Book excerpt: A landmark book by marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols on the remarkable effects of water on our health and well-being. Why are we drawn to the ocean each summer? Why does being near water set our minds and bodies at ease? In Blue Mind, Wallace J. Nichols revolutionizes how we think about these questions, revealing the remarkable truth about the benefits of being in, on, under, or simply near water. Combining cutting-edge neuroscience with compelling personal stories from top athletes, leading scientists, military veterans, and gifted artists, he shows how proximity to water can improve performance, increase calm, diminish anxiety, and increase professional success. Blue Mind not only illustrates the crucial importance of our connection to water; it provides a paradigm shifting "blueprint" for a better life on this Blue Marble we call home.

Book Synopsis Preference Data for Environmental Valuation by : John Whitehead
Download or read book Preference Data for Environmental Valuation written by John Whitehead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monetary valuation of environmental goods and services has evolved from a fringe field of study in the late 1970s and early 1980s to a primary focus of environmental economists over the past decade. Despite its rapid growth, practitioners of valuation techniques often find themselves defending their practices to both users of the results of applied studies and, perhaps more troubling, to other practitioners. One of the more heated threads of this internal debate over valuation techniques revolves around the types of data to use in performing a valuation study. In the infant years of the development of valuation techniques, two schools of thought emerged: the revealed preference school and the stated preference school, the latter of which is perhaps most associated with the contingent valuation method. In the midst of this debate an exciting new approach to non-market valuation was developed in the 1990s: a combination and joint estimation of revealed preference and stated preference data. There are two primary objectives for this book. One objective is to fill a gap in the nonmarket valuation "primer" literature. A number of books have appeared over the past decade that develop the theory and methods of nonmarket valuation but each takes an individual nonmarket valuation method approach. This book considers each of these valuation methods in combination with another method. These relationships can be exploited econometrically to obtain more valid and reliable estimates of willingness-to-pay relative to the individual methods. The second objective is to showcase recent and novel applications of data combination and joint estimation via a set of original, state-of-the-art studies that are contributed by leading researchers in the field. This book will be accessible to economists and consultants working in business or government, as well as an invaluable resource for researchers and students alike.

Book Synopsis Options for Minimizing Fuel-Related Contaminants in Lakes and Reservoirs by : Contra Costa Water District

This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of the report was to provide reservoir managers with technical and economic information regarding the possible methods for controlling the levels of MTBE and BTEX in reservoir water supplies. This report comprehensively evaluates options to give practical data and advice to water managers who wish to consider the benefits of dual use (use to store drinking water supplies and use as recreational attractions) without introducing unacceptable health risks into the water bodies being managed. Book Synopsis Proposed 1981 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Lease Sale Offshore Central and Northern California, OCS Sale No. 53 by : United States. Bureau of Land Management. Pacific Outer Continental Shelf Office
Download or read book Proposed 1981 Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Lease Sale Offshore Central and Northern California, OCS Sale No. 53 written by United States. Bureau of Land Management. Pacific Outer Continental Shelf Office and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposed OCS Sale No. 53 includes a maximum offering of 242 tracts for oil and gas leasing offshore central and northern California. Tracts comprise 532,258 hectares (1,315,205 acres) on the Federal OCS, ranging seaward from 3 to as far as 27 miles, and lying in water depths from 50 to 750 meters (162 to 2,437 feet). Tracts comprise five distinct subareas, extending from waters opposite Humboldt Bay in northern California to offshore waters opposite Point Conception in central California. There are no Federal oil and gas leases in the area at present. Very minor exploratory drilling has occurred in some areas previously. Because it is frontier area, the exact extent of oil and gas resources which might be present is somewhat uncertain. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the most probable resource amounts at 548 million barrels of oil and 621 billion cubic feet of gas. Four of the subareas are regarded as oil prone, while all five are regarded as also likely containing gas. Pending final decision by the Secretary of the Interior, the proposed lease Sale is tentatively scheduled for May 1981.
