Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of approvals and disapprovals about the music from the teacher and rehearsal familiarity on the students' preference for the music. Eight middle schools participated in the study with students (N = 440) ranging from sixth to eighth grade. Each of the eight schools was assigned a different treatment condition. Teachers were given either one or two pieces to rehearse with their most advanced level band while giving treatment comments (approval, disapproval, or instruction only) that were provided in a score. Teachers rehearsed the piece(s) for a total of five rehearsals. After the fifth rehearsal, students were given a listening survey to rate their preference for six examples of band music including the two pieces that were used in the study. Students also rated their preference for performing the treatment pieces and were ask to choose one for possible performance. The results of this study indicate that the treatment conditions had a significant effect on both listening and performance preferences. Approval was not significantly different than instruction only or no experience, but significantly different than disapproval in both pieces. The approval condition increased the students' reported music preference more than the disapproval condition. Students who experienced the music through rehearsal rated the music significantly higher than music that was not rehearsed. In cases where both treatment pieces were rehearsed in class, students tended to have the same amount of preference for both pieces, regardless of treatment. Results of this study could be useful to music educators to increase student preference for music performed in class and to improve the music classroom experience. Future research should incorporate actual concert music and include concert performance as a factor that influences music preference.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate factors affecting choral music preferences of adolescents. The rationale for this research comes from the importance of teaching culturally diverse music in 21st-century music classrooms and the possibility that curricular content and ethnic identity may affect preferences for this music. Six research questions guided the study: (1) How are middle school students' preferences for choral arrangements of folk music grouped? (2) Is there a significant main effect of type of curriculum content instruction on middle school choral students' choral music preference scores? (3) Is there a significant main effect of time on middle school choral students' choral music preference scores? (4) Is there a significant type of curriculum content by time interaction? (5) Descriptively, within each ethnic group, does strength of identity relate differently to growth in scores in different interventions? (6) How do middle school students describe their reasons for their preference? One hundred and thirty-two sixth, seventh, and eighth grade chorus members (11 to 15 years old) participated in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three intervention groups receiving different curricular content: music concept-based, sociocultural-based, or discussion-based. At the outset of the study, all subjects took a measure of ethnic identity. Two weeks later, all subjects took a preference pretest of eight music excerpts from choral arrangements of folk songs originating from the following cultures: African, American, Asian, and Latin American/Caribbean. One week after their pretest session, subjects took a posttest while simultaneously receiving one of three interventions based on one of three approaches to curricular content. Two factors emerged from principal axis factor analysis of pretest scores. The first factor (simple texture subscale) included arrangements of folk songs with simple unison or predominantly homophonic vocal textures. The second factor (complex texture subscale) included arrangements of folk songs with complex polyphonic vocal textures. A split-plot ANOVA analysis revealed no statistically significant main effects of intervention or time, and no statistically significant interaction of intervention and time for the simple texture subscale. A second split-plot ANOVA revealed no statistically significant main effects, but a statistically significant interaction of intervention and time for the complex texture subscale. A regression analysis revealed that adding ethnic identity scores to preference pretest scores did not help predict to a significantly better extent posttest scores for any of the three intervention groups. Subjects' open-ended responses were placed into one of four categories: musical, sociocultural/linguistic, affect, or perception of performance. Subjects in the sociocultural-based group wrote more sociocultural/linguistic comments than subjects in the other two groups, and subjects in the discussion-based group wrote more affect comments than subjects in the other two groups. Subjects in all three groups seemed to lack the musical vocabulary to describe why they liked or disliked the selections. Comments about perception of performance most often referred to subjects' perceptions that singing songs with complex textures or songs in a foreign language would be too difficult for their chorus. Numerous factors interact to affect music preferences. By continuing to study their students' music preferences, general music teachers and choral directors can gain further insights into how to best approach culturally unfamiliar music. Using a combination of music concept-based, sociocultural-based, and discussion-based curricular content may be an answer to ways to foster positive preferences for culturally unfamiliar choral music. Focusing on curricular content is important; however, general music teachers and choral directors may find success by initially introducing students to culturally unfamiliar choral music with simple vocal textures before songs with complex vocal textures.

With this knowledge I argue that band directors can select repertoire that both challenges and engages students while still being enjoyable to perform. Despite the existence of studies that consider the many factors that affect music preference, no study has focused exclusively on band music, which remains a vital part of music education in the United States. Students from three high schools rated ten 30-second examples of concert music on a Likert-type scale. I placed these musical examples into five self-defined categories: Harmoniemusik wind pieces, post-tonal wind pieces, publisher-influenced band pieces, contemporary band pieces from within the past fifty years, and British band classics. The results suggest that participation in band has varying influences on music preference. Preference scores for three categories dropped through participation in high school band, while preference scores for two categories rose. Familiarity seems to be the single biggest contributing factor that influences music preference, and future research needs to be conducted in that area.

The purpose of this study was to determine if teacher feedback to sung tonal patterns affected the music self-concept of sixth and seventh grade students. General self-esteem was also tested for correlation with music self-concept. Procedures. One hundred students in sixth and seventh grades from three middle schools in Columbia, Missouri participated in this study. Each student completed the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and the Self-Concept in Music scale in a large group setting. These two scores for each student were used to place students in one of four subgroups: high general self-esteem/high music self-concept, high general self-esteem/low music self-concept, low general self-esteem/high music self-concept, and low general self-esteem/low music self-concept. The students were then randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups (no feedback, appropriate feedback, positive feedback). The students, in a private session, attempted to echo-sing seven tonal patterns. The researcher responded to each attempt according to the assigned treatment and recorded the singing performance scores. Each student then completed the Self-Concept in Music scale once again. Results. No significant main effects or interactions were found. A low positive significant correlation (r =.37) was found between the scores for sung tonal memory and the posttest scores for music self-concept. A low positive significant correlation (r =.28) was also found between the scores for the music self-concept pretest and the scores for general self-esteem. Conclusions. Results of this study validate that students are able to determine their own perception of ability in music, that this perception is stable after a short-term intervention, and that this perception significantly relates to their general self-esteem.

Book excerpt: Music Performance Anxiety can effect musicians of all ages beginning as early as the elementary school years. Teachers, parents, and students are often not equipped to (a) identify the symptoms of MPA and (b) reduce their effect. This project provides teachers with tools they can use to identify and address the symptoms of MPA in middle school students. The exercises, for use in large group rehearsals, with small ensembles, and for home practice, are based on a review of literature on music performance anxiety. They were designed for use during rehearsal warm-ups and during home practice to help reduce the effects of MPA. The author also developed research-based questionnaires and checklists, which were peer-reviewed by other teachers.
