has yet to be supported by test results. An extensive review of NSM FRP technology is presented. The results of an experimental program conducted on twenty-three (23) concrete NSM FRP strengthened slab strips are presented to investigate their high (up to 200°C) and low ( -26°C) temperature flexural performance. The effect of using one of two different adhesive systems (epoxy and cement-based) and two different NSM groove widths (6.4 mm and 3.2 mm) is also studied. An innovative photo imaging instrumentation technique is validated against traditional instrumentation techniques for the first time in NSM flexural testing. A numerical layer model is presented and compared against test results. It is demonstrated that low temperature exposure has no measurable negative effects on the flexural performance of the slab strips tested. From high temperature exposures, it is shown that the cementitious adhesive outperforms the epoxy adhesive system, allowing the strengthening system to remain structurally effective for more than 5 hours at 100°C under sustained loads.

Book excerpt: The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for strengthening reinforced concrete structures has become increasingly popular in recent years. However, before FRPs can be implemented in interior building applications their performance during fire must be assessed and understood. There currently remains a paucity of information in this area for most currently available FRP strengthening systems. This thesis presents a study of the mechanical and bond properties of selected currently available FRP strengthening systems for concrete structures at elevated temperatures such as might be experienced during a fire. Testing has been performed and is reported to study the continuous unidirectional coupon tensile strength, lap-splice FRP-to- FRP shear bond strength and tensile elastic modulus at elevated temperatures. Results of thermal characterization tests are also completed in an attempt to relate properties of the polymer matrix, such as the glass transition temperature, and thermal decomposition temperature to the losses of strength and stiffness observed for FRP coupons during steady-state and transient exposure to elevated temperatures up to 200oC. A simple analytical model is presented, for which the input parameters can be determined using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis, to describe the reduction in mechanical and bond properties of the FRP systems at elevated temperatures. Based on this testing and subsequent analysis it is recommended that a conservative limit on the allowable temperature exposure for FRP systems during fire be set as the glass transition temperature measured using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. Furthermore it is suggested that differential scanning calorimetry may not be an appropriate method of determining the glass transition temperature for available FRP systems used in concrete strengthening applications.

This book covers the advantages and disadvantages of these advanced composite materials. The primary advantages, such as high specific strength and stiffness, of advance composite materials result in lighter and durable structures. On the other hand, its linear elastic behavior till failure has been highlighted as the main disadvantage for their structural applications. This book also highlights the various forms in which the FRP components are tailored and stacked up to optimize its strength and stiffness to deliver the high-performance structural as well as non-structural components in its real-life application. The various forms in which FRP materials are developed are described such as uni-directional, cross-ply, angle-ply, hybrid, and functionally graded composites. In addition, various forms in which these materials stacked and/ bonded to fabricate the various structural and non-structural components are described. Most importantly, techniques to extract plant-based cellulosic fibers and its application to fabricate the various forms of sustainable composite products are described. In addition, development of nano-particle-enforced cellulosic fibers for sustainable industrial products has also been presented. Furthermore, the use of advanced composites and natural fiber-based composites has been demonstrated for repair, rehabilitation, and retrofitting of deficient structural systems. Moreover, the comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art research on the test methods for material characterization at room and elevated temperature is presented which will be of high interest to scientists, researchers, students, and engineers working in the fields of composite materials such as FRPs and other forms of composites such as fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC). This book is also helpful for undergraduate, masters, and most importantly Ph.D. research scholars for developing their fundamental understanding on advanced composite materials and their applications in construction as well as industrial sectors.

Book excerpt: In December 1996, the then CEB established a Task Group with the main objective to elaborate design guidelines for the use of FRP reinforcement in accordance with the design format of the CEB-FIP Model Code and Eurocode2. With the merger of CEB and FIP into fib in 1998, this Task Group became fib TG 9.3 FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures in Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Systems. The Task Group consists of about 60 members, representing most European universities, research institutes and industrial companies working in the field of advanced composite reinforcement for concrete structures, as well as corresponding members from Canada, Japan and USA. Meetings are held twice a year and on the research level its work is supported by the EU TMR (European Union Training and Mobility of Researchers) Network "ConFibreCrete”. The work of fib TG 9.3 is performed by five working parties (WP): Material Testing and Characterization (MT&C) Reinforced Concrete (RC) Prestressed Concrete (PC) Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) Marketing and Applications (M&A) This technical report constitutes the work conducted as of to date by the EBR party. This bulletin gives detailed design guidelines on the use of FRP EBR, the practical execution and the quality control, based on the current expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge of the task group members. It is regarded as a progress report since it is not the aim of this report to cover all aspects of RC strengthening with composites. Instead, it focuses on those aspects that form the majority of the design problems. several of the topics presented are subject of ongoing research and development, and the details of some modelling approaches may be subject to future revisions. as knowledge in this field is advancing rapidly, the work of the EBR WP will continue. Inspite of this limit in scope, considerable effort has been made to present a bulletin that is today’s state-of-art in the area of strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement.

Book excerpt: Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials have been a material of interest in the field of structural engineering due to their superior mechanical properties such as high strength to weight ratios and resistance to environmental degradation and corrosion. Even though research has established the material to be a viable option for construction they are highly susceptible to elevated temperatures. There are several systems available on the market and a great deal of research needs to be conducted to investigate the change in properties and different behaviour at elevated temperature to serve as a better basis for design. The main objective of this project and the experimental program presented in this thesis is to study the thermo mechanical properties of the available systems on the market. A summary of the previous research done in the area covering other materials is presented providing an introduction to the behaviour of different systems under elevated temperature. Then, two different experimental programs are presented. The first considers the glass transition temperature and thermal decomposition of the different systems and the second examines the tensile strength of the different systems under different temperature regimes. The results of both experimental programs are presented and then a connection between the thermo mechanical properties of the resins and the overall strength of the system is established. The research demonstrates that the glass transition temperature of the resin used for an FRP strengthening system is the main determinant of the performance at high temperatures.
