The study also examined the differences of teacher collegiality, organizational commitment, and professional commitment in high-achieving and low-achieving schools. The effects of teacher personal variables (e.g. gender, educational level, and professional experience) on teacher collegiality, organizational commitment, and professional commitment were also investigated. A teacher collegiality scale (TCS) was developed and tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analytic techniques. The final TCS comprised seven dimensions, namely (1) Demonstrating Mutual Support and Trust, (2) Observing one another Teaching, (3) Joint Planning and Assessment, (4) Sharing Ideas and Expertise, (5) Teaching each other, (6) Developing Curriculum together, and (7) Sharing Resources. The instruments of organizational commitment and professional commitment were adapted from Meyer, Allen, and Smith (1993). The survey instrument, comprising the TCS and Commitment Scale was distributed to a sample of 364 secondary school teachers in eight high-achieving and nine low-achieving schools located in Islamabad. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to assess the impact of teacher collegiality on teachers’ organizational and professional commitment. Latent Mean Structure Analysis was used to determine the differences in teacher collegiality and teacher commitment between high-achieving and low-achieving school teachers. The effects of demographic variables on study main variables were analyzed using MANOVA. The analysis confirmed that teacher collegiality positively impacted organizational commitment and professional commitment among secondary school teachers in Pakistan. Multi-group SEM analysis did not support for the moderating effects of school type based on achievement. The differences in teacher collegiality and professional commitment were found to be statistically non-significant between high-achieving and low-achieving school teachers. However, organizational commitment among high-achieving school teachers was significantly higher than low-achieving school teachers. Teacher collegiality among female teachers was more evident than male teachers. Female teachers were also found to be more organizationally committed in Pakistani schools.

To meet with the needs of society, reform in biology teaching has taken place all over the world. However, we cannot teach students everything in this rapidly developing world. Accordingly, most academics agree that we should just teach students how to learn and apply biology. It is also the case that if people want to keep up with the development of knowledge, they should keep studying and assessing all their lives. However because the reformat has concentrated on knowledge structures, our teaching methods are still teacher-centered, not student-centered and do not encourage students to achieve lifelong learning and assessment. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Teacher self-efficacy, interest, attitude, qualification, experience and pupils’ academic achievement in secondary school biology. The participants of the study comprises of 254 secondary school teachers and 120 secondary school students. Data collected on the study were analyzed using a stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results reveals that teacher self-efficacy and interest had significant correlation with students achievement scores. Teacher’s self-efficacy being the best predictor of students’ academic achievement in biology was followed by teacher’s interest. Attitude, qualification and experience were not significant correlation with pupil’s achievement in biology. The study recommended that it is high time for primary school biology teachers to have a change of attitude towards the teaching of the subject so that the achievement of universal basic education will not be hindered. Furthermore, primary school educational authorities were called upon to ensure that only teachers who are qualified to teach the subject are employed. Not these alone, their attention was also drawn to the fact that they should design educational programmes that will enhance the teacher self-efficacy for a better prediction of pupils’ achievement in Biology.

Student Locus of Control, Self-Efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were the specific individual student affective factors that were examined in the study. Educational backgrounds of the students were examined as an attempt to explain the differences in mathematics performance at the higher education level. To achieve this, high school teacher characteristics and instructional practices in influencing students’ affective factors were examined. All of the analyses presented were performed on data collected for the study from two institutions of higher education in Cameroon for the student participants and from high school mathematics teachers of the English-Speaking and the French-Speaking subsystems of education. The results of the study show that student internal locus of control, high mathematics self-efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were associated with performance in mathematics at the higher education level. The results also revealed a high significant difference in the performance of the students in mathematics from the two educational backgrounds, the English-Speaking and French-Speaking. The results of the study revealed that the English-Speaking subsystem of education is suffering from an acute shortage of qualified high school mathematics teachers. The results show that only 10.5% of the high school mathematics teachers who participated in the study had postgraduate qualifications as against 56.9% for mathematics teachers of the French-Speaking subsystem. The study recommends the need to replace the present GCE Advanced Level Further Mathematics syllabus with one that reflects the view that Further Mathematics is a subject studied mainly by potential mathematics graduates. The syllabus should have, as one of its objectives, the provision of a link between High School Mathematics and University Mathematics. While improving on the syllabus and the examination system, due consideration should also be given to the problem of acute shortage of qualified high school mathematics teachers for the English-Speaking subsystem of education in Cameroon.

The findings of the study revealed that continuous assessment helps students to remember what has been learned, to concentrate effort on difficult areas of subject and helps identify their areas of strengths and weaknesses. It was also found that there was no significant difference in the teacher’s view of influence continuous assessment to students’ academic achievement based on gender and educational qualification.

