Previous studies examining the veracity of this myth offer contradictory findings and varied methodologies. Several studies have found support for the myth, but others have found that health may actually improve in retirement. Also, it has been suggested that retirement may affect health of men and women in different ways. The purpose of the current study was to clarify and extend previous findings regarding the relationship between retirement and health among men and women using data from the Health and Retirement Study. The study was conducted in two phases. For the first phase, cross-sectional data were analyzed with working and retired participants matched on age, sex, race, and education. In the second phase, a longitudinal matched sample was utilized that included working participants, half of whom had retired by four year follow up. Sex, marital status, and income were examined as potential moderators. Results indicated that retired participants in both samples reported more functional health impairment and more symptoms of depression. However, the effect appeared to be evident primarily among people who had been forced to retire. There was no difference between voluntary retirees and working participants on functional health impairment, and voluntary retirees actually reported fewer symptoms of depression than working participants. Overall, this study provides support for the myth of retirement and health, but only among people forced to retire.

This study estimates the effects of retirement on health status as measured by indicators of physical and functional limitations, illness conditions, and depression. The empirics are based on seven longitudinal waves of the Health and Retirement Study, spanning 1992 through 2005. To account for biases due to unobserved selection and endogeneity, panel data methodologies are used. These are augmented by counterfactual and specification checks to gauge the robustness and plausibility of the estimates. Results indicate that complete retirement leads to a 5-16 percent increase in difficulties associated with mobility and daily activities, a 5-6 percent increase in illness conditions, and 6-9 percent decline in mental health, over an average post-retirement period of six years. Models indicate that the effects tend to operate through lifestyle changes including declines in physical activity and social interactions. The adverse health effects are mitigated if the individual is married and has social support, continues to engage in physical activity post-retirement, or continues to work part-time upon retirement. Some evidence also suggests that the adverse effects of retirement on health may be larger in the event of involuntary retirement. With an aging population choosing to retire at earlier ages, both Social Security and Medicare face considerable shortfalls. Eliminating the embedded incentives in public and private pension plans, which discourage work beyond some point, and enacting policies that prolong the retirement age may be desirable, ceteris paribus. Retiring at a later age may lessen or postpone poor health outcomes for older adults, raise well-being, and reduce the utilization of health care services, particularly acute care.

We find that the mental effects are heterogeneous by gender and marital status. Retirement of partnered men positively affects mental health of both themselves and their partners. Single men retiring experience a drop in mental health. Female retirement has hardly any effect on their own mental health or the mental health of their partners. Part of the effects seem to be driven by loneliness after retirement.

Book excerpt: Introduction: There are a number of challenges associated with marital status in older adults. Fewer studies have been conducted to investigate the association between social relationships that include partner status and health behaviors among older adults. This study is designed to define and assess the association of health behavior and outcomes of adult relationships. With an expanded definition of adult pairs, we test its potential for promoting health. We define health in two ways. Health is measured by the absence of chronic disease. Prevention is another measure of health in our study operationalized as being physically active, being a non-smoker, and partaking in yearly health exams. Methods: This research consists of a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) from the 2014 wave of the survey. For analysis purposes, we focused on those individuals who were self-respondents of the study, did not live in a nursing home or assisted living facility, and did not have missing answers for the relationship status questions and variables included in each outcome. Of the possible 18,748 survey responses, for the first analysis 4,163 participants were included in the first analysis and 16,622 in the second analysis. Results: The results of this study found the magnitude of the association between partnership and marriage with preventable health behavior remained different. Partnered women have a 56% lower odds of adopting moderate preventable health behavior compared to their married counterpart (OR=0.44; 95% CI 0.24, 0.81). Additionally partnered men and women are 23% and 39% times less likely to adopt best preventable health behavior respectively (OR 0.39; 95% CI 0.19, 0.82 and OR=0.23; 95% CI 0.10, 0.50) compared to their married counterpart. Among women, those living with a partner were 1.73 (95% CI 1.01, 2.96) times more likely to have four or more chronic conditions compared to their married counterpart. Conclusion: The role of an individual's marital status on their health is important to understand, as one's partner is able to be vital in decision-making and care coordination. Care decisions support patients through innovative approaches that take a deeper dive in to patient care.
