Therefore, the first section of the present book presents effects of sediment transport on hydraulic structures, that concern alluvial channel hydraulics. The second section refers to a serious consequence of river sediment transport, namely reservoir sedimentation. Sediment transported in a river originates from the corresponding basin, that is eroded by rainfall water. Hence, the quantification of soil erosion is also addressed in the second section. While soil erosion is the original physical process that causes reservoir sedimentation, the latter process may increase coastal erosion in case that the river feeding the reservoir, discharges its water into the sea. So, the effect of reservoir sedimentation on coastal erosion is further treated in the second section. Finally, the third section of the book is dedicated to the phenomenon of local scour around bridge piers, in particular the conditions of ice cover.

Investigation of the hydraulic, hydrologic, and sediment transport consequences of the removal of these structures have been very limited, thus necessitating the establishment of analytical techniques and procedures to adequately predict these effects. To properly evaluate the development of techniques and procedures, a model must be selected that closely simulates the actual behavior of the phenomenon being modeled. A mathematical (HEC-6) was selected because of its success in the prediction of sediment transport when applied to a wide variety of cases. The removal of the Washington Water Power Dam on the Clearwater River near Lewiston, Idaho, was selected for study. Procedures and techniques of calibration and verification developed, comparison of actual and predicted volume of sediment transported, where the sediment scoured or deposited, and their rates are presented. There is discussion of the applicability of the model to this type of problem, limitations of a one-dimensional model, and interpretation of the results. (Author).

They first illustrated the problem to geomorphologists and geographers. Later, Chang, in his “Fluvial Processes in River Engineering”, provided a basis for engineers, showing this group of professionals how to deal with rivers and how to understand them. Since then, more informative studies have been published. Many of the authors started to combine fluvial geomorphology knowledge and river engineering needs, such as “Tools in Fluvial Geomorphology” by G. Mathias Kondolf and Hervé Piégay, or focused more on river engineering tasks, such as “Stream Restoration in Dynamic Fluvial Systems: Scientific Approaches” by Andrew Simon, Sean Bennett, and Janine Castro. Finally, Luna Leopold summarized river and stream morphologies in the beautiful “A view of the river”. It appears that we continue to explore this subject in the right direction. We better understand rivers and streams, and as engineers and fluvial geomorphologists, we can establish tools to help bring rivers alive. However, there is still a hunger for more scientific tools that we could use to further understand rivers and to support the development of healthy streams and rivers with high biodiversity in the present world, which has started to face water scarcity.