The findings further indicated that, the types of leadership style used in selected secondary used in secondary school was participative and encourage relationship among the teachers, The study discovered that teachers are involved in decision making. There was positive impact of participatory leadership style of school heads that dominates the area on the academic performance in selected secondary Arusha City Council. In the light of this study it is recommended that the authorities are responsible for making educational policies and design to provide training and development programmes to head of schools to serve as reference policy decision on leadership.

The total population of the study was 5,725 which consists of 5,522 Junior Secondary School (JSS2) students in Port-Harcourt Secondary Schools and 203 level four (4) hundred students of Business Education department, Rivers State University, Port-Harcourt. A sample size of 509 was drawn using simple random sampling technique. Taro Yamene formular was used to derive the sample size. The instrument for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire developed by the researchers and validated by the research supervisor. The most pertinent priorities for the business studies trainee teachers in dealing with secondary school students’ misconduct in Port-Harcourt metropolis will be to maintain a secure and safe environment and also protect the classroom environment from threats posed by potentially dangerous troubled students. These priorities will obviously require recognizing the warning signs of trouble and preparedness to respond appropriately and decisively. Other priorities will include maintaining a classroom atmosphere of respect and civility, avoiding being manipulated by students with unreasonable demands, responding appropriately to unfounded allegations, and protecting oneself and one’s institution from frivolous lawsuit. However, understanding how the range of students’ misconduct tends to cluster along certain distinctive, recognizable styles is empowering and helpful to the business studies student teachers.

The study adopted the pretest-posttest, control group quasi-experimental research design with a 3x2 factorial matrix. It involved a total of 39 Senior Secondary School II students with hearing impairment in three randomly selected schools in Oyo State. Using the intact class method, the schools were randomly assigned to experimental group I, II and the control. While experimental groups I and II were exposed to Captioned Video Instruction and Direct Instruction on library use respectively, the control group was given instruction on various professions they could take up after graduation. Treatment for the groups took seven weeks after the pre-test. Two instruments were used for the study: Library Use Instruction Test (r=0.91) and Library Practical Use Checklist (r=0.80). Library Use Instruction Test measured the intellectual achievement of participants while Library Practical Use Checklist measured their practical achievement. Nine hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Data collected were analysed using t-test and Analysis of Covariance. Over the years, the practice of continuous assessment has been the pre-evaluation process of the academic success of students before their final examination period. Nowadays, however, it appears that teachers are not using continuous assessment to prepare students for examinations. In view of this, the study investigates the impact of continuous assessment regarding the academic performance of students. The descriptive survey design was employed for the study and a random sampling technique was used to select 120 teachers in ten different secondary schools in Ilorin Metropolis. The instrument used was a self-designed questionnaire entitled "Impact of CA Academic Performance Questionnaire (ICAAPQ)". The study reveals that continuous assessment helps students to remember what has been learnt, to concentrate on difficult areas of a subject, and help to identify their areas of strengths and weaknesses. The author recommends that teachers should work with school counsellors to critically examine students performances in continuous assessment in order to understand their areas of weaknesses.

Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to determine if there were gender differences in the performance of Chemistry practical skills among senior six girls and boys in selected mixed secondary schools in Kampala District from February to March 2004. The study participants were drawn from five mixed secondary schools in the district. A total of fifty students participated, half of them girls and the other half boys. A cross sectional descriptive research design was used involving both quantitative and qualitative research strategies. The instruments of data collection were a Chemistry practical test (Quantitative analysis), student questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Questionnaires were filled out by all students and forty randomly selected students were interviewed by the researcher. The following were the findings: 1. There were no statistical significant differences between girls and boys in their ability to manipulate the apparatus/equipment, take observation, report/record results correctly, and compute/interpret/analyze results during the Chemistry practical. 2. Both female and male students perceived interpreting/analyzing results to be the most difficult skill to perform, whereas manipulation of apparatus/equipment was perceived to be the easy skill to perform during Chemistry practical by both gender. 3. Girls had a poor self-confidence in their ability to perform Chemistry practical, as most of them (90%) believed that boys are better than them. Although girls performed slightly better than boys overall, the skills in which boys performed slightly better than girls in recording/reporting results correctly, and computing/interpreting/analyzing results, contributed a higher percentage in the assessment of Chemistry practical examinations by the UNEB examiners. Hence, it may be the reason why boys perform better than girls in UNEB Chemistry practical examinations, and in 'A' Level Chemistry examinations generally. The recommendations were that Chemistry teachers in 'O' Level should make sure that students are taught mole concept, volumetric analysis and Ionic Chemistry, and balancing equations early enough so that both girls and boys are able to compute/interpret/analyze results. Also, further research should be done on gender and Chemistry practical skill performance, considering qualitative analysis practical for both 'O' and 'A' Level, so that more knowledge is gained about the effect of gender on performance of Chemistry practical skills.
