Book excerpt: With nearly 98% of public institutions reporting enrollment of students with a disability, requests for services, supports, and accommodations is increasing (Gordon et al., 2002; National Council on Disabilities, 2003). However, certain barriers and/or perceptions get in the way of students' mobility in seeking and acquiring necessary accommodations. While disability services and accommodations are available, it appears that many students do not take advantage of them in a timely manner. While it is not required for a student to disclose information about a learning disability, the student will not be able to acquire any accommodations. Students should be prepared and equipped with the self-determination and self-advocacy skills to find and use available resources in college. The current research attempted to determine if selected students with a learning disability at James Madison University are able to advocate for themselves by seeking services and/or accommodations upon entering into post-secondary education in relation to his or her knowledge and understanding of the learning disability, degree of transition services, and perceptions about seeking help. The results indicated that those students who came to Disability Services during their freshman year had more preparation in high school for the transition to college; however, it appears that those students who sought services early may have had more serious academic difficulties (e.g., they were still receiving services during their senior year of high school and were more likely to have comorbid attention and anxiety-related concerns). Overall, getting to Disability Services early does seem to make a difference in a student's academic achievement. Implications for school psychologists, suggestions and feedback regarding the development of a transition protocol within the schools, and future research are discussed.

However, it is estimated that only forty percent of students with a learning disability report it to their post-secondary schools, creating difficulties for students to successfully transition to the new academic expectations. Research shows one significant reason for the lack of reporting is students' deficiency in their ability to self-advocate. The current study looks at seven high school students with identified learning disabilities, who receive special education services, to evaluate their understanding and use of self-advocacy skills in their high school setting, in their preparation for transition into post-secondary education. Through the use of the Constructivism-Interpretivism paradigm, with an inductive approach, this case study analysis produced five primary themes and ten associated sub-themes. Analysis of semi-structured interviews and artifacts reveal themes of Awareness, Security, Communication, Experiences, and Motivation. To understand how, from the perspective of the students, these themes emerged and what role they play in the students' understanding, development, and use of self-advocacy, two research questions guide the analysis: (1) How do high school students with learning disabilities view the role of the school and educators in their development and use self-advocacy skills? and (2) How do high school students with learning disabilities understand the role of self-advocacy skills in their preparation for post-secondary studies?

These include social isolation, peer rejection, stress, anxiety, lower grade point average and academic achievement. Despite these challenges, an increasing number of students with SLD are pursuing postsecondary education. Given that SLD represents a life-long disability, students continue to face social, emotional and academic challenges during their postsecondary education. One of the most prevalent emotional challenges reported is anxiety, both generalized anxiety and test anxiety. In the 1980s, a self-determination initiative was promoted by the United States Office of Special Education. Scholars in the field of special education began to do extensive research on interventions and services having students practice self-determined behavior. One of the leading scholars, Dr. Michael Wehmeyer, developed the functional self-determination theory (Wehmeyer, 2003) emphasizing acting in a self-determined manner which includes autonomy, psychological empowerment, self-regulation, and self-realization. Extensive research has found interventions that promote self-determination among students with disabilities yields results in students experiencing improved quality of life, academic success, self-advocacy, and self-regulation skills. Given the prevalence of generalized anxiety and test anxiety in students with SLD, it is important to consider how a co-occurring disorder may affect an individual's ability to be self-determined. The goals of this study were to investigate whether anxiety and disability status were predictors of self-determination and to investigate whether college students with SLD have higher or lower levels of anxiety, test anxiety, and self-determination compared to their peers without disabilities.

Findings from this study can be utilized to assist those providing accommodations and services to students with disabilities at all levels of education, particularly university faculty, staff, and professors, and will ultimately benefit future students with disabilities.
